Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (b. 1852, Dublin; d. 1924, London) Charles Villiers Stanford started his musical career as a choirboy at St. Patrick's (Anglican) Cathedral in Dublin. Although his father intended for him to pursue the legal profession, his early musical talent convinced his father (an amateur cellist and singer) to allow him to engage in a musical career, provided he got a university education. He entered Queens College, Cambridge, in 1870 as a choral scholar but was soon awarded an organ scholarship at Trinity College, where he subsequently became Organist of the College and led several university choral societies—unprecedented for an undergraduate. From 1874 to 1876, he studied abroad for part of each year. He studied with Reinecke and Kiel and met Brahms, Wagner, Saint-Saëns, and Offenbach during these travels. In 1875 he won second prize in the Alexandria Palace competition for British composers for his Symphony No. 1. As a result, he garnered wider attention, including that of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who commissioned him to write the incidental music for the play Queen Mary in 1876, when Stanford was not yet twenty-four. At twenty-six, his

Sir Charles Stanford and the R.C.M. Orchestra. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford had such gifts as a composer and teacher of composition that it is little wonder they have dominated most appreciations of him which have appeared of late in different quarters. Yet they were not his sole claim to eminence. His secondary gifts (could they have been dispersed), would have supplied several people with honourable reputations, and as a Conductor he achieved more than Collegians even - with their privileged opportunities for observation - may have quite realised. British orchestras are acknowledged to be among the finest in the world. Fifty years ago their members were mainly foreign: to-day they are staffed with British born, British trained players, unsurpassed in resourcefulness, self-reliance, sight-reading and ready musicianship. Their training grounds have been the R.A.M. and R.C.M., and Sir Charles Stanford was one of their greatest trainers. For years now he cannot have gone to any first class orchestral concert in the Kingdom without seeing the faces of old Collegians confronting him from among the ranks of players. Outside College he held several important appointments. The Cambridge conductorships began (while he was still an undergraduate) with the Cambridge Amateur Vocal Guild, soon joined by that of the Cambridge University Musical Society. Then there was the conductorship of the London Bach Choir, which lasted from 1885 to 1902, and the conductorship of the Leeds Philharmonic Society and Festival from 1901 to 1910. There were also various Royal Philharmonic Society Concerts in London. It is on these outside appointments that his conducting is usually appraised, but no one really knew him who had not seen him with the R.C.M. Orchestra. Here his powers found their most congenial expression, and he put a steady glow of enthusiasm into work that many men might have regarded as mere tiresome routine.

From LoveToKnow 1911
SIR CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD (1852-), Irish musical composer, was born in Dublin on the 30th of September 1852, being the only son of Mr John Stanford, examiner in the court of chancery (Dublin) and clerk of the Crown , Co. Meath . Both parents of the composer were accomplished amateur musicians, the father being the possessor Of a splendid bass voice, and the mother a very clever pianist. Under R. M. Levey (violin), Miss Meeke, Mrs Joseph Robinson , Miss Flynn and Michael Quarry (piano), young Stanford's musical powers were trained in the early days; and Sir Robert Stewart taught him composition and organ. Various feats of precocity are recorded in an article in the Musical Times for December 1898. He carne to London as a pupil of Arthur O'Leary and Ernst Pauer in 1862, and in 1870 won a scholarship at Queen's College, Cambridge, whence he migrated to Trinity College in 1873, and succeeded J. L. Hopkins as college organist, a post he held till 1892. His appointment as conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society gave him great opportunities, and the fame which the society soon obtained was in the main due to Stanford's energies. Before his time ladies were not admitted into the chorus , but during his tenure of the office of conductor many most interesting performances and revivals took place. In the years 1874 to 1877 he was given leave of absence for a portion of each year in order to complete his studies in

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford
Born and raised in Dublin, Stanford was the only son of a prosperous Protestant lawyer. His genius for classical musical forms gained him admission to Cambridge University at the age of 18 where he quickly established a commanding reputation, and was appointed organist of Trinity College while still an undergraduate. Afterward he went to Germany to study composition with Carl Reinecke in Leipzig, and later with Friedrich Kiel in Berlin. He went on to compose in almost every music form including seven symphonies; ten operas; fifteen concertante works; chamber, piano, and organ pieces; and over thirty large-scale choral works. His voluminous sacred music continues to be the foundation of the Anglican tradition. Stanford has often been dismissed in this century as a German imitator; an unoriginal fabricator of "Brahmsian" music. However, anything more than a cursory investigation of his music reveals his Celtic roots, as well as his intense individuality. This combining of German and Celtic traditions to create an integrated idiom was instrumental in establishing an English style upon which the next generation of British composer could build. In his article on Stanford for the New Grove, Frederick Hudson writes, "Stanford's name is linked with those of

C Faust Alto Rhapsody As a conductor he early made his mark, and in addition to countless Festival and other engagements in England and on the Continent, he held the post of conductor to the Bach Choir (1885-1902) and Leeds Philharmonic Society (1897-1910). He received the honorary degree of Mus. Doc. at Oxford in 1883, and at Cambridge in 1888. The honour of knighthood was conferred on him in 1901, and in 1904 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts at Berlin. Like most British composers, his larger compositions have rarely had the attention they deserve. Yet few will deny that his symphonies and other orchestral works are infinitely better, and far more attractive, than stacks of things that are played to rags year in, year out. And are not and The Critic still worthy of the attention of our opera companies? Among choralists his position is secure. No church choir is likely to exhaust the interest and effect of his service music and anthems. His Service in B flat, with its skilful and significant use of fragments of plain-chant, was something new in English church music, and wears as too little of the repertory does. Choral societies, large and small, will long revel in
