    About
Though Jean Sibelius is rightfully regarded among the most significant composers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for fusing traditional elements of the Romantic era with radical experimentalism, his orchestral works should be labeled first and foremost as Finnish, as his seven symphonies are a veritable soundtrack to Finland's national identity. Born to a Swedish-speaking family in 1865, he studied composition in Germany with Albert Becker, though a significant portion of early pieces show the clear influence of Wagner and Tchaikovsky. Early signs of nationalism can be heard in

Finland's Greatest 19th Century Nationalist Composer and Conductor
Tel Asiado Oct 29, 2007
The life, musical career and works of Finland's greatest composer Jean Sibelius, famous for orchestral piece Finlandia and Symphony No.5.
Considered the most distinguished Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was comfortably brought up in a musical environment by his mother and grandmother. He was born on December 8, 1865, in H¤meenlinna, Finland, a son of an army doctor.
Early Life
Sibelius showed a great ability in music early on, both as a violinist and composer. He had hopes of becoming a virtuoso violinist. He studied in Helsinki from 1886. Three years later, he went to Berlin to continue his composition studies, then after a year, to Vienna. He acquired a thorough knowledge of Viennese classics through playing in his family's string trio. In 1892 he married Aino Jarnefelt and had five children.

1 (IV): National feeling emerges
When Finland belonged to Sweden, such concepts as ‘Finland’ and ‘Finnish’ were quite vague and usually free of any patriotic emotional overtones. Finland was felt to be a natural part of Sweden, and few composers or any other cultural figures had any thought for Finland’s nationality. Indeed, Finnish national feeling only began to emerge in a serious sense after Finland had been annexed by Russia.
Cultural life in Finland in the 19th century was tinted by the increasingly strong sense of national awakening, crystallized in an often-repeated catchphrase: “We are not Swedish, we will not become Russian, let us therefore be Finnish.”
National sentiments were kindled in the early years of autonomy within the movement known as Turku Romanticism. This was a movement born in the Academy, or University, when it was still in Turku; it followed the University to Helsinki in 1828 and found a new life in the meetings of the ‘Saturday Society’ in the new capital.

Sibelius grew to maturity at a time of fervent Finnish nationalism, as the country broke away from its earlier Swedish and later Russian overlords. Brought up in a Swedish-speaking family, Sibelius acquired a knowledge of Finnish language and traditional literature at school and the early Finnish sagas proved a strong influence on his subsequent work as a composer. After early training in Helsinki and later in Berlin, Sibelius made his career in Finland, where he was awarded a state pension. Although he lived until 1957, he wrote little after 1926, feeling out of sympathy with current trends in music. Stage Works Orchestral Music Sibelius wrote seven symphonies, an additional eighth apparently completed but destroyed. The first two of these enjoy particular popularity. Chamber Music Chamber music by Sibelius includes a string quartet, "Voces intimae", a sonatina for violin and a number of short pieces for violin and piano.

Finnish composer. His works include nationalistic symphonic poems such as En saga (1893) and Finlandia (1900), a violin concerto (1904), and seven symphonies. In 1940 he suddenly ceased composing and spent the rest of his life as a recluse. Restoration of many works to their original state has helped to remove his conservative image and reveal unexpectedly revolutionary features. Kalevala (the Finnish national epic poem) and other Finnish literature for subjects for his works, the first being Kullervo , performed at Helsinki in 1892. Sibelius had a great success with the work, capturing a popular feeling of protest against foreign, particularly Russian, oppression. Further nationalist sentiments were aroused by the tone-poem Finlandia in 1899, which became an unofficial national anthem. An annual grant was voted to Sibelius by the Finnish government in 1897 and increased in 1926, and he was thus able to devote himself entirely to composition without having to fill any official or administrative post.

    Sibelius, Jean Julius Christian
Sibelius, Jean Julius Christian OO key , Finnish composer. Sibelius was a highly personal, romantic composer, yet at the same time he represents the culmination of nationalism in Finnish music. He studied in Berlin (1889) and with Karl Goldmark in Vienna (1890). Although Sibelius wrote chamber music, piano music, and violin music, he is best known for his orchestral works. These include tone poems on national subjects, such as En Saga (1892; rev. 1902) and

Sibelius, Jean [Johan] (Julius Christian)
Nationality: Finnish composer
He studied in Helsinki from 1886 with Wegelius, also gaining stimulus there from Busoni, though at the same time he fostered ambitions as a violinist. In 1889 he went to Berlin to continue his composition studies with Becker, then after a year to Vienna under Goldmark and Fuchs. He returned to Helsinki in 1891 and immediately made a mark with his choral symphony "Kullervo," though it took him another decade to establish a wholly consistent style and to emerge from the powerful influence of Tchaikovsky: important stages on the journey were marked by the "Karelia" suite, the set of four tone poems on the legendary hero Lemminkäinen (including "The Swan of Tuonela"), the grandiose "Finlandia" and the first two symphonies. As these titles suggest, he was encouraged by the Finnish nationalist movement (until 1917 Finland was a grand duchy in the Russian empire), by his readings of Finnish mythology (Kullervo and Lemminkäinen are both characters from the "Kalevala," which was to be the source also for subjects of later symphonic poems) and in some degree by the folk music of Karelia. But the most important stimulus would seem to have been purely musical: a drive towards continuous growth achieved by means of steady thematic transformation, and facilitated by supporting the main line very often with highly diversified ostinato textures instead of counterpoints. The singleness of purpose also has to do with the frequently modal character of Sibelius' harmony.
