Introduction (born Naples, 26 October 1685; died Madrid, 23 July 1757).
Son of Alessandro Scarlatti In 1701 he was appointed organist and composer of the vice-regal court at Naples, where his father was maestro di cappella . The following year he took leave of absence and travelled with the family to Florence where Alessandro hoped for employment from Pnnce Ferdinando de' Medici. When this was not forthcoming Domenico returned to Naples, where he tried his hand at opera before his father removed him in 1705 and sent him to Venice to try his luck there. It may have been in Venice that he first met Handel , with whom he formed a strong attachment. (Another friendship made in Italy was with Thomas Roseingrave, who later championed Scarlatti's music in England and Ireland.) By 1707, however, Scarlatti was in Rome, assisting his father at San Maria Maggiore, and he remained in Rome for over 12 years, occupying posts as maestro to the dowager Queen of Poland from 1711, to the Marquis de Fontes from 1714, and at St. Peter's (assistant

domenico scarlatti His early life and musical training in Italy, later work in Portugal and Spain.
http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxdscarl.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Domenico Scarlatti Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples on October 26th, 1685. The high rank of his godparents is proof of the esteem in which his father, Alessandro Scarlatti, was held as maestro di cappella . Domenico's musical gifts developed with an almost prodigious rapidity. At the age of sixteen he became a musician at the chapel royal, and two years later father and son left Naples and settled in Rome, where Domenico became the pupil of the most eminent musicians in Italy. The originality of Bernardo Pasquini"s inventions and his skill in elaborating them, and Francesco Gasparini's solid science and intense vitality united to form the basis on which Domenico developed his own genius. His association with Corelli (Gasparini being a pupil of Corelli) also contributed to the evolution of his adolescent genius and soon Domenico Scarlatti became famous in his country principally as a harpsichordist. He served for five years (1714-19) as maestro di cappella at the Cappella Giulia in the Vatican. He composed at least one oratorio (1709) and more than a dozen operas for his father's Neapolitan theatre, S Bartolomeo (1703-4), the Roman

Domenico's employment took him to royal courts and chapels in Naples (1701), Rome (1709), Lisbon (1720) and Spain (1729). In 1708 Handel met Domenico in Italy and the two traveled together to Rome where Cardinal Ottoboni arranged a friendly competition. With respect to the harpsichord it was ruled that the two were equal, but, on the organ, Domenico quickly acknowledged his rival's superiority. The two remained good friends until Domenico's death. Scarlatti was the first composer to explore the free style of playing the harpsichord (he composed over 600 sonatas for that instrument); in addition, he wrote operas oratorios cantatas , and other sacred works.

A biography of the son of Alessandro scarlatti, domenico scarlatti, his musical training in Italy and later work in Portugal and Spain.
http://www.carolinaclassical.com/scarlatti/index.html
by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples on October 26th, 1685. He was the sixth of ten children of Alessandro Scarlatti and Antonia Anzalone. Largely, the events of his childhood are undocumented, but it is likely that his father provided all of his early musical training. Domenico's musical gifts developed at a prodigious rate. The first official record of his employment (at the age of 16) states that on September 13, 1701, he was appointed organista e compositore di musica at the royal chapel of Naples where his father was maestro di cappella . The younger Scarlatti's official duties in this position remain unknown, and there are no existing manuscripts of any sacred musical compositions from this period.
In 1702 Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti left Naples for Florence on a four-month leave of absence, a journey in which they sought possible employment for Domenico from Prince Ferdinando de Medici. While in Florence, Domenico met the keyboard instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori, who was then experimenting with the hammer action of his gravicembalo col piano e forte.
