The son of a bookseller, publisher and writer, Robert Schumann showed early abilities in both music and literature, the second facility used in his later writing on musical subjects. After brief study at university, he was allowed by his widowed mother and guardian to undertake serious study of the piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose favourite daughter Clara Wieck was later to become Schumann's wife. MIDI FILE - Träumerei, for piano His ambitions as a pianist were thwarted by a weakness in the fingers of one hand, but the 1830s nevertheless brought a number of compositions for the instrument. The year of his marriage, 1840, was a year of song, followed by attempts in which his young wife encouraged him at more ambitious forms of orchestral composition. Settling first in Leipzig and then in Dresden, the Schumanns moved in 1850 to Duesseldorf, where Schumann had his first official appointment, as municipal director of music. In 1854 he had a serious mental break-down, followed by two years in the asylum at Endenich before his death in 1856.

SCHUMANN, ROBERT BIOGRAPHY
Orchestral Music Schumann completed four symphonies, after earlier unsuccessful attempts at the form. The first, written soon after his marriage and completed early in 1841, is known as "Spring" and has a suggested programme. A second symphony followed in 1846 and the third, the "Rhenish", a celebration of the Rhineland and its great cathedral at Cologne, was written in Dsseldorf in 1850. The fourth of the symphonies was an earlier work, revised for Dsseldorf in 1852. The Overture, Scherzo and Finale, Op. 52, was described by the composer as a "symphonette Schumann's only completed piano concerto was started in 1841 and completed in 1845. The Cello Concerto of 1850 was first performed four years after Schumann's death, while the 1853 Violin Concerto had to wait over eighty years before its first performance in 1937. The Konzertstck for four French horns is an interesting addition to orchestral repertoire. Schumann's Introduction and Allegro for piano and orchestra was completed in 1853. The overture to Schumann's only completed opera, Genoveva, unsuccessful in the theatre, is part of concert-hall repertoire, with an overture to Byron's Manfred, again first intended for the theatre. Concert overtures include Die Braut von Messina (The Bride from Messina), based on Schiller's play of that name, Julius Csar, based on Shakespeare, and Hermann und Dorothea, based on Goethe. A setting of scenes from Goethe's Faust also includes an overture.

In his own words...

"The singing voice is hardly sufficient in itself; it cannot carry the whole task of interpretation unaided. In addition to its overall expression, the finer shadings of the poem must be represented as well provided that the melody does not suffer in the process." German composer, critic and music journalist. Schumann was one of the driving forces of the young Romantic movement in Germany.
Like many in his generation, Robert Schumann did not seem destined to become a composer, let alone one who would be so influential in the development of a new style. He was the son of a bookseller, and had a love of music and literature. However, at his mother's insistence, he went to Leipzig to study law. While there, he also studied piano with an ambitious teacher by the name of Friedrich Weick, whose daughter he would one day marry. He soon convinced his family of the futility of further law study and turned his full attention to music. Physical problems with his hands prevented him from continuing as a pianist, and he turned to composition and criticism.
In 1834, Schumann began the journal

Robert Schumann (1810-1856) - classical composer:
Schumann's parents were not musical but they encouraged his interest in music with Piano lessons from the age of 10. However his family was later to be beset by tragedy. When Schumann was in his teens, his father died and his sister committed suicide in quick succession, events that were to have a deep impact on the young musician. Initially music was to take a back seat in his life. For his main subject he studied law at Leipzig while simultaneously continuing his music studies. One of his music teachers was Friedrich Wieck whose daughter Clara showed a great talent at the piano while she was only 9 years old. A further tragedy was to hit Schumann when a mishap damaged one of his hands and spoiled his chances as a pianist. Some accounts blame a device he used to strengthen his fingers, but other theories suggest mercury poisoning as a side effect of his syphilis treatment. After the accident, Schumann was to concentrate more on composing. Schumann maintained his association with the Wiecks and when Clara was of the right age, he sought to marry her but her father forbade it. Following a legal action, Schumann was able to marry her shortly before her 21st birthday. Although Clara was extremely talented in her own right as both pianist and composer, her career became secondary to that of her husband's and there are suggestions that Robert's jealousy was a factor in constraining her career. Nevertheless as well as bringing up three children Clara played a significant role in classical music, through her expert advice and encouragement to other composers including

"The laws of morality are also those of art" - Robert Schumann The following is the story of a group of composers who led a spirited, if unsuccessful, battle to defend the tradition of classical music composition, during the 19th Century. The intellectual leadership was provided by the composer Robert Schumann, who also wrote for and edited a journal of music criticism, the New Journal for Music ). In declaring the purpose of his journal, Schumann wrote: "The age of mutual compliments is gradually sinking into its grave. Frankly, we are not minded to assist its resurrection. He who does not attack the bad, defends the good but halfway. Our purpose... is to remind our readers emphatically of the distant past and its works. Then, to emphasize the fact that the contemporary artist can secure strength for the creation of new beauty only by drinking from such pure fountains. Then, to attack as inartistic the immediate past, which is concerned merely with encouraging superficial virtuosity. Lastly, to help prepare and hasten the coming of a new poetic era." Carnaval Schumann used his journal as a weapon against the banal and empty theatrical and virtuoso-compositions which were then popular. It chafed him no end that so soon after the deaths of Beethoven and Schubert, the public taste had been won by such as of Rossini, whom Schumann once likened to pasta. In a review of a performance of Beethoven's four overtures to
