Before that, he wrote and drew stories for Western Printing Co., which produced comic books for Dell publications. In the early 1940s, Stanley scripted, plotted and sketched the comic. The finished drawings were made by other cartoonists (such as Irving Tripp ) while he was writing 'Little Lulu', a character originally created by Marjorie "Marge" Henderson Buell Until 1960, Stanley contributed scripts and artwork to many other Dell comic books, like 'Melvin Monster', 'Clyde Crashcup' and 'O.G. Whiz'. When he left the comics field, his comments on the comic books - even his own work - became rather sour. In the final stages of his career, he worked for a silk-screening company in upstate New York. He was a friend of George Frideric Handel , and following Handel's death, Stanley joined first with John Christopher Smith and later with Thomas Linley to continue the series of oratorio concerts Handel had established, and succeeded him as a governor of the Foundling Hospital (continuing his tradition of performing "Messiah" for them). In 1779, Stanley succeeded William Boyce as Master of the King's Musick Stanley's works include the opera Teraminta , the dramatic cantata The Choice of Hercules , twelve other cantatas with texts by John Hawkins , the oratorios Jephtha The Fall of Egypt and Zimri , and instrumental music, notably three volumes of Voluntaries (1748, 1752, and 1754). January 22, 2007 Permalink Organic - That’s Mainstream, What is Your Point of Difference In the last few years farm shops and farmers markets have had the opportunity to promote fresh organic produce and as a result of this strategy have seen a significant growth in sales. But, it is a new year and retailing is a fast moving industry to be in. I have just been around a Safeway store in Seattle, Washington State, USA and having walked the store I have to ask myself why I would shop in a farmers market when this was the offer in the local supermarket! The organic section takes pride of place in the fruit and vegetable area. The signage is very professional and the produce looks excellent. I therefore decided to check out a few other supermarkets and the offer was very similar. Back to the Safeway store through. I was able to pick up a free leaflet called ‘The Fresh Grocer” with tips on fresh produce from Tony Tantillo. The first page told me that the best buy in the markets this month was Navel Oranges from California, the article then went onto tell me why he thinks this, how I should store them in my home and tips on nutrition followed by a series of recipes. The leaflet then went on to discuss other produce in season and also to discuss acai, a new fruit on the market from Brazil (check out www.whatisacai.com

BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS John Stanley John Stanley was born in London on 17th January, 1712. At about the age of two, he had the misfortune to fall on a marble hearth with a china basin in his hand, an accident which left him almost blind – apparently he was still able to distinguish colors and possibly some shapes. He began studying music at the age of seven. Under the guidance of Maurice Greene, composer and organist at St. Paul's Cathedral, he studied "with great diligence, and a success that was astonishing" (Burney). At the age of nine he played the organ, probably as an occasional deputy, at All Hallows, Bread Street. The organist died on 23rd September 1723 and exactly one month later eleven-year-old Stanley was appointed organist to the church at a salary of £20 per annum. The St. James's Evening Post reporting the event stated that Stanley "is become the Surprize of the Town for his ingenious Performance on the Harpsichord and Organ; and, in the opinion of good Judges, bids fair to equal, if not exceed the Merit of his celebrated Predecessor." When he was fourteen "in preference to a great number of candidates" (Burney) he was chosen as organist at St. Andrew's, Holborn and at the age of seventeen became the youngest person ever to obtain the Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus.) at Oxford University.

In 1734 he was appointed organist to the Society of the Inner Temple - a position he held until his death. It was at the ancient Temple Church that his brilliant playing upon the organ and harpsichord attracted the attention of many fine musicians including Handel who regularly visited the church to hear him. In 1738 Stanley married Sarah Arlond (daughter of Captain Edward Arlond of the East India Company) who brought him a dowry of £7,000 per annum. Sarah's sister Ann, who at this time lived with them, became the blind composer's copyist.
