He is particularly noted for his original melodic and harmonic writing. While Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work (including his teacher Antonio Salieri , and the prominent singer Johann Michael Vogl ), wider appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment, and for most of his career he relied on the support of friends and family. Interest in Schubert's work increased dramatically in the decades following his death.

with Murray Perahia and Thomas Kelly Franz Schubert may be the least understood of the great composers. For decades after he died in 1828, at the age of thirty-one, most of Schubert’s work was unknown. And when hundreds of Schubert’s compositions were first published in the late 1800’s, romantic legends about the composer suddenly became popular. Schubert was often described as a tortured but amiable geniusa nearsighted, portly cherub of a man who lived in abject poverty and found comfort only in a glass of wine. As with many aspects of history, the truth is more complex. Schubert certainly had a difficult life, but he appears to have been happy simply to create music. He once said "I have come into the world for no purpose but to compose."

In his own words...

"No one understands another's grief, no one understands another's joy... My music is the product of my talent and my misery. And that which I have written in my greatest distress is what the world seems to like best." Austrian composer, one of the earliest of the Romantic movement. Schubert wrote prolifically in all genres, but is best remembered for his songs.
Schubert died at the age of thirty-one. One of his last wishes was to be buried near the composer he had most admired: Ludwig van Beethoven . The similarities of their lives are easy to see. Both struggled in many ways to create; both expressed in their music qualities that we identify with both the Classical and Romantic styles.
Schubert was the son of a middle-class schoolteacher who expected that his son would follow in his career. Franz's musical gift was recognized early and as a boy he sang in the Imperial Court. As a young man, however, he followed the wishes of his father and accepted a teaching post. His musical activities continued in his spare time and he surrounded himself with educated and like-minded members of the middle class. Here he found an immediate outlet for his music. By 1818, he resigned his teaching duties and turned to full-time composition. He continued to have the support of his friends, even while his success with publishers was limited. Before long, however, Schubert had another battle to fight illness. As early as 1822 the debilitating effects of syphilis began to take their toll, and along with his health, his financial condition declined. Nonetheless, he continued to compose to the end, producing some of his most profoundly beautiful music in his final years.

The son of a schoolmaster who had settled in Vienna, Franz Schubert was educated as a chorister of the imperial court chapel and later qualified as a schoolteacher, briefly and thereafter intermittently joining his father in the classroom. He spent his life largely in Vienna, enjoying the company of friends, but never holding any position in the musical establishment or attracting the kind of patronage that Beethoven had twenty years earlier. His final years were clouded by illness, as the result of a syphilitic infection, and he died in 1828, leaving much unfinished. His gifts had been most notably expressed in song, his talent for melody always evident in his other compositions. Schubert's compositions are generally numbered according to the Deutsch catalogue, with the letter D. Stage Works Church Music Among the various works Schubert wrote for church use particular mention may be made of the second of his six settings of the Mass.

    Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Vienna, 31 January 1797; died there, 19 November 1828). The son of a schoolmaster, he showed an extraordinary childhood aptitude for music, studying the piano, violin, organ, singing and harmony and, while a chorister in the imperial court chapel, composition with Salieri (1808-13). By 1814 he had produced piano pieces settings of Schiller and Metastasio, string quartets, his first symphony and a three-act opera. Although family pressure dictated that he teach in his father's school, he continued to compose prolifically; his huge output of 1814-15 includes Gretchen am Spinnrade and (both famous for their text-painting) among numerous songs, besides two more symphonies, three masses and four stage works. From this time he enjoyed the companionship of several friends, especially Josef von Spaun, the poet Johann Mayrhofer and the law student Franz von Schober. Frequently gathering for domestic evenings of Schubert's music (later called 'Schubertiads'), this group more than represented the new phenomenon of an educated, musically aware middle class: it gave him an appreciative audience and influential contacts (notably the Sonnleithners and the baritone J.M. Vogl), as well as the confidence, in 1818, to break with schoolteaching. More songs poured out, including

A brief biography of franz Peter schubert, listing his major compositions, outlining his career, and giving insights into his personality.
    http://www.carolinaclassical.com/articles/schubert.html
    by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
In the history of music, no composer ever displayed true genius for melodic writing in quite the same way as Franz Schubert, whose remarkable gifts are most widely remembered today through his prolific composition of songs for voice and piano. These masterpieces poured freely from his mind so quickly and with such a degree of perfection that his ability to produce many musical works in a short time has become legendary. Although he composed for every available medium, he was least successful when writing operas or duos for solo instrument with piano. Among his one thousand compositions that survive, his art songs or Lieder comprise the largest portion of his works. This is not really surprising since some of the greatest singers of his native Vienna were among his circle of friends and musical collaborators.
Early in his adult life, Schubert abandoned a financially secure career as a teacher in order to devote himself completely to his music. He once said, "I have come into the world for no purpose but to compose." Schubert never again worked in a public profession; he went on just a few short journeys; and he lived basically an inconspicuous life which has caused many to speculate on the nature of his personal activities. Whatever these obscure details may have been, they matter little to those who cherish his glorious music and his noble spirit.
Schubert's was truly a Romantic spirit, but his brief life was not one of comfort and ease. His career as a composer was a miraculous span of years in which music of unparalleled beauty and imagination poured forth in the form of his
