Robert and Clara Schumann - A Love Story by Agnes Selby
Posted by Tel under SCHUMANN, Robert Robert and clara Schumann - A Love Story (c) By Agnes Selby Clara Schumann, nee Wieck, was a composer whose work has only recently become appreciated by audiences the world over. She was a dutiful daughter, a mother of eight children, a loyal friend and a loving wife. But first and foremost she was a concert pianist -1,299 programs are preserved in the Robert Schumann house in Zwickau which encompass the years from the time of her debut at the age of nine to her last concert in Frankfurt when she was 71 years old. Born on September 13th, 1819 to Friedrich Wieck and his wife Marianne, she was destined at birth by her father’s will to become a “Wunderkind”. By the age of five she could already perform ‘dances’ and spent hours practicing exercises. At about this time, Clara’s mother, tired of Wieck’s relentless

SCHUMANN, CLARA BIOGRAPHY
The daughter of Friedrich Wieck, her teacher and mentor until her marriage with Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann had embarked on a successful career as a pianist before her liaison with Schumann, leading to their marriage in 1840. She continued her international career as a performer and supported her young family after her husbands final insanity and death in 1856. She was helped after this by Brahms, to whom Schumann had given considerable encouragement. Orchestral and Chamber Music
Clara Schumann wrote a small number of works for orchestra and instrumental ensemble. These included an early piano concerto and a later piano concertino. Piano Music
The greater part of Clara Schumanns music for piano was written before her marriage. Her only sonata, however, came about as a present to her husband.

Introduction Cantatas Other Vocal Non-Vocal ... Z Clara Wieck Schumann (Composer) Born: September 13, 1819 - Leipzig , Germany
Died: May 20, 1896 - Franfurt, Germany Clara Josephine Wieck Schumann was a German musician, one of the leading pianists of the Romantic era, as well as a composer, and wife of composer Robert Schumann. Biography Clara Schumann was trained from the age of 5 with her father, the well-known piano pedagogue Friedrich Wieck. Prior to beginning her lessons, young Clara had only uttered her first words some time between 4 and 5 years old. In fact, she described herself as understanding as little as she spoke and as having disinterest in all that was passing around her, a condition that was not "entirely cured" - as she put it- until she was 8 years old. Clara Schumann's pattern of delayed speech and subsequent virtuosity is shared by other famous late-talkers such as fellow pianist Arthur Rubinstein, physicists Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman, and mathematician Julia Robinson among others.
Clara Schumann had a brilliant career as a pianist from the age of 13 up to her marriage. Her marriage to Schumann was opposed by her father. She continued to perform and compose after the marriage even as she raised seven children. An eighth child died in infancy. In the various tours on which she accompanied her husband, she extended her own reputation further than the outskirts of Germany, and it was thanks to her efforts that his compositions became generally known in Europe.

    Clara (Wieck) Schumann
    About
Granted, her married name might evidence her more historically venerated husband, but German-born composer and virtuoso pianist Clara Weick married down. She was born in 1819 and a child prodigy in the truest sense, establishing herself as one of Europe's most brilliant pianists long before she got hitched to composer Robert Schumann, with whom she had seven children. A gifted teacher and astute composer in her own right, she was known for her fluid expressionism and thoughtful interpretations; she also was the first concert pianist to institute the practice of recital memorization. When Robert died in 1854, she ceased composing and compiled a complete edition of his music. She cultivated a close platonic relationship to Brahms, who was rumored to love her deeply. She died on the 20th of May, 1896.

Ferguson is Clara most of the time, but she speaks as her father, and Robert Schumann, and Brahms, as needed. Even more impressively, she conjures them even in dramatic scenes where she is just Clara: protecting a less musically gifted sibling from an angry Herr Wieck; excitedly leading Schumann and Brahms on a hike through the countryside; reacting with careful sensitivity to an unexpected marriage proposal; and, most touchingly, paying a heartrending visit to an incapacitated Robert at the asylum where his increasing lunacy has forced her to send him (his symptoms are now thought to have been caused by syphillis and mercury poisoning).

Clara was born in Leipzig in 1819; she died in Frankfurt in 1896. Clara's parents were Friedrich Wieck (1785-1873), a music teacher, and Marianne Tromlitz Wieck Bargiel (1797-1872), a soprano and student of Wieck; Clara's father had resolved before her birth that she would be a great musician and child prodigy. Her first public appearance was in 1828 (age 9); first complete piano recital in 1830 (age 11); first extended tour in 1831. She performed extensively and studied piano, voice, violin, instrumentation, score reading, counterpoint, composition; wrote and published several pieces for solo piano. Robert Schumann came to live and study with Wieck in 1830, and asked permission to marry Clara in 1837; Wieck objected, and did all he could to prevent the wedding before Clara's 21st birthday when she would be legally able without his consent. Robert and Clara filed a lawsuit, and won, but out of spite went ahead and married the day before her birthday, September 12, 1840. They first lived in Leipzig where they both taught in the Conservatory there; they moved to Dresden in 1844, to Duesseldorf in 1850.

Robert and Clara Schumann - a biography
Robert and Clara Schumann - their lives, their love, and their music - and how it is intertwined in history.
Robert Schumann, composer and pianist - Clara Schumann, virtuoso pianist, composer, and wife of Robert Schumann - their lives and careers intertwined almost indefinably in history. Robert Alexander Schumann was born in 1810 in Zwickau, Saxony. He showed talent with both the written word and the piano. At the age of six, Robert began musical training and wrote his first composition at the age of twelve. His high school years proved the young Schumann to be as gifted in the literary arts as in music, influenced immeasurably by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert and the German poet Jean Paul Richter. Because Robert was uncertain which course of study to pursue, Robert's mother endeavored to place him in the law school at Leipzig. It was there that Robert met and studied under Friedrich Wieck, a well-known and celebrated piano teacher of the area. Friedrich Wieck recognized Robert's talent, but from the first, he doubted Robert's stability and discipline. These early impressions of the young man influenced Herr Wieck in his later assessment of his qualifications as a suitable husband for his daughter Clara Josephine Wieck.

Clara Wieck Schumann
(b.1819-d,1896)
Clara was one of the most celebrated performers of her time. Clara’s parents were Friedrich Wieck, a music teacher, and Marianne Tromlitz Wieck Bargiel, a soprano and student of Wieck. She studied with her father, Frederick Wieck, and made her concert debut at the age of 9.  She studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and quickly developed into a great virtuoso pianist, and she toured selected European cities when she was just 12 years old. When Clara was 12 years old, a young man named Robert Schumann began living in her parents’ home. Robert was a student of Clara’s father. In 1837, Robert asked to marry her, but for three years, Clara’s father refused permission. Then, Clara and Robert sued and a judge allowed them to be married on September 12th, 1840. At first, the marriage was a happy one and led to an excellent artistic partnership. Robert respected Clara’s talent and highly valued her opinion on his work. They first lived in Leipzig where they both taught in the Conservatory there; they moved to Dresden in 1844, to Düsseldorf in 1850. They had 8 children together. Unfortunately, in 1856 Clara’s husband attempted suicide. She put him in a mental institution where he died soon after. Clara then moved to Berlin in 1857, where she performed, taught, and edited Robert’s works and letters. She continued to give piano concerts, compose for the piano, and from 1878 to 1892 taught at the High Conservatory in Frankfurt. During an age when women were more or less expected to stay at home, Clara Schumann stand out as an example of a women who knew what she wanted to do and did it.

Grimaud is quizzical and warmly affectionate by Andrew McGregor
07 March 2006 If you've heard this lovely work once too often in a merely average performance, then drink deeply at Grimaud's spring, for you'll leave refreshed...not an overblown romantic gesture, and no cloying sentimentality; instead a strong, straightforward reading where every note seems just so, yet without feeling calculated. Grimaud is quizzical and warmly affectionate; nothing is taken for granted, and in Salonen and the Dresden Staatskapelle she has ideal partners, following wherever she leads, but never too slavishly. The Concerto's sense of characterful energy is echoed in the three Clara Schumann songs that follow, with mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter...definitely not mere pale imitations of Robert Schumann's genius as a songwriter. Grimaud and cellist Truls Mork fall into conversational nostalgia in a sweet-toned performance of Brahms's E minor Cello Sonata, and it's left to Grimaud alone to end her recital with memorable accounts of Brahms's Op. 79 Rhapsodies. I'm not sure I knew any more about the relationships between the three composers at the end of it all, but my appreciation of each of them has most definitely been enhanced.
