He is one of the most famous Romantic composers of the 19th century. He had hoped to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist, having been assured by his teacher Friedrich Wieck that he could be the finest pianist in Europe with only a few years of study with him. However, a hand injury prevented those hopes from being realized, and he decided to focus his musical energies on composition. His earliest compositions were piano miniatures and lieder ; he later composed works for piano and orchestra, many additional Lieder (songs for voice and piano), four symphonies , an opera , and other orchestral choral and chamber works. His writings about music appeared mostly in

Piano Concerto in A minor' Opus 54, Third Movement ' of this joyous Romantic concerto is playing for me now as I write. It started off in what I can only describe as a blaze of color with a solo piano taking center stage. A running theme, still on the piano, but with a softer orchestral accompaniment, soon leads to the famous march like tune, first given quietly on the strings, and then again taken up by the piano. The sense of celebration throughout the music is infectious. And if you like piano music, then you will like this piece. Schumann wrote it for his talented wife Clara, who became an influential teacher as well as a notable composer, and went on to become the most important woman pianist of the 19 th century. Born on 8 th Robert's mother, who gave him his first music lessons, lived in an exaggerated state of romance, and was subject to sudden violent passions and sentimentalism. When Robert was only sixteen years old, his sister committed suicide, and not long after his father died suddenly. With so unstable a family background it is small wonder that all his life he was haunted by fears of madness.

Carnaval and Kinderscenen from "Scenes from Childhood" are most popular. At age 13 the young Robert already wrote his first articles printed by his father. In 1821 he went to Leipzig to study law but instead spent his time in musical, social and literary activities. He wrote some piano music and took lessons from Friedrich Wieck. By 1835 he was in love with piano virtuoso Clara Wieck, the young daughter of his music-instructor Wieck who developed into a musician of consummate artistry. Wieck did his best to separate them. After many trials, Schumann and Clara were able to marry in 1840. The couple had eight children and Clara continued her career as concert pianist, at times, more popular than her husband of which he was painfully aware.

Robert Schumann: 1810-1856
Robert Schumann was an influential composer of the 19th Century. He began as a pianist, but after an unfortunate accident crippled his hand, he turned fully to composing. Schumann married Clara Schumann (born Wieck), who was a virtuosic pianist of the time period. Schumann is noted largely for his songs and keyboard works, but he also composed a large number of works for other mediums. After trying to commit suicide by throwing himself into a river, he was placed in an insane asylum in Endenich (suburb of Bonn), where he passed away. This page aims to give a comprehensive look at Schumann's life and works.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Born in Zwickau, Germany in 1810, Robert Schumann started his musical education on the piano. The son of a bookseller, he began to experiment with composition at an early age, and also cultivated a passion for poetry and literature. Although richly talented, he was never considered a prodigy, especially by the standards of the time. At sixteen, after the tragic deaths of his sister and father, he entered the University of Leipzig to study the law; but this didn't last long, and soon he had left the school to pursue music with all his energies. At the age of twenty, Schumann was studying the piano with Friedrich Wieck in Leipzig; he also boarded with the Wieck family. Although a hand injury prevented him from pursuing a career as a keyboard virtuoso, he found a niche writing music criticism - and composing, an activity, which was starting to focus his considerable talents. In the early 1830s, he published several piano pieces to critical acclaim. In 1834, he founded the New Journal for Music and served as its editor for the next nine years; the publication attacked what Schumann felt were the shallow and inconsequential musical practices of the day. On the positive side, he recognized the brilliance of Chopin and Brahms.

Introduction (born Zwickau, 8 June 1810; died Endenich, 29 July 1856). The son of a bookseller, he early showed ability as a pianist and an interest in composing as well as literary leanings. He was also enthusiastic over the writings of 'Jean Paul' (J.P.F. Richter), girl friends and drinking champagne, tastes he retained. In 1821 he went to Leipzig to study law but instead spent his time in musical, social and literary activities. He wrote some piano music and took lessons from Friedrich Wieck. After a spell in Heidelberg, ostensibly studying law but actually music, he persuaded his family that he should give up law in favour of a pianist's career, and in 1830 he went to live with Wieck at Leipzig. But he soon had trouble with his hands (allegedly due to a machine to strengthen his fingers, but more likely through remedies for a syphilitic sore). Composition, however, continued; several piano works date from this period. In 1834 Schumann founded a music journal, the

As a German composer, critic, and music journalist, Robert Schumann was one of the driving forces of the young Romantic movement in Germany. And like many in his generation, Schumann did not seem destined to become a composer, let alone one who would be so influential in the development of a new style. But music became all-important to Schumann, and he displayed multiple talents as a performer, composer, and literary exponent of Romanticism, championing new composers and their works and influencing the musical tastes of a generation.
Following the death of his father in 1826, Schumann decided to choose music rather than poetry as his life's work. However, his mother wanted him to learn a more lucrative trade than music could provide her son. Despite that from his childhood, Schumann had demonstrated an exceptional ability as a pianist, he persisted in strong literary interests as well. He was very enthusiastic over the writings of Jean Paul (J.P.F. Richter). But in 1821, at his mother's insistence, he went to Leipzig to study law, but instead, Schumann spent his time in musical, social, and literary activities. He composed some piano music and took piano lessons from Friedrich Wieck. After a stay in Heidelberg, ostensibly studying law but actually music, Schumann persuaded his mother, that he should give up law in favor of a pianist's career. In 1829, he wrote to his mother:
I have arrived at the conviction that with work, patience, and a good teacher, I would be able, within six years, to surpass any pianist. Besides... I have an imagination and perhaps a skill for the individual work of creation.
