"Clara Schumann" MUSIC: Robert Schumann: clip from the very beginning of his Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54, performed by Thomas Lorango, pianist, with the New Brandenburg Collegium conducted by Anthony Newman [Newport Classic NCD 60034, track 1]
[fades out under the following] Recognize this piece? It is the opening of the Piano Concerto in A Minor by Schumann. What about this piece? MUSIC: clip from the opening of Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 7, performed by Francesco Nicolosi, piano, with the Alma Mahler Sinfonietta conducted by Stefania Rinaldi [Naxos 8.557552, tracks 1, 2 and 3] [fades but continues under the following] I'll bet you don't recognize it. And yet it is also the opening of the Piano Concerto in A Minor by Schumann. How could that be? Well, it's very simply explained by throwing in the first names of these two different, but highly related, romantic composers. The first was by Robert Schumann. The second was by Clara Schumann. But I'll admit it is somewhat misleading to call them both Schumann, even though that certainly was Clara's married name. But she started writing this piece at the ripe old age of 14, when her name was Clara Wieck. She performed it two years later with the Leipzig Gewandhaus orchestra conducted by a chap you may have also heard of, even all these years later, by the name of Felix Mendelssohn.

Fantasiestücke, Op. 73 Fünf Stücke im Volkston, Op. 102 Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 Drei Romanzen, Op. 94 Clara Schumann Drei Romanzen, Op. 22 William Purvis, French horn Mihae Lee, piano BRIDGE 9164 This remarkable disc sets a new standard for virtuoso horn playing. William Purvis's transcriptions of Robert and Clara Schumann's works prove to be both astonishing instrumental achievements as well as musically insightful readings of these minor masterpieces. Robert Schumann's writing for the horn always sounds completely natural, from the horn calls of the "Rhenish" Symphony to the virtuosic flexibility of his "Adagio and Allegro", heard here in a superb reading. With this in mind, as well as Schumann's forward-looking view of horn technique, Purvis has fearlessly taken on the challenge of playing this repertoire with very few adjustments to the original texts. William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career both in the U.S. and abroad as French horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor and educator. A faculty member of the Juilliard School, Yale University, and SUNY Stony Brook, Purvis is much admired for his passionate advocacy of new music. In recent years he has performed premieres of concerti by Lieberson, Ligeti, and Northcott, as well as new chamber works by Ruders, Lansky, Carter, Stucky and Reynolds. Later this year his recording of Peter Lieberson's "Horn Concerto" will be released on Bridge Records. Mr. Purvis's recording of the Brahms and Ligeti "Horn Trios" can be heard on BRIDGE 9012.

Introduction: When I spent a year in Edinburgh as an exchange student, I was introduced to the novels of Janice Galloway in a seminar on contemporary Scottish women writers. I was immediately impressed by her unique, original approach to writing fiction and, being a student of literature as well as a musician, I knew I had found the perfect topic for my thesis when I learned about the subject of her next novel, which was to be published in the following summer, a literary biography of Clara Wieck Schumann. One of the most recent literary accounts of Clara Schumann's life is Clara, the latest novel by Janice Galloway. Before turning to Clara Schumann as a subject for her next project, Galloway produced a number of works, including two novels (The Trick is to Keep Breathing and Foreign Parts) and two collections of short stories (Blood and Where You Find It). She also won an impressive number of prizes and awards for her writings. For her original literary biography of Clara Wieck Schumann she received the 'Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award' in 2002.

Women of Music History, Part I - Clara Wieck Schumann
Brad Foust Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Jul 27, 1999
(How many female composers can you name? One...maybe two? If so, then you're probably not alone. Much of music history focuses on male composers and performers, but women have also played a very important role in the development of music. This continuing series will highlight some of those great female composers and performers.) Clara Wieck Schumann (1819-1896) was an important composer, performer, arranger and editor of music, most notably the music of her husband, Robert, but her path was well established far before she met him. Born to a middle-class family in Leipzig, Germany, Clara was taught music from an early age by her father, a music teacher. As with past great virtuosos, he promoted her as a concert performer. She gave concerts in Leipzig and began to tour in her early teens. She was widely known throughout Europe as a master performer. Robert Schumann was actually a student of Clara's father, and at one time, lived in the Wieck family home. The two developed a relationship, much to the dismay of Friedrich Wieck. Clara was denied the right to marry Robert because she had such a promising career, and he was unstable at best. Nevertheless, Robert took legal action to override Friedrich's denial, and Clara married him in 1840, on the day before her 21st birthday.

Portraits of Anomaly: Nannerl Mozart, Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann
Module by: C.M. Sunday Summary: Women's Studies essay on the lives of three eminent women in music "The Education of women should always be relative to men. To please, to be useful to us, to make us love and esteem them, to educate us when young and to take care of us when grown up, to advise, to console us, to render our lives easy and agreeablethese are the duties of women at all time and what they should be taught in their infancy." Rousseau "Among a hundred praise-worthy female composers hardly one can be found who fulfills simultaneously all the duties of a reasonable and good wife, an attentive and efficient housekeeper, and a concerned mother." Johann Campe In examining our own culture, and in cross-cultural comparisons of gender identity, we have seen now, up until around ten years ago, male bias has "informed" the literature of most disciplines; other than certain super-anomalous exceptions, women have been isolated in their nuclear families, and relegated to the "hot stove" and domestic sphere because of their reproductive functions. Men have been the masters of culture and a male world-view has prevailed. Women are seen as outside, and a threat to, the system that men represent. Power is in male hands and women have been trained to accept it. In this paper I will attempt to show how the three artists navigated the uneasy waters of social prejudice through the trajectory of their lives.

The Extraordinary Life of Clara Schumann
[click here , then click on track 7]
About 40 years before Clara Schumann was born, Lianne Ellison Norman Stitches in Air
Over the next few years, the relationship between Robert and Clara went from being fellow-students and big-brother/little sister to... composer and interpreter: she became the primary performer of his music. And from there, it developed into one of the most famous love-stories in classical music. From the time she turned 18 until their wedding the day before her 21st birthday, however, it was one constant battle with her father who tried to break up the romance and even took them to court to stop their wedding plans.
The inevitable finally happened, and Clara Wieck became Mrs. Robert Schumann.
Clara continued to give concerts before and shortly after the birth of their second child, a daughter named Elise, born two years later. Elise would be the most independent of the children, becoming an adequate pianist: she said performing made her too nervous to want to pursue a career. Clara was not kind to Elise, often comparing her unfavorably to Marie. Small wonder Elise left the family early to pursue a life as a governess and a piano teacher before marrying at the age of 34 and settling for a time in America. She and her husband would later have a cordial relationship with Clara, helping her in her final years, but it was not a happy one.
Julie, born another two years later, was always sickly but grew up to become the most beautiful of the daughters. She would eventually marry an Italian count, but more on that later.

Susanna Reich, Author CLARA SCHUMANN: PIANO VIRTUOSO
Clara Weick Schumann made her professional debut in her native city of Leipzig, Germany at the age of nine and was counted among the great musicians of the 19th century at a time when few women had public lives. Groomed by her father to be a child prodigy, she defied him to marry the man she loved, composer Robert Schumann. Music sustained her through her husband's depression and suicidal despair. His early death left her with seven children to support. She courageously carried on her performing career for the next 35 years, performing until shortly before her death at seventy-six. CLARA SCHUMANN: PIANO VIRTUOSO captures the essence of this remarkable and resilient woman. It includes excerpts from Clara's diaries and letters, some never before published in English. Illustrated with over 60 compelling black and white prints and archival photographs of the piano virtuoso throughout her life. Ages 8 and Up ORDER: HARDCOVER The nineteenth century pianist and composer Clara Schumann grew up surrounded by music and gave her first public performance when she was only nine years old. By the time she was a teenager she was recognized as one of the greatest musicians of her day. I grew up surrounded by music, too, but my response to music was different from Clara's. When I heard music, I wanted to dance! I danced in the living room, the kitchen, the hallway, the bedroom, and on top of the backyard picnic table. I danced to Broadway musicals, classical symphonies, folk songs, and rock and roll. In high school I performed with a local ballet company and spent summers at the American Ballet Theatre School in New York and the Royal Academy of Dancing in London.

Citizen and the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The former did not afford women any of the rights provided for men, such as liberty, property, resistance to oppression,
voting, free speech, etc.; the latter reasoned that because women were the weaker sex, they should not (and moreover could not) be a part of society outside of the family.
by a description of the life and musical career of Clara Schumann will create greater recognition of the upward battle she (and all women) faced at that time, as well as the
notability of her career as wife, mother, and musician. Before delving into the life of Clara Schumann, a description of the world surrounding her must be made in order to understand the magnitude of her accomplishments. Among the positive factors of this time were changes in society from the late eighteenth century, such as population increases, rising life expectancy, and better living standards, which set the stage for more important changes of the next century (Moraze 80). Also during this period, nationalism was on the rise and encompassed nearly all aspects of universities, which increasingly allowed women access to an education, opening the door for their liberation (Gay 48).

    Writing Fun!
    Dear Boys and Girls,
You probably already know that a biography is a story about the life of a person, written by another person. I wrote about a musical personClara Schumann. I guess you could call it a musical biography.
Do you know what an autobiography is? Auto means self. So an autobiography is the story of a person's life written by that person.
Have some fun writing a musical autobiography. You can write about anything in your life that has something to do with music. For example: Tell about your earliest musical memory. Was it hearing someone sing to you? Do you remember playing rhythm instruments at school? Maybe it was watching a marching band in a parade. Or listening to your big sister's CDs.
Why do you remember it? What feelings do you have when you think of it? Do you think it changed you? In what way?
