The Set List July 24, 2007 Times Not Yet A-Changin' For CD Giveaways Patrick Goldstein's Tuesday column was killed by the Los Angeles Times, though LAObserved.com snagged a copy, and in it Goldstein suggested that the Times follow the lead of the U.K. Mail on Sunday, which recently included copies of the new Prince CD in its Sunday edition. Circulation hit 2.9 million. His argument is rock solid: Newspapers need to attract readers; so called "heritage" artists are looking for new ways to get music into the hands of consumers; partnerships would help save the paper from compromises such as front-page ads. But what he proposes is getting music from "heritage" artists, or presumably ones he likes: Elvis Costello, Beck, Ryan Adams, Ry Cooder, Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle. His mistake? Prince was a superstar and remains a person of interest to millions. On top of that, he is an intelligent free agent willing to turn his back on the old-fashioned machine. What Goldstein doesn't appear to realize is that all but one of the artists he lists, Earle, have comfortable deals with major labels. Recording costs are picked up, they get artistic freedom and they have a marketing partner in the label. Unlike Prince, none of them were ever superstars. But like most showbiz Angelenos, he’s got more in mind: What he really wants to do is compose, and in 2009, he will step down from the L.A. job to give himself more time to do so. On October 5, Miller Theatre will present a Salonen retrospective as part of its “Composer Portraits” series. He spoke with Justin Davidson. Has your balance between conducting and composing already started to change? I’ve already cut down on conducting. I’m almost at 50-50 this year. There’s also a so-called life that has to be lived at some point, and that is what tends to eat into the composing bit, because it’s not structured by an organization, the way conducting is. So if I put aside 60 percent of the year for composing, it winds up being 50-50.

A young genius who - through a misunderstanding, he claims - gave his name as Mozart in the entrance examination for the Sibelius Academy's conducting class. Salonen - whose awards as a composer include the Prix Italia - is perhaps not Mozart, but he is unquestionably one of the most highly regarded and successful conductors of his generation. Among Salonen's weapons are his unusually clear beat, his effective use of rehearsal time, his consistently clear and dynamic interpretations and - more often in the concert hall than in the recording studio - his capacity to throw himself emotionally on to the level of a wild man when dynamite is needed. Salonen's debut in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1983, at the age of 25, was an international sensation. He received an appointment as a regular visiting conductor with the Philharmonia, a record contract with CBS (now Sony) and a rapid tour as a visiting conductor with leading orchestras. He made a particularly good impression in 1984 in Los Angeles, where previous artistic directors of the Philharmonic Orchestra have included Zubin Mehta and Carlo Maria Giulini. Salonen was appointed artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1989, taking up the appointment in 1992.
