Antonio Salieri was one of the most widely respected opera composers of the second half of the eighteenth century. Born in Legnano in northern Italy in 1750, the fifth son of a merchant, his early talents on the violin, harpsichord and in singing led to his move to Venice at the age of 15. There he attracted the attention of the Viennese composer Florian Gassmann who effectively adopted him, taking him to Vienna and facilitating further training and the requisite introductions in court circles. He quickly came to the notice of the emperor Joseph II, as well as the librettist Pietro Metastasio, and the reformist composer Gluck who remained a lifelong supporter. At the age of 24, Salieri became Court composer and director of the Italian opera, and some years later became Kapellmeister. Biography
Antonio Salieri is still better known today for the renowned composers with whom he was associated than for his own many and varied compositions. While he cannot be ranked among the great masters himself, he has nevertheless come into view as an underrated and important composer deserving of closer attention. Salieri was the dominant figure in Parisian opera from the mid to late 1780s. Tarare (1787), generally considered his finest achievement in the genre, is a masterpiece. He also wrote significant instrumental, sacred, and vocal compositions, and shaped the Viennese musical world that would produce so many important composers for a century and a half. Salieri's illustrious students included Beethoven Schubert Liszt , Hummel, and Czerny . There is no evidence to support the durable legend that he poisoned Mozart and created intrigues against him. One of his students was Wolfgang A. Mozart, Jr., whom he would probably not have selected for instruction had he harbored such malice toward his father.

Introduction (born Legnano, 18 August 1750; died Vienna, 7 May 1825). He studied with Gassmann and others in Vienna, and also knew Gluck (who became his patron) and Metastasio. In 1774 he succeeded Gassmann as court composer and conductor of the Italian opera; from 1788 he was also court Kapellmeister. He made his reputation as a stage composer, writing operas for Vienna from 1768 and presenting several in Italy, 1778-80. Later he dominated Parisian opera with three works of 1784-7; Tarare (1787), his greatest success, established him as Gluck's heir. In 1790 he gave up his duties at the Italian opera. As his style became old-fashioned his works lost favour, and he composed relatively little after 1804, but he remained a central and influential figure in Viennese musical Iife. His many pupils included Beethoven Schubert and Liszt . There is little evidence of any intrigues against Mozart , still less of the charge of poisoning.

    SALIERI, ANTONIO BIOGRAPHY
Thanks to Pushkin and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as Shaffer and the film Amadeus, Salieri has been cast as the villain in the tragedy of Mozart's early death. Antonio Salieri occupied a position of great importance in the music of Vienna. From 1774 he was court composer and conductor of the Italian opera, serving as court Kapellmeister from 1788 until 1824. Born in Legnago, he was brought as a boy to Vienna by Florian Gassmann, his predecessor as court Kapellmeister who supervised his musical training and education. He owed much to the influence and patronage of Gluck, to whom he seemed a natural successor in the field of opera. He won similar success to the latter also in Paris with his operas for the French stage. His pupils included Beethoven and Schubert, Czerny, Hummel, Moscheles and one of Mozart's sons. He was a prolific composer, principally in vocal music of all kinds. Operas Vocal and Choral Music Salieri wrote a quantity of church music, as well as oratorios. He left still more secular vocal music, ranging from cantatas and choruses to duets and solo arias.
