Schoenberg , Arnold (Franz Walter) Born: Vienna, 13 Sept 1874
Died: Los Angeles, 13 July 1951
Nationality: Austro-Hungarian composer, an American citizen from 1941
He began violin lessons when he was eight and almost immediately started composing, though he had no formal training until he was in his late teens, when Zemlinsky became his teacher and friend (in 1910 he married Zemlinsky's sister). His first acknowledged works date from the turn of the century and include the string sextet "Verklärte Nacht" as well as some songs, all showing influences from Brahms, Wagner and Wolf. In1901-3 he was in Berlin as a cabaret musician and teacher, and there he wrote the symphonic poem "Pelleas und Melisande," pressing the Straussian model towards denser thematic argument and contrapuntal richness. That, however, was not possible immediately. The sense of key was left behind as Schoenberg set poems by George in the last two movements of String Quartet no.2 and in the cycle "Das Buch der hängenden Gärten," and for the next few years he lived in the new, rarefied musical air. With tonality had gone thematicism and rhythmic constraint; works tended to be short statements of a single extreme musical state, justifying the term 'expressionist' (Five Orchestral Pieces; Three Pieces and Six Little Pieces for piano). The larger pieces of this period have some appropriate dramatic content: the rage and despair of a woman seaching for her lover ("Erwartung"), the bizarre stories, melancholia and jokes of a distintegrating personality ("Pierrot lunaire," for reciter in Sprechgesang with mixed quintet), or the progress of the soul towards union with God ("Die Jakobsleiter").

(more info) Arnold Schoenberg has exercised very considerable influence over the course of music in the 20th century, particularly through his development and promulgation of theories of composition in which unity in a work is provided by the use of a determined series, usually consisting of the twelve possible different semitones, their order also inverted or taken in retrograde form, and in transposed versions. Schoenberg's earlier compositions are post-romantic in character, followed by a period in which he developed his theories of atonality, music without a key or tonal centre. Born in Vienna in 1874, he spent his early career in Berlin, until the rise to power of Hitler made it necessary to leave Germany and find safety in America, where he died in 1951. With his pupils Anton Webern and Alban Berg, both of whom he outlived, he represents a group of composers known as the Second Viennese School.

[Index] Arnold Schoenberg's Second string quartet - The day music went mad By Norman Lebrecht / October 22, 2003 Of all the turning points in the history of music, one is instantly audible to the innocent ear. Shortly after the soprano starts singing in the third movement of Arnold Schoenberg's Second string quartet , the music takes leave of its key of F-sharp minor and veers off into an atonal abyss. In that instant, the harmonic laws that governed European music for 500 years are declared null and void. The rule that C, E and G can go sweetly together in a row but not B, C and D has been shattered. Beauty is no longer a musician's highest aspiration. It has been superseded by the abstract. When the quartet was first played in Vienna, four days before Christmas in 1908, it provoked a riot. Outraged citizens protested and several arrests were made. The music, amid some gorgeous passages, maintains its capacity to shock. I have seen 21st century listeners leap as if struck at its sounds of calculated discordance. The quartet was a milestone in the evolution of music - that much is undisputed. But what pushed its abrasive composer to challenge and overturn the natural order remains a matter of contention, an unresolved historical chord.

Arnold Schoenberg, composer
Arnold Franz Walter Schoenberg (the anglicized form of Schönberg - Schoenberg changed the spelling officially when he left Germany and re-converted to Judaism in 1933), (September 13, 1874 - July 13, 1951) was an Austrian and later American composer. Many of Schoenberg’s works are associated with the expressionist movements in early 20th-century German poetry and art, and he was among the first composers to embrace atonal motivic development. Schoenberg is particularly well-known as the innovator of the twelve-tone technique, a compositional technique involving tone rows. He was also a painter, an important music theorist, and an influential teacher of composition.
Arnold Schoenberg was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family in the Leopoldstadt district (in earlier times a Jewish ghetto) in Vienna. Although his mother Pauline, a native of Prague, was a piano teacher (his father Samuel, a native of Bratislava, was a shopkeeper), Arnold was largely self-taught, taking only counterpoint lessons with the composer Alexander von Zemlinsky, who was to become his first brother-in-law. In his twenties, he lived by orchestrating operettas while composing works such as the string sextet Verklärte Nacht (“Transfigured Night”) in 1899. He later made an orchestral version of this, which has come to be one of his most popular pieces. Both Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler recognized Schoenberg’s significance as a composer, Strauss when he encountered Schoenberg’s

Rosen, Charles Arnold Schoenberg . With a new Preface. 128 p. 5-1/4 x 8 1975, 1981, 1996 Paper COBE $15.00sp ISBN: 978-0-226-72643-4 (ISBN-10: 0-226-72643-6) Spring 1996
In this lucid, revealing book, award-winning pianist and scholar Charles Rosen sheds light on the elusive music of Arnold Schoenberg and his challenge to conventional musical forms. Rosen argues that Schoenberg's music, with its atonality and dissonance, possesses a rare balance of form and emotion, making it, according to Rosen, "the most expressive music ever written." Concise and accessible, this book will appeal to fans, non-fans, and scholars of Schoenberg, and to those who have yet to be introduced to the works of one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century.

  • Century?s Playlist (New York Times) This immensely ambitious book aims not only to conduct a survey of 20th-century classical composition but to come up with a history of that century as refracted through its music. Not One Misstep on the Winding Path Back to Schoenberg (Washington Post) Ahalf-century after his death, Arnold Schoenberg's ghost still haunts most modern composers. But his legacy is complex and in a brilliant concert at the Austrian Embassy on Wednesday night, violinist Alexander Gheorghiu and pianist Florian Mueller showed how the father of 12-tone music has been...

One of Opera Chic's favorite pastimes in Vienna is to visit the Arnold Sch¶nberg Center (they're so 1337 that they have a YouTube page full of videos and a fantastic MySpace page as well): Arnie, the greatest Austrian ever to move to California, gets lots of l0ve there from scholars, tourists tired of the usual visits to Schonbrunn and the Belvedere, and simple hangers-on (check out the library to see the cute very serious looking young aspiring composers who hang out there spying all those scores and wondering how they can make their stuff sound NOT like a wheezing washing machine). There was a lovely exhibit re: young Arnie, with lots of memorabilia and manuscripts. So here's Opera Chic's field trip report. A humongous map of Arnie's Vienna. L'homme du train. The dorkiest revolutionary in history.
The New York Times , confused as always when confronted by new things, greets the exile with the not so flattering headline, "The Enigma Of Modern Music Arrives" like, beware of Jews carrying atonality. The maestro's study on North Rockingham, a few houses down the street from the place where OJ Simpson's wife and a friend committed suicide in that most unusual of fashions in 1994, has been shipped off to Vienna after his passing and recreated in the center. We loved the fat pencils and the customized pencil cases.
