Joseph Schwantner From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Joseph Schwantner (born March 22 in Chicago, Illinois ) is an American composer and educator. His first musical instrument was the guitar, which he began studying with Robert Stein at the age of eight. Schwantner credits Stein as the most important influence of his young musical life. Of his initial experiences on the guitar, Schwantner writes: His first serious attempt at composition, the jazz-influenced Offbeat , won the National Band Camp Award Offbeat was a byproduct of Schwantner’s interest in experimental (sometimes known as “free”) jazz. It was a twelve-tone work for jazz ensemble, written in 5/4. His first orchestral piece, Sinfonia Brevis , was written while a student at the American Conservatory in Chicago After graduating from the American Conservatory , Schwantner enrolled at Northwestern University to pursue graduate study with Alan Stout and Anthony Donato . While a student at Northwestern Schwantner earned three BMI Student Composition Awards. The first award came in 1965 for a

JOSEPH SCHWANTNER Joseph Schwantner is recognized as one of the foremost composers of the late 20th and early 21st century. His works for wind ensemble, orchestra, chamber ensembles and solo performance have received world-wide acclaim and stand today as monuments to his unique and innovative approach to composition. Joseph was born in Chicago and received his musical and academic training at the Chicago Conservatory and Northwestern University, completing a doctorate in 1968. Previously, he served on the Yale, Eastman and Juilliard faculties and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Schwantner was the first composer-in-residence with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as part of the MEET THE COMPOSER/Orchestra Residencies Program funded by the Exxon Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Sound Clips Born in Chicago in 1943, Joseph Schwantner received his musical and academic training at the Chicago Conservatory and Northwestern University. While developing a profile as a leading American composer, he also served on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music and the Yale School of Music, simultaneously establishing himself as a sought after composition instructor. Aftertones of Infinity won the Pulitzer Prize. In 1985 his life and music were the focus of a television documentary entitled Soundings, produced by WGBH in Boston for national broadcast. That same year his work, A Sudden Rainbow Percussion Concerto , among the most often performed of contemporary concert works, was commissioned for the 150th anniversary season of the New York Philharmonic.
