SIBELIUS, JEAN BIOGRAPHY
Sibelius grew to maturity at a time of fervent Finnish nationalism, as the country broke away from its earlier Swedish and later Russian overlords. Brought up in a Swedish-speaking family, Sibelius acquired a knowledge of Finnish language and traditional literature at school and the early Finnish sagas proved a strong influence on his subsequent work as a composer. After early training in Helsinki and later in Berlin, Sibelius made his career in Finland, where he was awarded a state pension. Although he lived until 1957, he wrote little after 1926, feeling out of sympathy with current trends in music. Stage Works Orchestral Music Sibelius wrote seven symphonies, an additional eighth apparently completed but destroyed. The first two of these enjoy particular popularity. Chamber Music Chamber music by Sibelius includes a string quartet, "Voces intimae", a sonatina for violin and a number of short pieces for violin and piano.

... Home Page Jean Sibelius Life The violinist, composer and conductor, Jean Sibelius, was a passionate nationalist whose works interpreted the spirit of Finland at the time the country broke away from Sweden and Russia. He studied in Helsinki, Berlin and Vienna. In 1897, the Finnish government granted him a state pension so he could devote all his time to composing. The early Finnish myths and folk tales had a strong influence on the themes he chose for his music. His last significant compositions appeared in 1925. Jean Sibelius Works
Sibelius wrote incidental music for Maeterlinck's Pellèas et Mèlisande and for Belshazzar's Feast, a play by Procope, with a Prelude and two suites from a score for Shakespeare's "The Tempest". His well known Karelia Suite was derived from incidental music for a pageant. His popular Valse triste was originally written for Jaernefelt's play Death, and in fact accompanies a death-bed scene. Sibelius wrote seven symphonies, although an eighth was destroyed for reasons unknown.

Marian Anderson: A Life in Song
Jean Sibelius While on tour in Helsinki in 1933, Kosti Vehanen arranged for Marian Anderson to visit the home of Jean Sibelius. Vehanen had been coaching Ms. Anderson in the performance of Sibelius's songs and wanted the composer to hear her extraordinary voice for himself. Sibelius was entralled with Ms. Anderson's renditions of his works and reportedly exclaimed "my ceiling is much too low for your voice." And Marian Anderson made a point to record the event in a dated note [displayed above] that indicates not only what she sang for Sibelius but also his reaction. Sibelius attended Marian Anderson's Helsinki recital soon after and, although the two never met again, in 1939 he dedicated a song to her. "Solitude" was a revision of his "A Jewish Girl's Song," originally composed as part of the incidental music for Hjalmar Procope's play, ("Belshazzar's Feast"), first performed in 1906. The following year Sibelius published a concert suite derived from the incidental music and re-titled the song "Solitude." This unpublished version for voice and piano, with its Swedish text, became a standard part of Marian Anderson's repertory and survives in the composer's autograph copy seen below.

Jean Sibelius Biography
Part of the Sibelius monument in Helsinki, Finland. Johan (Jean) Julius Christian Sibelius (December 8, ) was a Finnish composer of classical music . Together with the work of Johan Ludvig Runeberg , Sibelius' music is synonymous with Finnish national identity. Jean Sibelius was born in 1865 into a Finland-Swedish family in Hämeenlinna in the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland . His family consciously decided to send Jean to an important Finnish language school. This should be seen as part of the larger rise of the Fennoman movement, an expression of Romantic Nationalism which was to become a crucial part of Sibelius' artistic output and politics. His most famous compositions are probably Finlandia Valse Triste , the violin concerto , the Karelia suite and The swan of Tuonela (a movement from his Lemminkäinen suite ), but he wrote much else besides, including other pieces inspired by the Kalevala , seven numbered symphonies , over a hundred songs for voice and piano incidental music for 13 separate plays, an

Sibelius, Jean [Johan Julius Christian Sibelius]
b d Kullervo , based on Finn. nat. epic Kalevala . This had great success in Helsinki, 1892, but was withdrawn and not perf. again until after composer's death, when it was found to contain, amid immaturities, many indications of the later Sibelius. In the period 1893-7 he wrote the 4 Kalevala Legends En Saga , a theme of which was taken from a student str. octet. In 1897 the Finnish state voted Sibelius an annual pension (increased in 1926) to enable him to concentrate solely on comp. His tone-poem Finlandia , which became almost a nat. emblem, dates from 1899, the year of his first visit to It. He had by then completed his 1st Sym., which blends Sibelian originality with a Slav romanticism derived from Tchaikovsky. The 2nd Sym. (1902), while still classical in outline, contains more of Sibelius's individual use of short themes gradually building into a larger whole, his fondness for ostinati, and his predilection for long, atmospheric str. passages (often inevitably likened to the Finnish wind) and for unusual and effective grouping of instr., esp. woodwind. The vn. conc. was written in 1903, its warm middle movt. reflecting the It. visit, and rev. 1905 when Strauss cond. it in Berlin. The 3rd Sym., often regarded as traditional but one of the most original of the 7, followed in 1904-7. It is ded. to Bantock, one of his earliest Eng. champions. Sibelius first visited Eng. in 1905, conducting the 2nd Sym. in Liverpool. In Nov. 1907

    Biography
The core of Sibelius' oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies (or eight, if Kullervo is seen as a symphony). Like Beethoven, Sibelius used each one to develop further his own personal compositional style. These works continue to be performed frequently in the concert hall and are often recorded.
