Jump to: navigation search Kaija Saariaho (born October 14 ) is a Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho studied composition in Helsinki Freiburg and Paris , where she has lived since 1982. Her studies and research at IRCAM have had a major influence on her music and her characteristically luxuriant and mysterious textures are often created by combining live music and electronics. Although much of her catalogue comprises chamber works, from the mid-nineties she has turned increasingly to larger forces and broader structures, such as the operas L’amour de loin , premiered at the 2000 Salzburg Festival (with a US premiere at the Santa Fe Opera in 2002), and Oltra mar , commissioned by the New York Philharmonic . Her second opera, Adriana Mater , was commissioned for the Op©ra National de Paris ’ 2006 season. Her second string quartet, Terra Memoria , was commissioned for the Emerson Quartet by Carnegie Hall for a June 2007 premiere.

SOMETHING OTHER THAN POLITICS ...
Kaija Saariaho by Charles T. Downey Thursday, March 30, 2006 Tonight was the big night in Paris, the world premiere of Kaija Saariaho's new opera, Adriana Mater , at the Op©ra national de Paris . It was to have been the jewel in the crown of a challenging and adventurous season of opera , the Op©ra national de Paris's commission of a new opera by the Finnish composer, whose L'Amour de Loin was such a sensation at the Salzburg Festival in 2000. In fact, it reunited much of the creative crew from that opera: composer Saariaho and librettist Amin Maalouf, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen (who replaced Kent Nagano for the Finnish National Opera production, now on DVD), and director Peter Sellars. (I should also note that L'Amour de Loin was dedicated to G©rard Mortier , then director of the Salzburg Festival and now at the head of the Op©ra national de Paris.) Critics from a score of foreign countries including Alex Ross of The New Yorker , who told me he was supposed to arrive yesterday were planning to be there for this massive media event. The unhappy news is coming out of Paris, however, that the premiere has been cancelled Ben, vive la France!

La Passion de Simone
To update a previous post on the sudden cancellation of American soprano Dawn Upshaw's anticipated peformance, this November 26, 2006 marked the premiere of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho 's new work, " La Passion de Simone " for the New Crowned Hope Festival (running from November 14, 2006 until December 13, 2006) at Vienna's Jugendstiltheater The opera is directed by Peter Sellars and lead by by Finnish conductor Susanna Maelkki . It is based on Simone Weil 's writings, specifically, " Gravity and Grace ". It follows the form of a Passion play , and therefore consists of fifteen stations. Each station is a separate interlude from Weil's life, and lead soprano Pia Freund is responsible for narrating the role. The operetta is a bit over one hour, and is an oratorio for soprano, choir, and electronics, as apparently there is some sort of media that is stationed throughout the audience to display Weil's "spoken word". It was for this new production that the news was made a few weeks ago that American soprano Dawn Upshaw canceled participation after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, earlier blogged about

    Basic biography
Before starting studying music, Kaija Saariaho studied visual arts at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki. From 1976-1981 she studied composition with Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy and from 1981-1982 with Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg. In 1982 she followed courses in computer music at Ircam in Paris, where she has been living and working since then.
Several of her compositions were awarded a.o. Stilleben (Prix Italia 1988, Ars Electronica prize 1989), Io (Ars Electronica prize 1989) and Lonh (The Nordic Music Prize 2000).
    On her music
Sensitive, colourful, refreshing and modernist. All of these words might come up, listening to Kaija Saariaho's music. The titles of her pieces provoke strong associations, but the music never is a simplistic interpretation of it. The use of tape and live electronics is frequent and adds to the hyper-sensitive character of the music.
The first time Saariaho is active in the musical world, is her participation in the
