Franz Schubert (1797-1828) - classical composer:
In some ways the work of Franz Schubert has always been overshadowed by the dominating presence of Beethoven . They were contemporaries in the same city of Vienna at the time of significant change in the development and shape of music. While Beethoven was comparatively well-known and well funded, and working towards a major revolution in musical expression, Schubert was younger, less well-known, under-funded and his innovations in musical expression were not so well recognised at the time. In many ways it was not until after his death that others started to recognise his genius. Some of his works were then published and performed for the first time, and gradually his talents became widely recognised. During his short lifetime the lack of widespread public awareness didn't seem to bother Schubert. His writings suggested a man who was driven to spend his time composing, and he relied instead on the feedback and support of a small circle of friends and admirers. Franz Schubert belonged to a large family headed by his schoolmaster father. His father and a local teacher taught him music but his ability quickly exceed their standard. He joined the Imperial Court Chapel Choir as a boy soprano where he received further tuition, one of his teachers being the same Salieri who had been accused at one stage of poisoning

    Franz Schubert
Welcome to Schubert's lively world of music, coffee and parties! The National Arts Centre Orchestra is pleased to share the fascinating life, times and music of one of the world's greatest composers. Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) was one of the most phenomenal musical geniuses of all time. In his short life of just 31 years, he composed nearly a thousand compositions. Most composers who live three times as long don't write nearly that much. Amazing! How did he do it? In some ways Schubert was a very ordinary fellow. He went to coffee shops and parties, stayed up till the wee hours of the morning, then sacked out in a friend's apartment. But in other ways he was unique. We hope you have fun as you read on and get to know Schubert a little bit better. What was he really like? Was he the kind of person you'd want to meet? The kind of person you could hang out with? The kind of person you'd like to be yourself?

Executive summary: Symphony in C Major German composer, born on the 31st of January 1797, in the Himmelpfortgrund, a small suburb of Vienna. His father, Franz, son of a Moravian peasant, was a parish schoolmaster; his mother, Elizabeth Fitz, had before her marriage been cook in a Viennese family. Of their fourteen children nine died in infancy; the father, a man of worth and integrity, possessed some reputation as a teacher, and his school in the Lichtenthal was well attended. He was also a fair amateur musician, and transmitted his own measure of skill to his two elder sons, Ignaz and Ferdinand. In October 1808 he was received as a scholar at the Convict, which, under Antonio Salieri 's direction, had become the chief music school of Vienna, and which had the special office of training the choristers for the Court Chapel. Here he remained until nearly seventeen, profiting little by the direct instruction, which was almost as careless as that given to

The son of a schoolmaster who had settled in Vienna, Franz Schubert was educated as a chorister of the imperial court chapel and later qualified as a schoolteacher, briefly and thereafter intermittently joining his father in the classroom. He spent his life largely in Vienna, enjoying the company of friends, but never holding any position in the musical establishment or attracting the kind of patronage that Beethoven had twenty years earlier. Franz Schubert
    Biography
While Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work (including his teacher Antonio Salieri, and the prominent singer Johann Michael Vogl), wider appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment, and for most of his career he relied on the support of friends and family. Interest in Schubert's work increased dramatically in the decades following his death. Read more at Wikipedia... You can edit this biography at Wikipedia. Throughout his childhood Franz Schubert developed a dedication to music and studied piano, organ, violin and singing. By 1814 he had already produced a lot of work, including piano pieces, string quartets, his first symphony and a three act opera.
Although Schubert was forced by his family to take on a job as a teacher in his father's school, he still continued to compose and he managed to produce more music. During this period he gathered with friends for domestic evenings dedicated to Schubert's music, later known as the "Schubertiads". Song like "Der Wanderer" and "Die Forelle" where introduced.
In 1822 he got infected by syphilis and was in deep financial needs, marking this time as a dark period. But Schubert still kept creating new work like "Schöne Müllerin" the "Eighth Symphony ("unfinished")" and a string Quartet d Minor ("Death and the Maiden"). Although he was known at his time as a songwriter, his work included a lot of Symphonies, String Quartets, piano sonatas and more.

      Schubert, Franz Peter
Schubert, Franz Peter u r sh OO u rt) [ key , Austrian composer, one of the most gifted musicians of the 19th cent. His symphonic works represent the best legacy of the classical tradition, while his songs exemplify the height of romantic lyricism. Displaying remarkable talent in childhood, he was first taught to play the violin and piano by his father and his brother, and then studied the organ and singing at a local church. His beautiful voice gained him admittance in 1808 to the imperial chapel choir and the Royal Seminary, where he later studied composition with Salieri . Schubert wrote his first symphony in 1813, and in that year he left the Seminary. From 1814 to 1816 he taught at his father's elementary school, devoting his spare hours to composing lieder that give evidence of his inexhaustible melodic genius.

Schubert, Franz (1797-1828) Franz Peter Schubert is often regarded as the consummate tragic artist: sickly, poor, prolific, and unappreciated during his lifetime. This view is only partially true, however. Although he remained relatively unknown outside of his native Vienna, Schubert did achieve substantial popular success, particularly for his songs ( lieder Still, the depth of Schubert's talent remained unknown until after his death because many of his orchestral works, including his symphonies and operas, were unperformed and unpublished during his lifetime. Only when these large instrumental works came to light following his deaththrough the help of friends and composers such as Liszt, Schumann, and Brahmsdid his reputation grow. Sponsor Message.
Schubert's music bridges the classical and romantic styles and is known for its simplicity and depth of feeling. He often juxtaposes moods within a piece, evoking, for example, both sadness and conviviality. In its supposedly "feminine character," Schubert's music was long regarded as the antithesis of Beethoven's. In the words of the nineteenth-century composer and critic Robert Schumann, who first articulated the opposition, the feminine Schubert "pleads and persuades where the man [Beethoven] commands."

This page hosted by Get your own Free Home Page One of the greatest composers of Romantic lieder, Franz Schubert lived only a short while, but gave the world a body of music that resonates across time. He was born near Vienna in 1797, the son of a schoolmaster. He began his rather spotty musical education with his father, who taught the boy the violin; his brother taught him the rudiments of piano playing. Schubert had a pleasing singing voice, and at eleven was accepted to the choir of the Imperial Court Chapel; through this appointment, he was able to attend the prestigious City Seminary, where he became a violinist in the school orchestra. He also began to compose - songs, string quartets, and overtures. At sixteen, he wrote his first symphony; at seventeen, his first Mass was produced to great success. Leaving the Seminary, Schubert returned home to teach at his father's school. This proved unfulfilling, and in 1817 he moved back into Vienna to take up the musical life. In short order, his songs and vocal quartets were the rage of the town; curiously, however, he couldn't land a good salaried job. He continued to compose his songs, an occasional symphony, and a large body of chamber and piano works. He also hosted musical soirées, which brought more fame and popularity to the short, pudgy composer. Always in tenuous health, he became ill in 1822; this put him in the hospital for a while, after which he tried to compose some incidental music for the theatre...this was a complete failure.

    Schubert's Early Life and Training
Schubert was the son of a schoolmaster, his father an amateur but a keen musician. He was born in Vienna on January 31, 1797, initially learned violin from his father and piano from his elder brother. He showed great talent and interest in music that aged 11, he was accepted as a choir boy in the court chapel. He later became a school teacher, composing whenever time allowed. As his talent for composing songs became more known, later gave up teaching to concentrate in composition. As a teenager, he produced piano pieces and string quartets. He also composed his first symphony, a three-act opera
