Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz was born in Německ½ Brod on June 17, 1717. He was the third child born and the first to survive past infancy. He was baptized on June 19 and probably born a day or two before the baptism . His name appears in the registry as Jan Waczlaw Antonin Stamitz. The Stamitz family was very artistic as Johann's father, Antonn Ign¡c, was organist at the Dean's Church before becoming a merchant, landowner and town councilor. His three brothers were very artistic as well. Joseph FrantiÅ¡ek was a painter and Antonn Tade¡Å¡ and V¡clav Jan were both musicians at some point in their lives. Stamitz received his first schooling in Německ½ Brod and his first musical instruction most likely came from his father. In 1728, he enrolled in the

Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz was the dean of the Mannheim school of instrumental music. He was born in Deutschbrod on 19 June, 1717, the son of a schoolmaster.
In 1742, he performed as solo violinist at the festivities held in Frankfurt in honour of the coronation of Emperor Karl VII, and created so much enthusiasm for his performance that he attracted the notice of the Elector Palatine Karl Theodore who took him, one year later, to Mannheim as chamber musician. In 1745, Stamitz rose to the rank of concertmaster and conductor of the Mannheim orchestra. It was in this position that he made conductorial history, not only by establishing the Mannheim school of conducting but also by developing his orchestra as one of the most technically perfect of the time. But Stamitz's importance in musical history rests even more with his compositions, in which he proved to be one of the fathers of the symphony, one of the distinguished forerunners of Haydn Stamitz's symphonies enjoyed a great popularity in their day, and as early as 1751 they received performances in Paris.

STAMITZ, JOHANN BIOGRAPHY
The Bohemian composer Johann Stamitz, a versatile performer on a number of instruments, is chiefly known for his work with the Mannheim orchestra, which he built into what a later visitor, the English Dr Burney, described as an army of generals. He seems to have joined the musical establishment of the Elector Palatine, whose capital was at Mannheim, in 1741, as a violinist, and by 1750 had become director of instrumental music. The Mannheim orchestra became famous for its discipline, evident in particular in the Mannheim crescendo, an effective increase in volume and following decrease that became a feature of the music written for the orchestra, which had other characteristic features, including the ascending melodic figure known as the Mannheim rocket. Chamber Music A smaller amount of chamber music by Stamitz consists of trios and sonatas for violin and basso continuo.
