In Bratislava (Preßburg). geboren und aufgewachsen, hörte er noch Franz Liszt am Klavier und erhielt dort auch seine erste musikalische Ausbildung bei dem örtlichen DomOrganisten und einem Franziskanerpater. 1888 übersiedelte die Familie nach Wien, wo Schmidt am Konservatorium studieren konnte: Klavier bei Leschetitzky, Harmönielehre bei Bruckner und Fuchs, Violoncello bei F. Hellmesberger. Bei einem Probespiel wurde er unter 40 Konkurrenten für die Cellogruppe der Wiener Phil harmoniker ausgewählt, der er bis 1911 angehörte. Für seine in jener Zeit entstandene Erste Symphonie erhielt er von der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde den Beethoven preis. Die erste Oper wurde vermutlich in Verbindung mit einem Pariser Gastspiel (1904) der Wiener Philharmoniker unter Gustav Mahler angeregt. Eine weitere Oper „Fredigundis" wurde 1922 an der Wiener Staatsoper aufgeführt. Schmidt hat noch drei weitere Symphonien geschrieben und das großangelegte Oratorium „Das Buch mit den sieben Siegeln" (1938).
