Short biography of Bedrich Smetana, first national composer of Bohemia (Czech Republic), famous for his patriotic 'Ma Vlast' ('My Country') symphonic poem.
Bedrich Smetana was one of the most influential composer in Czechoslovakia. He is best known for symphonic poem cycle Ma Vlast (My Country), an ode to his homeland. He wrote the operas The Bartered Bride, Brandenburgers in Bohemia, Dalibor and Libuse. Smetana is considered a Czech national hero.
Child Prodigy
Born in Litomysl on March 2, 1824, Smetana started music lessons from his violinist father, a keen amateur musician, later, with several local teachers. At the age of five, he played first violin in a Haydn quartet, and the following year, gave a piano recital in public.
Teenage Years
In his teens, Smetana attended the Academic Gymnasium in Prague, but neglected school in order to attend concerts, including some of

Bedrich Smetana
The whole world as it was to Smetana collapsed. In it, he was a persecuted outlaw, periods of clearer awareness alternated with hallucinations, when crowds of beautiful women, to whom he kindly beckoned and directed to Prague so they could find a better time than with him, a sick old man. And the score for "Viola" (Violet) was bleeding the last life from him. Exclamations of enthusiasm over his own work ended work on this frightful score, which was brutally torn from the darkness of madness. In April 1884 came the day when Smetana was still composing and he wrote on a page of his score: "Final page." Then his creative powers left him for good. After that, it wasn't possible for Smetana to get the treatment he needed at home. On the suggestion of his physician, on April 22 he was transferred to the Prague Institute for the Mentally Ill in Katerinky. What was actually transported there was really only an empty shell, which was set free by death on a sunny May 12, at 4:30 in the afternoon. The celebrated funeral began in Old Town Square, leading from the Church of Our Lady of Tyn, on May 15. It turned into a national occaision of mourning, with large crowds lining the path of the procession to say their farewells to the dead master. At the National Theater, fanfares greeted Smetana for the last time, then the procession headed for Vysehrad, where Smetana's body was laid to rest. On that day

[05-11-2007] By Ruth Fraňkov¡ Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s The familiar sound of harp opens the cycle of six symphonic poems entitled Ma Vlast or My Country, written by one of the most famous Czech composers Bedrich Smetana. This Monday marks exactly 125 years since its remarkably successful premiere at Prague's Zofin Palace in 1882. Although conceived as individual works, the poems are usually presented as a single work in six movements. Each piece was inspired by some aspect of Czech history, legends and landscape. The cycle begins at Vysehrad, the seat of the earliest Czech kings. But the best known of Ma Vlast is definitely Vltava.

SMETANA, BEDRICH BIOGRAPHY
Smetana holds an important place in the development of musical nationalism in his native Bohemia, where he was born in 1824, the son of a master brewer in the service of Count Waldstein and others. His career was interrupted by a period of self-imposed exile in Sweden, after the political disappointments that followed the turmoil of 1848. He was instrumental in the establishment of Czech national opera and a Czech national style, in particular in his symphonic poems. He was deaf in later life, but continued to compose, an autobiographical element appearing in his string quartets. Operas The best known of Smetana's operas is The Bartered Bride, the overture of which makes a brilliant opening to any orchestral concert programme. His other operas have enjoyed less international success. Orchestral Music The best known of Smetana's orchestral works is the cycle of symphonic poems Ma vlast (My Country), a set of six works, of which Vltava (River Moldau), which follows the historic course of the river as it flows towards Prague, is the most frequently heard.

It was not until his first opera, The Brandenburgers in Bohemia , was enthusiastically received in January 1866 that his prospects there improved. His second, The Bartered Bride , was speedily put into production and soon found favour, though (as with his other operas) foreign performances long remained rarities. As principal conductor of the Provisional Theatre, 1866-74, Smetana added 42 operas to the repertory, including his own Dalibor (on a heroic national theme) and The Two Widows Dalibor and Libuse (performed at the opening of the National Theatre in Prague in 1881) are Smetana's two most nationalistic operas; when completing the latter he also planned a vast orchestral monument to his nation which became the cycle of symphonic poems entitled

Czech composer and conductor. Smetana was one of the founders of the Czech nationalist movement.

Bedrich Smetana learned violin from his father, an avid amateur violinist, and from local teachers. He was a mediocre student at the local school, preferring to spend his free time at concerts and composing string quartets for his friends. He moved to Prague, where he continued his studies and made a precarious living as a teacher. He managed an appointment as piano teacher for the family of Count Leopold Thun, which allowed him to pursue his study of harmony and composition, but his career continued on an unsuccessful path. He failed in trying to start his own music school, and likewise failed in an attempt to begin a concert career. His problems were compounded by family tragedy: between 1854 and 1856, three of his four young daughters died.
The Bartered Bride , finally established his reputation.
Smetana continued conducting and composing, beginning work on his cycle of nationalistic tone poems

Executive summary: My Country Bohemian composer and pianist, was born at Leitomischl in Bohemia on the 2nd of March 1824. He made such rapid progress in his studies under Ikavec, at Neuhaus, that at the age of six he appeared in public as pianist so successfully that his father's opposition to a musicians career was overcome. He then went to Proksch, at Prague, until he left for Leipzig to make the acquaintance of Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn . Limited means prevented him from studying with the latter, and he returned to Prague, where he at once became Konzert-meister to the Emperor Ferdinand. In 1848 he married Katharina Kolar, pianist, and with her founded a music school at Prague. At the same time he met Franz Liszt , who subsequently influenced him greatly, and with whom he afterwards stayed at Weimar. In 1856 Smetan accepted Alexander Dreyschock's suggestion to go as conductor of the Philharmonic Society at Gothenburg. There he remained five years, when, owing to his wife's ill-health, he returned to Prague after a successful concert tour. The death of his wife at Dresden on their return caused Smetana to change his mind, and he went back to Sweden. But the opening of the Interims Theater in 1866, and the offer of its conductorship, induced his return. In Sweden he had already written

    Festival History
Litomysl - a small town in the borderlands of Bohemia and Moravia is, due to its tradition and state of preservation, a true cultural monument from the past. In the eyes of the public - not only Czech - it is known first and foremost as the birthplace of one of the greatest composers of the 19th century and creator of modern Czech classical music, Bedrich Smetana. It is rightful that Litomysl has always valued Smetana's historical legacy and has named the most prominent town buildings and areas after him: on the wishes of the townspeople the main square carries his name (from 1990), in 1905 the new 'Smetanuv dum' theatre and concert hall was opened which was recognised in 1924, on the 100th anniversary of his birth, as a national monument. On this occasion the entire company of the Prague National Theatre performed here, as did the great Czech singer Ema Destinnova. Even then a plan was being formulated to organise a celebration of Smetana's music on the lines of the festivals in Bonn (L. van Beethoven), or Salzburg (W. A. Mozart). This plan did not however come to fruition until the 125th anniversary of the birth of Bedrich Smetana in 1949. The festival was named simply 'Smetana's Litomysl' and soon became well-established. It has taken place from the outset in the beautiful Litomysl Castle with its natural amphitheatre and acoustically perfect second castle yard.
