He initially considered himself to be a conducting composer, until in 1983 when, following a performance of Mahler's third symphony with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London undertaken at short notice, he overnight became a composing conductor. Now following an international conducting career he has still managed to preserve his creativity as a composer and each new work is eagerly awaited. His first large scale orchestral work Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra ('...auf den ersten blick und ohne zu wissen...' ) The Trial which Salonen felt expressed something about the imaginary world that his piece inhabits. Salonen's second orchestral work Giro is also from this period and uses something of the same harmonic structure. 10 years were to pass before Salonen had the time to complete another such large-scale piece. But despite the witty and elegant solos of James Clark (violin), David Cohen (cello), Kenneth Smith (flute), some ravishing sounds from the horns and bassoon, and double-bassist Neil Tarlton's chuckling cadenza in the Trio of the Minuet, the symphony was under-articulated and glib, with little sense of wonder at the sheer vivacity of the scoring. Handicapped by a seating arrangement that made Elizabeth Burley's fortepiano inaudible, this was no more than a casual nod to pre-Romantic music. It's common enough to confuse happiness with a lack of seriousness but plain wrong to do so in this seriously happy symphony.

Los Angeles Magazine's Richard Pietschmann called Salonen "a mesmerizing conductor with catlike moves on the podium; a crowd pleaser with looks, charisma and flair; and a musician's musician who enjoys a profound rapport with his orchestra.... Born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1958, Salonen was the only child of two loving and nurturing parents. His father, a banker, and his mother, a homemaker, were encouraging but not domineering. Salonen's godfather, who didn't know a great deal about children, taught the young boy to read at the ripe age of three. That changed Salonen's life. Not interested in the piano, which his mother started him on a year later, he waited and tried the recorder at age nine. Salonen's home was always filled with the sounds of music, and he kept trying different instruments until one stuck. After the recorder, he tried the French horn; then he gave the piano another chancehis mother had been smart enough not to push it on him in the first place.
