At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to the Marine Band, the official band of the president of the United States. At the age of 18 he began to play the violin in theater orchestras. Appointed leader of the Marine Band in 1880, he resigned 12 years later to form his own band. Sousa's Band, as it was called, achieved great popularity during many tours of the United States and Europe. Sousa, a perfectionist, raised the level of performance and instrumentation of the concert band. He composed so many marches that he is known as the March King. His marches, recognized as distinctively American as well as brilliant and stirring, include “Semper Fidelis” (1888), “Washington Post March” (1889), “King Cotton” (1895), and the most popular of all, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (1897). Sousa also composed 15 comic operas and 2 symphonic poems and invented the sousaphone, a large bass tuba with circular coiling and an upright bell. He wrote an autobiography

I Strongly Disagree With Connellsville High School's Choice For The John Philip Sousa Award
    By John Philip Sousa
The winner? A gum-snapping ne'er-do-well by the name of Brittany Collier, who in no way exemplifies the spirit of John Philip Sousa. Some 30 years ago this institution, in an act I am most grateful for and not in the least surprised by, established the John Philip Sousa Award for the student who exhibits the most talent and dedication toward the live performance of marches. Yet that selfsame school has made a mockery of the honor which bears my name by awarding it to someone undeserving at best and scandalous at worst. Brittany Collier. A brutish young imp with all the quick-stepping and gay revelry of a rotted barrel of Bartlett pears.

      John Philip Sousa
Bandleader / Composer Born: 6 November 1854 Died: 6 March 1932 Birthplace: Washington, D.C. Best known as: The guy who wrote "Stars and Stripes Forever" "March King" John Philip Sousa was the most famous band leader in the United States during his lifetime, a former U.S. Marine Band leader who composed and conducted some of the most well-known marches in the world. His professional career began as a violinist in travelling orchestras, but his first fame came as the leader of the U.S. Marine Band from 1880 until 1892. Sousa composed the official song of the Marine Corps, "Semper Fidelis" at the request of President Chester A. Arthur (who was looking for a song to replace "Hail to the Chief," or so the story goes). In 1892 he started a civilian band that became internationally famous and hugely popular (in 1910 they toured the world). The band was known especially for marches that Sousa composed, notably "Stars and Stripes Forever," designated in 1987 as the National March of the United States. Extra credit: Sousa also wrote operas and other pieces of music, as well as novels and poetry... In 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve (at the age of 62) because of World War I.
