In 1627 he set to music a German translation of Dafne, Symphoniae sacrae (1629, 1647, 1650) show the influence of Monteverdi. Later, in his oratorios and his settings of the Passion as narrated in each of the four Gospels, he combined the Venetian style of alternating choirs and the dramatic declamation of Florentine monody with the German polyphonic tradition. The resultant choral style influenced German music through the time of Handel and Bach. See biographical study by H. J. Moser (1936, tr. 1959). Top Search the Library Books

Epoch: Early Baroque

Detailed Information about Introduction Psalmen Davids Dafne Monteverdi Psalmen Davids (1619) are notable for their contrasting textures and sonorities, while the Cantiones sacrae (1625) present a wide range of motet settings, from the polyphonic to the concertato. Later, he exploited the Italian concertato idiom to the full, notably in the three books of Symphoniae sacrae (1629, 1647, 1650), which give equal weight to voices and instruments. His two sets of Kleine geistliche Concerte musica poetica in perhaps its most perfect form. Extracted with permission from

died Nov. 6, 1672, Dresden composer, widely regarded as the greatest German composer before Johann Sebastian Bach. Giovanni Gabrieli Claudio Monteverdi Dafne Symphoniae sacrae I (published 1629), he used the vernacular. The first German requiem was his Musikalische Exequien Kleine geistliche Konzerte (published 1636, 1639) for solo voice and continuo, Geistliche Chormusik (published 1648), and Symphoniae sacrae II and III The Christmas Oratorio (from a publication of 1664) for soloists, choir, and instruments foreshadows his austere last works. These are a cappella Passions, settings of the text of the Gospels according to Matthew, Luke, and John. In these works even the sparing vocal figuration of the Christmas Oratorio is absent. The plain scriptural text is delivered by the soloist in a kind of recitative, generally syllabic, while the words of the Jews, high priests, etc., are set as brief polyphonic choruses. He returned full time to Dresden in 1641, and remained there for the rest of his life. He died from a stroke in 1672 at the age of 87. Style th century is also prominent in his work. Pupil of Giovanni Gabrielli from 1609-1672, Heinrich Schütz was employed by the Elector of Saxony in 1615 and became Kapellmeister two years later. While employed by the Elector, Schütz made several visits to Italy and served three two-year terms as guest court conductor in Copenhagen. Schütz's works include one opera (a first in the German language), Easter and Christmas oratorios , three passions , numerous polychoral Psalm settings in the style of his teacher, Gabrielli, other sacred concerted works in Latin and German, and Italian madrigals var site="sm4WellTemperedClavier" Bach's World Contemporaries Chronology

einrich Schütz (1585 - 1672) was the Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony in Dresden from 1615 until his death. His works are notable for successfully combining Italian and German styles. He was a student of Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice and spent several years as the guest court conductor to the King of Denmark in Copenhagen. The practice of setting the events of Holy Week to music can be traced back as far as the 4th century and range from the simplest forms of plainsong to the quasi-operatic offerings of the late Baroque period and beyond. During the Middle Ages a single cantor would perform the entire story using different vocal ranges to distinguish between Christ, using the lowest four pitches, the middle register for the Evangelist and the top four pitches for all other characters. The 'popularity' of this liturgical dramatic subject meant that numerous passion plays were conceived. Even in the famous Carmina Burana two settings are to be found. From the 15th century three persons were typically employed distributively with the more wealthy establishments able to deploy the crowd parts ( turba ) to a choir. Some notable settings of the late Middle Ages include the polyphonic work of Gilles Binchois. From the time of the Reformation both Latin and German settings became commonplace and, depending on the conception of the composer and the place of composition, these works could be motet styles for choir alone or a continuation of the earlier plainsong style. Some notable composers from the time include Johann Walther (Schütz' own choirmaster), Antoine Longaval (Schütz' passion follows this type), Jacobus Gallus and Leonhard Lechner. Even more elaborate settings were devised during the 16th century, eg the Italian composer Antonio Scandello's setting of the Passion according to St John for a diverse choral ensemble.

In 1590 he moved with his family to Weissenfels. In 1598 Landgrave Moritz, impressed by his musical accomplishments, took him to Kassel, where he served as a choirboy and studied music with the court Kapellmeister, Georg Otto. In 1609 Schütz proceeded to the University of Marburg to study law, but Landgrave Moritz advised him to abandon his university studies and to go to Venice as a pupil of G. Gabrieli ; moreover, the landgrave provided the financial means to do this. Schütz remained in Venice for over three years, returning to Moritz's court at Kassel in 1613. The following year he was seconded to serve for two months at the electoral court in Dresden, and in 1615 the Elector Johann Georg I requested his services for a further two years. Moritz reluctantly agreed, and was obliged, for political reasons, to comply when the elector insisted on retaining Schütz in his permanent employ. As Kapellmeister at Dresden, Schütz was responsible for providing music for major court ceremonies, whether religious or political. He also had to keep the Kapelle adequately staffed and supervise the musical education of the choirboys.

artin Luther, the best-known Protestant reformer, wanted the German language to be the language of German religious life. That is one reason he translated the Bible into it. On this day, October 8, 1585 , thirty-nine years after Luther's death, Heinrich Schutz was born. Luther would have been proud of what Heinrich accomplished. The greatest Protestant German composer before Bach, most of what Schutz wrote was religious and much of it was in German.
