Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin Russian Aleksandr Nikolayevich Skryabin ; sometimes transliterated as Skriabin Skryabin , or Scriabine 6 January O.S. 25 December 1871] 27 April ) was a Russian composer and pianist who developed a highly lyrical and idiosyncratic tonal language. Driven by a poetic, philosophical and aesthetic vision that bordered on the mystical, he can be considered the primary figure of Russian Symbolism in music. His music has been performed by musicians such as Sergei Rachmaninoff Vladimir Horowitz Arthur Rubinstein Sviatoslav Richter ... Claudio Arrau and Vladimir Ashkenazy . He also influenced composers like Olivier Messiaen Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky , although Scriabin was reported to have disliked Prokofiev's and Stravinsky's music. Scriabin stands as one of the most innovative and most controversial of composers. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia said of Scriabin that, "No composer has had more scorn heaped or greater love bestowed..." Leo Tolstoy once described Scriabin's music as "a sincere expression of genius."

    • Scriabin always said that everything within his later compositions was strictly according to 'law.' He said that he could prove this fact. However, everything seemed to conspire against his giving a demonstration. One day he invited Taneyev and I to his apartment so he could explain his theories of composition. We arrived and he dilly-dallied for a long time. Finally, he said he had a headache and would explain it all another day. That 'another day' never came.

    Alexander Scriabin
Alexander Scriabin is a composer well-known in Russia but not in the rest of the world. His music is not often performed because much of it is simply too bizarre. Towards the end of his life Scriabin was working on a composition called Mysterium which would have combined music with poetry, colors, smells and lights. He spent most of his time planning out the details, such as were the piece should be played (in a hemispherical tent somewhere in India) and did not record any of the music for it. Scriabin was born on January 6, 1872 in Moscow, and he died in Moscow on April 27, 1915. In his youth he greatly admired Chopin and often slept with a volume of his music under the pillow. Many years later he would tell Arthur Rubinstein that in his youth he was a Chopinist, then he became a Wagnerist, but "now [he] can only be a Scriabinist." Scriabin and Rachmaninoff studied together for many years. At the conservatory they were the stars and won awards for their piano playing. After the conservatory Scriabin toured Europe as a pianist. He made a sensation with his "sensuous, colorful kind of pianism." In 1898, aged just 26, Scriabin became a professor at the Moscow conservatory. The music he wrote until then sounded like

    SCRIABIN, ALEXANDER BIOGRAPHY
A friend and fellow-student of Rachmaninov in Moscow, the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin enjoyed a very different and much shorter career, at first as a concert pianist, with the encouragement of Belyayev, who published his earlier compositions. His interest in philosophy and the theosophical theories of Madame Blavatsky influenced the later form of his composition, particularly the larger scale orchestral works, while his later piano music explores new musical territory. His life was vitiated by a growing self-absorption, coupled with eccentricity of beliefs. Orchestral Music Scriabin enjoyed early success with his 1896 Piano Concerto. Of greater significance, however, are the later works, Symphony No. 3 "Le divin poème", Le poème de l'éxtase and Prométhée, Le poème du feu. Piano Music Scriabin's earliest piano music was written while he was a student at the Moscow Conservatory, leading to a final series of five sonatas starting in 1911. The remaining seven sonatas cover the years from 1886 until 1907. Other shorter piano pieces include studies, preludes and impromptus, in a style that develops from the influence of Chopin to a sensuous idiom entirely his own.

    The Master
Alexander Scriabin was a Russian composer whose music bridged the Romantic era and the twentieth century. Although he lived only into his forties, he managed to write ten sonatas for piano, a piano concerto, three symphonies, two orchestral poems, and large number of short piano solo pieces.
As he matured musically, he became more and more philosophical. Mysticism became evident his music beginning mainly with the 1907 Poem of Ecstasy and 5th sonata.
He was related to Rachmaninov. He also studied under the same teacher for quite some time. In his earliest years as a composer, he adored the work of Chopin. His early and middle-period work is rich with colorful romanticism. His mature music neared atonality.
Five sets of his complete sonatas are reviewed here, along with several other recordings. The below links offer some thoughts on the sonatas, as well as some thoughts on the performances of individual pianists.

Alexander Scriabin was born in Moscow. As early 1892, and before completing his piano and composition studies at the Moscow conservatory, he had embarked upon a career as piano virtuoso, which he would pursue practically until his death in 1915. To confine Scriabin's Works and musical personality to existing models proves virtually impossible for several reasons. In a short space of time - 30 years at the most - he had written around a hundred works, of which 74 gave a pre - eminent role to the piano solo. Evolution of style through this prolific output was absolutely staggering. The early works still show the influence of Chopin and Liszt , but upon contact with Wagner his musical language enriched itself to such an extent that there resulted a dissolution of tonality. Although he remained loyal to the piano from 1890 Scriabin turned towards the orchestra.
