FLABBY PRELUDES FOR A DOG: AN ERIK SATIE PRIMER
by KENNETH GOLDSMITH
WFMU's LCD, East Orange, N.J. Fall 1997 In the midst of an art opening at a Paris gallery in 1902, Ambient music was born. Erik Satie and his cronies, after begging everyone in the gallery to ignore them, broke out into what they called Furniture Music that is, background musicmusic as wallpaper, music to be purposely not listened to. The patrons of the gallery, thrilled to see musicians performing in their midst, ceased talking and politely watched, despite Satie's frantic efforts to get them to pay no attention.
Today, Furniture Music is unavoidable. Nowhere are we free from the tyranny of it; we can't walk into a store or deli without hearing the generally dreadful stuff drifting through the environment. As a matter of fact, people buy Ambient music to fill up the space, to make it easier to work in, to make love in, to relax in; today, there's a goddamned Furniture Music industry. When was the last time you were at a dinner party where there was no Furniture Music tinkling away in the background?

Erik Satie (1866 - 1925) In the minds of some observers, Erik Satie was simply an eccentric composer of weird little ditties. True, his early musical education was unsatisfactory, and most of his works were miniatures for the piano which seemed very much to defy any of the expected conventions of music. Yet he should not be dismissed too hastily, because his ideas were to have a profound influence on many musical developments over a broad timespan. Foremost amongst those composers influenced by Satie was his contemporary Debussy , the later French composer Ravel, and Stravinsky. In his 40s, Satie made up for his earlier lack of dedication at the Paris Conservatory when he decided to study with d'Indy and Roussel, passing these exams with distinction. Nevertheless he was always well acquainted with the music of composers past and present, and did not like the large scale Romantic trends led by Wagner . For a while he earned a living playing the piano and accordion in bars and cafes in Montmartre, where he also wrote a number of popular songs. The picture we have of Satie the man is as someone who was pointedly independent, rebellious, even ruthless and scathing. He observed life with a wit frequently thick with satire and parody, yet underlying this he appeared to have a philosophical, deeply spiritual side. He became something of a celebrity among other composers, notably Debussy and "Les Six" (including Georges Auric , Poulenc and particularly Darius Milhaud) to whom he was very supportive. He remained the avand-garde father-figure until his death from cirrhosis of the liver (suggesting a lifestyle over-indulging in alcohol).

His aesthetic of ironic simplicity, as in the (1895), acted as a nationalist antidote to the perceived excesses of German Romanticism. Mr. J. Bernlef
Koestraat 36"
Amsterdam, Holland Dear Mr. Bernlef:
Cordially yours,
John Cage
And another recollection by John Cage:
In September, 1963, we had ten pianists to play one of Satie's Vexations in relays, including me and one music critic who thought he could play the piece and wanted to get in the act. I forget his name. He was very friendly, but he made more mistakes than the others. Viola Farber, the dancer, played the first twenty minutes. While she played, someone on her left was sitting on the bench ready to slide over and pick up the piece so there wouldn't be a hitch in it. I hadn't realized Andy [Warhol] was there. But even if he wasn't, it doesn't surprise me that his work followed the same lines. Of course, artists are encouraged by other things that happen, but mostly by what is either in the air or already inside them. Andy has fought by repetition to show us that there is no repetition really, that everything we look at is worthy of our attention. That's been the major direction for the twentieth century, it seems to me.

Erik Satie Biography
Eric Alfred Leslie Satie (born Honfleur 17 May 1 July in Paris ) was a French composer , performing pianist , and publicist . He also described himself as a 'gymnopedist' (in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies ), and later as a 'phonometrograph' or 'phonometrician' (someone who measures and writes down sounds — preferring this definition of his profession to musician , after he had been called 'a clumsy but subtle technician' in a book on contemporary French composers in 1911). Eventually, in the last year of his life, he also became a cameo film actor http://hem.fyristorg.com/ebay/wav/entracte.rm

Erik Satie
Along the right hand edge of the drawing there is a concealed image of a dog like creature associated with Anubis, one of the Egyptian gods of the underworld. This strange animal form also appears to be strongly connected with Erik Satie's 1892 ballet 'Uspud'. Satie was a Rosicrucian and had been a great friend of Picasso, who was said by Picasso, to have been one of the most important influences in his life. The two had worked together on Jean Cocteau's 'Parade' in 1917, and they had a strong mutual interest in Alchemy and the Occult. Uspud is a deeply mystical and satirical work; it is short and full of strange imagery, like the 1934 drawing, it unfolds around the theme of the Crucifixion. In the final act, there is a description that strongly resembles the image of Anubis in the drawing. There is a further description of fishes with the heads and wings of a bird which appears to be represented pictorially in the same part of the drawing.
Uspud Act III
The top of a mountain: a crucifix above. Uspud, clad in homespun garments. prostrates himself before the crucifix: for a long time he prays and weeps.

Satie's music, in sound and aesthetics, was fundamentally different from the prevailing 19th-century German school that prized ideals of continuity and development. It is music as sound per se (Musique d'ameublement, i.e., "Furniture Music" or "Music for Furnishing", 1920). In Musiques intimes et secretes ("Intimate and Secret Music") and the famou...
