Smetana was born March 2, 1824, in LitomyÅ¡l, Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic), and trained as a pianist in Prague. With the help of the Hungarian composer and pianist Franz Liszt, he established a fashionable music school in Prague in 1848. Dissatisfied with life under the Austrian domination of Bohemia, he accepted an appointment at G¶teborg, Sweden, as conductor of the Philharmonic Society and held the post from 1856 to 1861. In 1863 Smetana settled permanently in Prague; he opened another music school and became conductor of the choral society Hlahol. In 1866 he was appointed conductor of the newly established Czech opera house in Prague, but he resigned in 1874 because of sudden deafness. Despite this handicap he continued to compose, and he produced some of his greatest works in the last years of his life. He died May 12, 1884, in Prague.

He is best known for his symphonic poem Vltava (better known as The Moldau from the German), the second in a cycle of six which he entitled M¡ vlast ("My Country"), and for his opera The Bartered Bride Smetana was the son of a brewer in LitomyÅ¡l in Bohemia , then part of the Austrian Empire . He studied piano and violin from an early age, and played in an amateur string quartet with other members of his family. Smetana attended a high school in Pilsen from 1840-1843. He studied music in Prague , despite initial resistance from his father. He secured a post as music master to a noble family, and in 1848 received funds from Franz Liszt to establish his own music school. September 1855 marked the death of his second child, his beloved four-year-old daughter Bedřiska. When his third child died nine months later, he committed himself to composition, producing the Piano Trio in G minor. This piece is full of sadness and despair, making use of phrases that are cut short, possibly in resemblance to his daughter's own life. In 1856, Smetana moved to

Bedøich Smetana Bedøich Smetana se narodil v Litomyšli 2. bøezna 1824 v pomìrnì zámožné rodinì. Jeho otec mìl rád hudbu a syna Bedøicha zasvìtil do jejích tajù už ve ètyøech letech, pozdìji ho ale svìøil do péèe obchodníka Jana Chmelíka, který øídil hudební produkce pro hrabìte Valdštejna. Smetana se uèil hrát na housle a pozdìji na klavír. Své první veøejné vystoupení absolvoval v Litomyšli v šesti letech. Pozdìji Smetana studoval na gymnáziu v rùzných mìstech, avšak ne pøíliš úspìšnì. V Praze pak svá studia ukonèil vlastnì hrubým porušením káznì – pøestal chodit do školy. Zaujal ho kulturní a spoleèenský život v Praze a vìnoval se hudební èinnosti. Po roztržce s otcem zakonèil pak studia pod dohledem staršího bratrance, který byl profesorem na premonstrátském gymnáziu v Plzni. Po smíøení se s otcem se Smetana vrátil do Prahy a byl pevnì rozhodnut vìnovat se pouze hudbì. Finanèní situace otcova se zhoršila, Smetana nemohl poèítat s jeho podporou a tak se vynoøila pøed ním starost o živobytí. V roce 1844 se mu ale podaøilo získat místo uèitele hudby v rodinì hrabìte Leopolda Thuna. Navíc ho jeho budoucí tchynì seznámila s Josephem Prokschem, který ho vyuèoval soukromì kompozici. Proksch byl vynikající uèitel a jeho ústav byl nejuznávanìjší v Praze. A tak Smetana zaèal systematicky studovat hudbu. V roce 1847 studium u Proksche i vyuèování u Thunù ukonèil.
