Introduction (born Pesaro, 29 February 1792; died Passy, 13 November 1868). Both his parents were musicians, his father a horn player, his mother a singer; he learnt the horn and singing and as a boy sang in at least one opera in Bologna, where the family lived. He studied there and began his operatic career when, at 18, he wrote a one-act comedy for Venice. Further commissions followed, from Bologna, Ferrara, Venice again and Milan, where La pietra del paragone was a success at La Scala in 1812. This was one of seven operas written in 16 months, all but one of them comic. This level of activity continued in the ensuing years. His first operas to win international acclaim come from 1813, written for different Venetian theatres: the serious Tancredi and the farcically comic L'italiana in Algeri , the one showing a fusion of lyrical expression and dramatic needs, with its crystalline melodies, arresting harmonic inflections and colourful orchestral writing, the other moving easily between the sentimental, the patriotic, the absurd and the sheer lunatic. Two operas for Milan were less successful. But in 1815 Rossini went to Naples as musical and artistic director of the Teatro San Carlo, which led to a concentration on serious opera. But he was allowed to compose for other theatres, and from this time date two of his supreme comedies, written for Rome

Gioacchino Rossini was an Italian composer who wrote many operas. He is most
famous for an opera titled "The Barber of Seville," written in 1813. He also wrote four to
five operas a year, at one point in his life. Gioacchino was born in Pesaro, Italy on February 29, 1792. His mother and father
both worked in the opera. His mother was a singer and his father was a trumpet player. When Rossini was four, his mother took him to Bologna, Italy. There she found
singing engagements. While his mother was singing, he was taking music lessons. In
1804 Rossiniâs family settled in Bologna. By the time he was a teenager he had started to
write music. Rossini wrote his first opera when he was seventeen. That opera is called
"Demetrio e Polibio." His first opera to be performed on stage was written when he was eighteen, and is called "La cambiale di matrimonio." That opera was performed in

It was on February 29, 1792, that Gioachino Antonio Rossini first saw the light, at the small town of Pesaro, Italy, where his father, Giuseppe Rossini, was herald, or town-crier. He could also play the horn; and in Signora Rossini the old man had married a singer of some pretensions, so the two were to be frequently met with at fairs and other musical gatherings—she sustaining small parts on the stage, while he played the horn in the orchestra. Their little son was to be brought up as a musician, and the parents soon commenced to train him. At seven years of age he made his debut at Bologna. Paer's “Camilla” was produced there in 1799, and Gioachino was chosen to fill the part of the child. Beyond this incident, little more is known of Rossini's early life, save that while a boy he joined his parents in their musical excursions, when he generally played second horn in the orchestra. “Tancredi” was written for the Fenice Theater in 1813, and it at once laid hold of the Venetians. Its airs were sung everywhere, the gondoliers shaped them into serenades, and they even crept into the law courts, so that the judges had more than once to forbid their being hummed. To this opera belongs the exquisite cavatina “Di tanti palpiti,” far better than is the little anecdote which gave to it the title of “aria de' rizzi.” The day before the opera was to be given, Madame Malanotte took it into her head to dislike her opening air, insisting that Rossini must write her another. He returned home from the rehearsal, and it is said that while the servant was preparing a dish of rice which he had ordered, Rossini noted down this beautiful air.

GIOACHINO ANTONIO ROSSINI Italian musical composer, was born at Pesaro on the 29th of February 1792. His father was town trumpeter and inspector of slaughterhouses, his mother a baker's daughter. The elder Rossini's sympathies for the French became a source of trouble when, after the occupation of the papal state by the French in 1796, the Austrians restored the old regime. He was sent to prison , and his wife took Gioachino to Bologna , earning her living as a prima donna buffa at various theatres of the Romagna, where she was ultimately rejoined by her husband. Gioachino remained at Bologna in the care of a pork butcher , while his father played the horn in the bands of the theatres at which his mother sang. The boy had three years' instruction in the harpsichord from Prinetti of Novara , but Prinetti played the scale with two fingers only, combined his profession of a musician with the business of selling liquor, and fell asleep while he stood, so that he was a fit subject for ridicule with his critical pupil. Gioachino was taken from him and apprenticed to a smith . In Angelo Tesei he found a congenial master, and learned to read at sight, to play accompaniments on the
