He studied with Gassmann and others in Vienna, and also knew Gluck (who became his patron) and Metastasio. In 1774 he succeeded Gassmann as court composer and conductor of the Italian opera; from 1788 he was also court Kapellmeister. He made his reputation as a stage composer, writing operas for Vienna from 1768 and presenting several in Italy, 1778-80. Later he dominated Parisian opera with three works of 1784-7; Tarare (1787), his greatest success, established him as Gluck's heir. In 1790 he gave up his duties at the Italian opera. As his style became old-fashioned his works lost favour, and he composed relatively little after 1804, but he remained a central and influential figure in Viennese musical Iife. His many pupils included Beethoven Schubert and Liszt There is little evidence of any intrigues against Mozart , still less of the charge of poisoning. Salieri's circa 40 Italian operas are traditional in their emphasis on melodic expression, but they also show Gluck's influence, with dramatic choral writing, much accompanied recitative and careful declamation: some combine seria and buffa elements. Among his many other compositions are oratorios, church music, cantatas, arias, vocal ensembles, songs and orchestral and chamber works.

"Amadeus" and Mozart:
Setting the Record Straight
By A. Peter Brown "For the respect his works have commanded of musicians, and the popularity they have enjoyed among wider audiences, he is probably the most admired composer in the history of Western music." With this appraisal the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , published in 1980, begins its magisterial article on Beethoven. More than a decade later one might not apply this statement to the Teutonic Goliath but to the David of Mozart. Not only is this year (1991) the bicentennial of Mozart's death, it also comes at a time when his pristine classical image has become the preferred taste over Beethoven's more extroverted expression. Rehabilitating Antonio Salieri
From Young Composers
Jump to: navigation search Just for the fun of it, I here propose to rehabilitate Maestro Antonio Salieri, who has had possibly the worst press any decent composer has ever had to suffer in the history of Western music. I intend to do it here because it’s the least noticed of the various sections of this realm and I’d like to see how long it takes people to notice this slight return. I intend to do the debunking of the slanders of which he has been a victim by going through the movie Amadeus, which is where most people get their ideas of him, scene by scene and pointing out the flaws. Those who wish to know how Mozart is misrepresented in it can damn well go read a book about him. I would like to point out here that I still love that movie; it’s brilliant. But the misrepresentation that goes on in that thing – not merely of the character but even of the events in the life of Salieri – verges on the criminal. About the only things they got right in it was his bit about the ‘ten minutes of ghastly scales’ (but I’ll be getting to that) and how much he liked sweets.

ANTONIO SALIERI (1750 - 1825)
A ntonio was born on August 18th 1750 in the Italian town of Legnano in the Republic of Venice. He was taught the violin and harpsichord by his older brother Francesco, who had studied with Tartini. In 1765 he moved to Venice and in 1766 to Vienna, where he was admitted to Emperor Joseph II's musical establishment.
I n 1769 Salieri composed his first of over forty operas, Le donne letterate, to a libretto by Luigi Boccherinis brother, Giovanni. During his long life in Vienna, he held all the major posts in the Viennese musical establishment. He succeded his friend and 'mentor' Florian Gassmann as Kammerkomponist and Kapellmeister of the Italian Opera in 1774. In 1788 he succeded Guiseppe Bonno as Hofkapellmeister.
H e enjoyed quite a reputation as a teacher. His pupils included Beethoven, Hummel, Schubert and Liszt. He was also the first director of Vienna's music Conservatoire, founded in 1817.
S alieri was among the leading opera composers of his age. Research in Vienna and a close study of his scores reveal him to have been a prolific, versatile and adventurous composer for the stage.

Antonio Salieri
Salieri studied violin and harpsichord with his brother Francesco, and violin with the Legnago organist Giuseppe Simonie. After becoming orphaned in 1765, he was taken to Venice, where he studied thoroughbass with Giovanni Pescetti, the deputy maestro di cappella of St. Mark's, and singing with Ferdinando Pacini, a tenor there. In 1766 Florian Gassmann took him to Vienna, where he continued his studies and met Metastasio and Gluck There his Armida (1771) was a great success. After Gassmann's death in 1774, Salieri became court composer and conductor of the Italian opera; in 1788 he succeeded Giuseppe Bonno as court Kapellmeister. Tarare (1787); the opera was subsequently recomposed and the libretto translated by Da Ponte for a 1788 production at the Vienna Burgtheater under the title Axur Re d'Ormus. From 1788 to 1804 Salieri wrote sixteen operas, of which only Palmira, Regina di Persia (1795) had international success. He cited a distaste with modern trends for his abandonment of dramatic music after 1804. After the death of Joseph II in 1790, he successfully petitioned Leopold II for his release from the direction of the opera, although he retained his post as court Kapellmeister.

He studied violin and harpsichord with his brother Francesco, who was a student of Giuseppe Tartini. After the death of his parents, he moved to Padua, then to Venice, where he studied thoroughbass with Giovanni Pescetti. In 1766 Salieri met Florian Leopold Gassmann, who invited him to attend the court of Vienna and there trained him in composition based on Fux's Gradus ad Parnassus. He remained in Vienna for the remainder of his life, and in 1774, when Gassmann died, Salieri was appointed the court composer by Emperor Joseph II, and Imperial Royal Kapellmeister in 1788.
During his time in Vienna he acquired great prestige as a composer and conductor, particularly of opera, and also of chamber and sacred music. The most successful of his 43 operas were Les Danaïdes (1784), which was first presented as work of Gluck's, and Tarare (1787). He wrote comparatively little instrumental music, including just two piano concerti written in 1773.
He attained an elevated social standing, and frequently associated with other celebrated composers such as Joseph Haydn. As children, Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt all benefitted from his tutelage. He also taught Czerny, Hummel and a son of Mozart's.

it was followed by L'Amore innocute. In 1771 appeared Don Chisciotto, and D'Armida, and in 1779 La Scuota de Gelosi and Il Talismano. The next year La Dama Pastorella made its appearance.
Besides his thirty-three operas, which were written to Italian words, he composed three to French words and wrote one German opera, Die Neger. From 1804 Salieri devoted himself almost wholly to the service of the Imperial Chapel. In 1816 he celebrated his fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of his public career in Vienna, at which time he was decorated with the gold Civil-Ehrenmedaille. Up to 1818 he continued to conduct the concerts of the Tonkünstler-Societät, of which he was vice-president. Although a resident of Germany for fifty years, Salieri is said never to have learned to speak or write the German language. In 1824 he retired from his post as Court conductor, on a full salary, after fifty years of service; but he only lived a year to enjoy his hard-earned repose, dying in 1825 at the age of seventy-five.
Salieri, as a man, was generous and kindly, often assisting less fortunate musicians with money and free instruction. He was abstemious and simple in his tastes and fond of spending much time out of doors. His memory is darkened by his intrigues against Mozart, of whom he was extremely jealous. He caused the Emperor to withdraw his favor from the musician and sought in other ways to injure him. With most of the other eminent musicians of his time, how-ever, he was on terms of the greatest intimacy. To him Beethoven dedicated his three piano sonatas in 1799 and Haydn was one of his greatest friends and admirers. To the library of the Tonkunstler Societät Antonio Salieri left forty-one scores on his own hand-writing; thirty-four operas; and seven cantatas.
