original name Ludwig Spohr German violinist, composer, and conductor whose compositions illustrate an early aspect of the Romantic period in German music. Spohr taught himself composition by studying the scores of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He studied violin with the leader of the Brunswick orchestra and in 1802 with Franz Eck, who took him on a tour of Russia. He toured Italy with the great violin virtuoso Niccol² Paganini and in 1817 became conductor of the opera in Frankfurt am Main. In 1820 Spohr made the first of his six tours of England. He became court conductor at Kassel in 1821. In his later years his political radicalism incurred the displeasure of his patron, the elector of Hesse-Kassel, who pensioned him in 1857. Shortly afterward, he broke his left arm and was no longer able to play the violin. Though opposed to the forward-looking composers of his time—he disliked the works of Carl Maria von Weber and the late works of Ludwig van Beethoven—Spohr regarded Richard Wagner's music highly and conducted The Flying Dutchman and Tannh¤user. Spohr's 11 operas include Faust (1816), one of the earliest German Romantic operas, and Jessonda. Of his nine symphonies, the fourth, Die Weihe der T¶ne (The Consecration of Sound), was the most successful. He also wrote 15 violin concerti (of which No. 8 continues to be performed), 34 string quartets, 4 double string quartets, and a nonet. A selection of his works was published from 1949 onward at Kassel, where in 1954 a society to propagate his music, the Spohr-Gesellschaft, was founded.

  • (Ludewig, Ludwig), celebrated German violinist, composer, and conductor; b. Braunschweig, April 5, 1784; d. Kassel, Oct. 22, 1859. The Spohr family moved to Seesen in 1786. His father, a physician, played the flute, and his mother was an amateur singer and pianist. Spohr began violin lessons at the age of five. In 1791, he returned to Braunschweig, where he studied with organist Carl August Hartung and violinist Charles Louis Maucourt. He also composed several violin pieces. Duke Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand admitted Spohr to the ducal orchestra and arranged for his further study with the violinist Franz Eck. In 1802 Eck took him on a tour to Russia, where he met MUZIO CLEMENTI and JOHN FIELD. He returned to Braunschweig in 1803 and resumed his post in the ducal orchestra. On his return, he met Pierre Rode, whose compositions and violin technique were major influences on Spohr. In 1804 Spohr made his first official tour as a violinist to Hamburg (his first actual tour to Hamburg in 1799 proved a failure, and a second, early in 1804, was aborted when his Guarnerius violin was stolen). He also gave concerts in Berlin, Leipzig, and Dresden. In 1805 he became concertmaster in the ducal orchestra at Gotha.

Spohr, Louis b Brunswick, 5 Apr. 1784; d Kassel, 22 Oct. 1859). German composer and violinist. Studied Seesen with Riemenschneider and Dufour, Brunswick with Kunisch and Hartung. Spohr's first stage work was an operetta, (1806), which received a concert performance during his leadership of the ducal band at Gotha. Its successor, Alruna (comp. 1808), was rehearsed at Weimar, when it won Goethe's admiration: it is a more advanced work, taking a supernatural subject and attempting continuous opera. The first production he achieved was of Der Zweikampf mit der Geliebten (The Duel with the Beloved, 1811), something of a reversion to convention while containing ...
