Biography
Shostakovich had a complex and difficult relationship with the Soviet government, suffering two official denunciations of his music, in 1936 and 1948, and the periodic banning of his work. At the same time, he received a number of accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet. Despite the official controversy, his works were popular; he is now held to be, as Grove's judges him, the most talented Soviet composer of his generation. Shostakovich prided himself on his orchestration, which is clear, economical, and well-projected. This aspect of Shostakovich's technique owes more to Gustav Mahler than Rimsky-Korsakov. His greatest works are generally considered to be his symphonies and string quartets, fifteen of each. Other works include operas, six concertos, and a substantial quantity of film music. David Fanning concludes in Grove that, "Amid the conflicting pressures of official requirements, the mass suffering of his fellow countrymen, and his personal ideals of humanitarian and public service, he succeeded in forging a musical language of colossal emotional power." Shostakovich is now regarded as "the most popular composer of serious art music of the middle years of the 20th century".

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975)
Background

Shostakovich was born in St Petersburg on 25th September, 1906, and was the son of an engineer.  He developed great skills at the piano at an early age, and entered the Petrograd Conservatory at age 13, studying under Maximilian Steinberg. His talents as a symphonist were recognized early on when he gained worldwide acclaim for his magnificent First Symphony in 1926.  This symphony was rich in orchestration and on a grand-scale.
Over the next few years, Shostakovich became a well-respected composer and pianist.  Works following his first symphony include the opera The Nose (1928), the ballet The Golden Age (1930), and a pair of symphonies illustrating recent Russian history.  The first was called October (1927) and the other was May Day (1931). Criticism from the authorities
It was with his opera Lady Macbeth of Mzensk (1932) that Shostakovich ran into trouble with the Soviet authorities.  Although experimental work in all the arts had been encouraged in Russia in the 1920's, the 1930's marked a time when heavy restrictions in the arts prevented Russian composers from exploring new ideas involving modernisation of music.  Shostakovich was one of the first to be criticised for using modern elements in his works. His Lady Macbeth of Mzensk and Pravda operas almost cost him his job as a composer, and as a result, his life was practically ruined. Shostakovich was forced to go back to old formulas and methods, and his Fifth Symphony was the first of his works to demonstrate this new direction.  He described the work as 'a Soviet artist's reply to just criticism', and the piece won the approval of the public and even the authorities.

A Journey of Dmitri Shostakovich
September 26th, 1906 - August 9th, 1975 Dmitri Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg, the arts capital of Russia at the time. At the age of nine, he was recognized as a child prodigy pianist and composer. After the success of his first symphony (written as a graduation piece at the Petrograd Conservatory), Shostakovich became world-renowned. But the landmark event of his early career occurred after the premiere and phenomenal success of his second opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District. As part of an ongoing effort to portray a more liberal attitude towards the arts, Nikita Khrushchev appointed Shostakovich as chairman of the Russian Union of Composers in 1960. In order to accept the position, Shostakovich had to join the Communist Party despite a previous vow never to join. The self-loathing engendered by this decision drove Shostakovich to the point of suicide, and his String Quartet No. 8 was to be his epitaph. Like all great composers, Shostakovich was a mirror of his time, and ultimately a Shaman who spoke with grace and fluency through the mystical language of sound directly to the hearts and minds of the Russian people, and through time to us, perhaps offering us a warning about the abdication of freedom and the grave consequences of totalitarian power. furious artisans , a modern music label.

People think he was the greatest writer of symphonies in the mid- 20th century . He was also a great writer of string quartets . He lived at a time when Russia was part of the Soviet Union, ruled by dictators like Joseph Stalin . People who criticised the way the country was being ruled were punished. The politicians wanted music and art to be easy to understand and to show how great their country was. If it was too difficult to understand it was called “formalist” and that composer was not allowed to have his music performed. When Shostakovich wanted to put his real feelings into his music he had to be careful how he did it so that he did not offend the politicians.

Introduction (born St. Petersburg, 25 September 1906; died Moscow, 9 August 1975). He studied with his mother, a professional pianist, and then with Shteynberg at the Petrograd Conservatory (1919-25): his graduation piece was his Symphony no.1, which brought him early international attention. His creative development, however, was determined more by events at home. Like many Soviet composers of his generation, he tried to reconcile the musical revolutions of his time with the urge to give a voice to revolutionary socialism, most conspicuously in his next two symphonies, no.2 ('To October') and no.3 ('The First of May'), both with choral finales. At the same time he used what he knew of contemporary Western music (perhaps Prokofiev and Krenek mostly) to give a sharp grotesqueness and mechanical movement to his operatic satire The Nose , while expressing a similar keen irony in major works for the ballet ( The Age of Gold The Bolt ) and the cinema ( New Babylon ). But the culminating achievement of these quick-witted, nervy years was his second opera

Many artists have claimed to be products of the Bolshevik Revolution, but Shostakovich stands alone in level of celebrity and artistic achievement. The best-known composer of the Soviet era was born on September 25 th , 1906, in St. Petersburg to a cultured family that sided with left-wing political groups. His paternal grandfather, Boleslav Shostakovich, was active as a revolutionary in the 1860s, while his father, Dmitri Boleslavovich, was a government engineer who supported trade unions. His mother, Sofia Vassilyevna, was a piano teacher who gave Dmitri Dmitrievich his first lessons at age eight before he entered the Petrograd Conservatory at thirteen. He then received training in piano from Leonid Nikolayev, training in composition from Maximilian Steinberg, and encouragement from conservatory headsman Alexander Glazunov , himself a notable composer. Shostakovich was considered promising by the conservatory staff; he was active as a student composer and wrote his First Symphony as a graduation piece in 1925. It was so impressive a work that it premiered in Leningrad, Berlin, and Philadelphia, vaulting Shostakovich to the forefront of Soviet art.

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) Dmitri Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) and died in Moscow. His entire musical career was therefore spent within Russia's Communist system, and in many ways it is clear that he had to strike a balance between his own artistic inclinations and the demands of the state. He was taught by Glazunov among others, learning piano and composition and graduating from the St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Conservatory at the age of 19 with his first symphony. This is a youthful, precocious work demonstrating his musical talents in no uncertain terms, with some similarities in approach to Prokofiev 's Classical Symphony. Though this was an early success, his music didn't always enjoy the approval of the Soviet authorities. His opera "The Nose" received some criticism and "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" received oven more. In later years he was to enjoy more artistic freedom, but under Stalin composers and other artists ran the risk of their work being labelled anti-state "formalism". In some cases this could lead to "disappearances" so the threat was very real indeed. Shostakovich withdrew his 4th symphony before its premier for this reason and it wasn't performed until later under more liberal times. Some of Shostakovich's work seems to be simply paying his dues as an upright citizen but in many cases, although his music might outwardly be conforming with the party line, there is nevertheless the feeling that he is rebelling against this.
