Executive summary: Minimalist composer, Different Trains After high school Reich continued his music studies at Cornell University, but chose to pursue his degree in philosophy rather than music, concentrating in particular on the ideas of Ludwig Wittgenstein . After completing his work at Cornell, his focus was once again returned to music: the next two years were spent in private study with composer Hall Overton, after which Reich enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music (where Overton was a faculty member) and continued his education under the guidance of William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti. A master's degree in music was then earned at Mills College in California, where he worked with modern composers Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud and developed an interest in Asian and African musical forms.

American composer. Along with Terry Riley and Philip Glass, a pioneer in the minimalist style.

Steve Reich began his career as a percussionist, and his music is marked by an almost overriding interest in rhythm. He studied philosophy at Cornell before beginning studies in composition, first at Juilliard and then at Mills College in California. It was there, studying with Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud, that he was introduced to the music of Bali and of Africa. Both of these had a decisive influence on his musical development. In 1971 he traveled to Africa to study drumming with the master drummers of Ghana's Ewe tribe.
Reich's first works were almost exclusively for percussion, and in them he used both the rhythmic energy and repetitive patterns he found in African music and the concept of gradual change that marks Balinese music. The result was a music in which repeating rhythmic ideas slowly go out of phase with each other, creating gradual change and increasing complexity. The basic idea of this can be seen in one of his simplest pieces, Pendulum Music (a piece you could easily perform on your own). Here, two microphones are suspended above upturned speakers and then set into motion. As each swings over the center of the speaker, it creates feedback. Since the differing lengths of the microphone wire create a different period of swing, the two sounds keep changing their relationship to each other. And as the force of gravity works on them, they both head toward a "steady state" of feedback. The process of that change is the basis of the piece, and the sound (changing with each performance) is the result of the process. Reich utilizes this process of gradual change with live performers, as well as by means of tape manipulations (such as making two tape loops of the same sound, but of slightly different lengths).

Reich was living in San Francisco and often went to Jazz Workshop several times a week to catch the mesmerizing saxophonist, who, it can be said without hyperbole, was playing jazz no one had even imagined and doing so with a single-minded concentration and overwhelming energy that was a spiritual as well as musical statement long before he began adopting specifically religious titles for his compositions. Then back across the bay to the tone-rows, which Reich found increasingly frustrating. On viewing Reich's ostensibly twelve-tone string orchestra piece, Berio went so far as to suggest to his student that if he wanted to write tonal music, he should write tonal music. This may have been his most valuable influence on he young composer, along with providing world-class examples of the kind of music Reich became progressively convinced he did not want to write. In early 1965 Reich also used the ending of Stephan Foster's "Massa's in De Cold Cold Ground" and set a fragment of his "Oh Dem Watermelons" in five-part canon as part of the Mime Troupe's "minstrel show," presented as in illustration of the racial stereotypes implicit in both the original music and the original minstrel shows. Reich's "Oh Dem Watermelons" canon accompanied the projection, in the middle of the minstrel show, of a quick-cut film of the same name by Robert Nelson, featuring watermelons flying into Superman's arms, being smashed, being caressed by a naked woman, etc. It was the middle of the 1960s.

    REICH, STEVE BIOGRAPHY
    (b 1936 )
The experimental American composer Steve Reich studied the work of the philsopher Wittgenstein at Cornell University, subsequently studying composition with Milhaud and with Berio. He showed an early interest in electro-acoustic music, then in the music of Africa. His music has experimented particularly with the multiple use of the same instrument and forms of exact but not simultaneous repetition. Instrumental Music Steve Reich's instrumental music includes Variations for wind, strings and keyboard, Music for 18 Musicians and a number of works that make use of unusual combinations of instruments, often a variety of percussion instruments, with recorded tape.

James Wierzbicki / writings Steve Reich survey of works to 1986 SINCE HE BECAME music director of the St. Louis Symphony in 1979, Leonard Slatkin has made a point of playing new music on the orchestra's visits to New York - usually something fresh from a first performance in St. Louis. Last year's New York City programs were an exception, for Slatkin used those concerts to fine-tune standard works the orchestra was about to take on its European tour. This year, as if to make up for its conservatism in 1985, the Symphony will play two new works in Carnegie Hall. Both are by major American composers and are sure to attract the attention of important East Coast critics. The April 12 New York concert will open with Joseph Schwantner's ''A Sudden Rainbow,'' an 18-minute tone-poem composed in Schwantner's third year as composer-in-residence here, and unveiled in Powell Hall Jan. 31. The April 11 concert will begin with Steve Reich's ''Three Movements for Orchestra.'' Reich's 20-minute score was completed only nine days ago and will have its first performance Thursday evening in St. Louis, at the Symphony's subscription concert. THE REICH PIECE is of unusual importance in being a ''Minimalist'' composer's first major work specifically for large orchestra.

    Steve Reich
    Biography
Stephen Michael Reich (born October 3, 1936) is an American composer. He is a pioneer of minimalism, although his music has increasingly deviated from a purely minimalist style. Reich's innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns (examples are his early compositions, It's Gonna Rain and Come Out), and the use of simple, audible processes to explore musical concepts (for instance, Pendulum Music and Four Organs). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm and canons, have significantly influenced contemporary music, especially in America. The Guardian has described Reich as one of the few composers to have "altered the direction of musical history." On January 25, 2007, Reich was named the 2007 recipient of the prestigious Polar Music Prize, together with Sonny Rollins.

ARCHIVE Steve Reich CITY LIFE Theatre of Voices with members of the Steve Reich Ensemble Paul Hillier, conductor (Elektra Nonesuch) composer Steve Reich first became acquainted with minimalism a repetitive musical aesthetic in which change occurs very slowly in the early '60s, when he met La Monte Young and Terry Riley. It was Young and Riley who inspired the series of tape-loop pieces Reich recorded in the late '60s, soon followed by such minimalist classics as "Drumming" (1971) and "Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Electronic Organ" (1973), as well as a string of symphonic pieces in the 1980s. With his latest recording, "City Life," Steve Reich establishes his credentials as a leading composer of our time. The three works on the disc "Proverb," "Nagoya Marimbas" and the title work embody both the old and the new of Reich's music. With "Proverb," an erstwhile collaboration with Michael Tilson Thomas appears to have been replaced by a new partnership with Paul Hillier, who conducted the premiere performances of "The Cave" last year. Hillier formerly vocalist par excellence of the Hilliard Ensemble persuaded Reich to put together a new piece for voice and percussion. Scored for three sopranos, two tenors, two vibraphones and two electric organs, "Proverb" is a spectacular piece, devoid of the pedantry of some of Reich's earlier vocal music, which sometimes relied too heavily on sampling. The text of the work, "How small a thought it takes to fill a whole life," is a not only an appropriate metaphor for the piece, but for Reich's entire career. "Proverb" is Reich's own take on medieval French counterpoint. He begins the piece with a simple declamatory theme sung by the sopranos and then reworks it, giving it the sort of gloss we are used to hearing in such works as the finale of the "Four Sections, New York Counterpoint" and "Six Pianos." "Proverb" builds on the tradition of these pieces with a sort of mercurial elegance and brevity that suggest a refined restraint.
