The Life of Gioacchino Antonio Rossini
Of necessity the change in musical taste has pushed the old Italian masters of opera into the background. But they are by no means totally neglected. Wagner has not captured all the opera-goers! There are still a vast number who recognise charm of melody and clearness of musical form, and prefer an opera in which voices and orchestra are used with discrimination and taste, neither striving for mastery over the other. In spite of great advances, many still take the view that Haydn took when he wrote:
"Let your air be good, and your composition, whatever it be, will be so likewise, and will assuredly delight. It is the soul of music, the life, the spirit, the essence of a composition. Without it theorists may succeed in discovering and using the most singular chords and combinations, but nothing is heard after all but a laboured sound, which, though it may not vex the ear, leaves the head empty and the heart cold and unaffected by it."
To those who agree with Haydn the Rossini school is always welcome. Its chief exponents, besides Rossini himself, were Donizetti and Bellini, and the surviving operas of the three may now be considered.

La Cambiale de Matrimonio, was produced in Venice in 1810, and it was followed by a series of lively works, culminating in his masterpiece, Il Barbiere di Siviglia The Barber of Seville, 1816). Based on the comedy by Beaumarchais, the opera resounds with Rossini's brilliant arias, ensemble numbers, and his famous crescendos. Among his many other operas are L'italiana in Algeri La Cenerentola (1817), and Semiramide William Tell Stabat Mater (1842), in which his operatic style is still evident. en it fr de ... Compositori Gioacchino Rossini Gioacchino Rossini Biography of the Pesarese composer Gioacchino Antonio Rossini (Pesaro, 29th February 1792 - Paris, 13th November 1868), has been one of the greatest composers of the XIXth century.
In the first part of his life he was like one of his celebrated, overwhelming crescendo (he composed his first opera at 14 years old; then - as in order to begin a second existence - the premature and unexpected abandon of the theatre, the depression and the withdrawal in the peace of the parisian country in Passy.
He bore three months after the death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Swan of Pesaro - as he was called - impressed to melodramma a style destined to mark a new eopch and of which anyone after him, would have had to take into account; he set to music tens of operas without genre limit, from farces to comedies, to tragedies, to half-serious and serious ones.
His family was of modest origins: his father - called Vivazza, ardent supporter of the French Revolution - came from Lugo and was a professional player in the city band and in the local orchestra that supported the French occupation troops; his mother, Anna Guidarini, was born in Urbino and was a singer of quite good capability.
Therefore young Gioacchino spent his youth between his grandmother's and during his trips between Ravenna, Ferrara and Bologna where his father took refuge in the attempt to escape the capture after the restoration of the papal government. It's exactly in Bologna where he starts studying music and in particular the study of singing (he was contralto and singer at the Philarmonic Academy) and of spinetta with Giuseppe Prinetti, his first master.

ROSSINI Gioacchino Antonio (Pesaro 1792 – Passy de Paris 1868). Compositore.

In the opera seria for long recitatives he substituted more singing; in the opera buffa he inaugurated a new comedy style. He introduced many new instruments into the Italian orchestras. To him belongs the preghiera good baritone voice, and was an excellent pianist. In 1804 he had lessons in singing and pianoforte playing at Bologna. Gioacchino Antonio Rossini
Italian composer whose father was an inspector of slaughter-houses, but also a professional trumpeter. When the father was imprisoned for having backed the wrong side during the Napoleonic invasion, his mother took the young Rossini to Bologna where she earned a living as an opera singer. Rossini made an early reputation as an opera composer with his strong sense of melody and comedy, as seen in The Barber of Seville. His thirty-sixth opera, William Tell, was his last at the age of 37, for reasons which have never been clear, he stopped composing, writing only his Stabat Mater and a setting of the Mass in later life. He was something of a gourmet and invented the steak dish Tournedos Rossini.
