Steve Reich Homepage Biography Writings and Articles 'Close your eyes and see'... ... Links Photo: John Halpern Steve Reich was born in New York in 1936 and spent much of his early childhood travelling from New York to California, the result of parental separation but an experience that later in life was to manifest in some degree in his composition Different Trains. By the age of 14 he was a kit drummer playing and listening to jazz and dance music and earning money to support further musical studies. In 1957 he graduated from Cornell University with honours in Philosophy and from 1958 to 1961 studied composition at the Julliard School of Music and later attended Mills College in California where he 'studied' with Milhaud and Berio. The reason I have exclaimed 'studied' is that Reich himself has said that he underwent more important studies with the likes of Hall Overton, William Austin and Vincent Persichetti and goes on to say that 'some people that are well known may or may not have a gift for teaching'.
From here on Reich used augmentation, diminution and sudden as opposed to gradual phase changes in works like Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ, Clapping Music (born out of the desire to perform a piece needing only the human body to be present) Six Pianos and Music for Pieces of Wood. All these pieces explore the repeated phrase or pattern played out of phase by different players thus producing the rhythmic ambiguity of 'where the one is' and changes the perception of what is not actually changing. It is this aspect which has characterised this music throughout.

  • the method of Different Trains Mr. Reich's 1988 piece, Different Trains, marked a new compositional method, rooted in It's Gonna Rain and Come Out, in which speech recordings generate the musical material for musical instruments. The New York Times hailed Different Trains as "a work of such astonishing originality that breakthrough seems the only possible description....possesses an absolutely harrowing emotional impact." Mr. Reich has an exclusive recording contract with the Nonesuch label; in 1990 he received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition for Different Trains as recorded by the Kronos Quartet on Nonesuch.

  • brief bio : Steve Reich was born in New York in 1936. He studied drumming when he was 14 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra timpanist; later he took a degree in philosophy at Cornell (1953-7) and studied composition at the Juilliard School (1958-61) and at Mills College (1962-3) with Milhaud and Berio, also becoming interested in Balinese and African music. In 1966 he began performing with his own ensemble, chiefly of percussionists, developing a music of gradually changing ostinato pattems that move out of phase, creating an effect of shimmering surfaces; this culminated in Drumming (1971), a 90-minute elaboration of a single rhythmic cell. From circa 1972 he added harmonic change to his music, and later (Tehillim, 1981) melody. He has also worked with larger orchestral and choral forces (The Desert Music, 1983). Different Trains (1988), for string quartet and tape, won a Grammy for the best new composition.

It's hard to talk about the pioneering composer Steve Reich without considering the many artists he has influenced rockers like David Bowie and Sufjan Stevens, electronic musicians from Brian Eno to DJ Spooky, visual artists like Bruce Nauman, and choreographers such as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Akram Khan. Such is Reich's sweeping influence that three of New York’s major cultural centers are joining forces this fall to celebrate his 70th birthday (October 3, 2006): the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In addition, Nonesuch Records is releasing a 5-CD compilation and Reich’s own ensemble will be giving the New York premiere of "Daniel Variations" for voices and ensemble at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 21 Along with the above activities, Reich is a guest on

Like Philip Glass, John Adams, and Terry Riley, Steve Reich belongs to a group of composers known as "minimalists," who write music based largely on patterns of repetition. Minimalism came into prominence when many American composers tired of what they considered the over-rigorous, emotionally bankrupt style of music that was held up as an example when they were students. As a descriptive label, "minimalism" can be ineffectualsince each minimalist composer has his own distinct voicebut the movement has become a prominent and important musical style.

Different Trains (1988). Steve Reich /hey, interesting american music!/
Metafilter has a post about interesting American music . One of the links is a set of Pulitzer Foundation concert streams e.g. Steve Reich's Different Trains . Of course, since this work makes heavy use of pre-recorded sounds, it's hard to distinguish this performance from the original Kronos Quartet recording. Wikipedia In Different Trains, after each melody in the piece is introduced, usually by a single instrument, a recording of the spoken phrase from which the melody derives is played. The melody is then developed for a while, with the instruments playing along with the recording of the phrase or part of the phrase. In addition to speech, the piece calls for recordings of train sirens LIstening to this for the first time in a while, I'm surpised how much the sirens add to the piece, even the eerie European ones.

Steve Reich Mini-Festival
Boston's New England Conservatory Hosts Contemporary Composer
Sarah Canice Funke Dec 1, 2007
The New England Conservatory hosted a mini-festival in Steve Reich's honor, attended by the composer himself and featuring the Boston premiere of the Daniel Variations.
Those who dropped by the New England Conservatory November 28-29, 2007, had the chance to enjoy several works by Steve Reich. Even more exciting was that the baseball-cap-sporting composer himself attended the mini-festival, and audiences were treated to the rare experience (in classical music) of applauding the man who wrote the music. Each day was divided into two concert sets: First, a shorter concert was held at 5pm in the NEC's smaller, more intimate Brown Hall. The second, slightly longer concert took place at 8pm in the impressively gilded Jordan Hall.

Composer Steve Reich Discusses His Work
Steve Reich, a pioneer in tape music and American minimalism, has established himself as one of the "first generation" composers of our time. Jeffrey Brown interviews Reich about his work.
JEFFREY BROWN: Steve Reich calls it "Clapping Music," a piece he composed in 1972 and performed earlier this year at a concert with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Two musicians clap out a pattern of beats, first together, then slipping out of sync, before weaving back toward one another. It's a kind of trick of the ear, making something simple and unexpected sound complex and musical. With such spare early experiments with rhythmic patterns to highly orchestrated works this is his newest, called "Daniel Variations," written in honor of slain reporter Daniel Pearl Steve Reich has been one of music's most innovative forces.

[Index] A subtext for deepening confusions: Steve Reich at 70 By Norman Lebrecht / August 9, 2006 S teve Reich is preoccupied with contemporary torments. For the past year he has been writing a set of variations in memory of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who, in October 2002, was kidnapped and butchered in Pakistan while researching links between its intelligence services and al-Qaeda. Pearl was an enthusiastic violinist and his parents have created a foundation in his memory to promote inter-faith tolerance, and new music. Elton John, Ravi Shankar and Barbra Streisand are among its patrons. Steve Reich was enlisted to add his particular gloss of wisdom and consolation. 'I thought automatically of the Book of Daniel,' he says, 'of exile and cruelty, and mercy and compassion. And then I saw the terrible video put out by his captors, where his opening words are “my name is Daniel Pearl”. Such a magical name.'
