From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Stephen Michael Reich (born October 3 ) is an American composer . He is a pioneer of minimalism , although his music has increasingly deviated from a purely minimalist style. Reich's innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns (examples are his early compositions, It's Gonna Rain and Come Out ), and the use of simple, audible processes to explore musical concepts (for instance, Pendulum Music and Four Organs ). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures, slow harmonic rhythm and canons, have significantly influenced contemporary music , especially in America. The Guardian has described Reich as one of the few composers to have "altered the direction of musical history." On January 25 , Reich was named the 2007 recipient of the prestigious Polar Music Prize , together with Sonny Rollins

Steve Reich Biography Steve Reich has been recognized internationally as one of the world's foremost living composers. From his early taped speech works It's Gonna Rain (1965) and Come Out (1966) to The Cave (1993) his collaboration with the video artist Beryl Korot, Mr. Reich's path has embraced not only aspects of Western classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. Mr. Reich's work has been hailed by the Washington Post as "absolutely spellbinding....so original in impulse and form that it challenges all past assumptions about the goals of the art....intensely visceral and frequently almost hallucinogenic in impact." Born in New York (1936), and raised there and in California, Mr. Reich graduated with honors in Philosophy from Cornell University in 1957. For the next two years, he studied composition with Hall Overton, and from 1958 to 1961 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music with William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti. Mr. Reich received his M.A. in Music from Mills College in 1963, where he worked with Darius Milhaud and Luciano Berio. During the summer of 1970, with the help of a grant from the Institute for International Education, Mr. Reich studied drumming at the Institute for African Studies at the University of Ghana in Accra. In 1973 and 1974 he studied Balinese Semar Pegulingan and Gamelan Gambang at the American Society for Eastern Arts in Seattle and Berkeley, California. From 1976 to 1977 he studied the traditional forms of cantillation (chanting) of the Hebrew scriptures in New York and Jerusalem. In 1966 Steve Reich founded his own ensemble of three musicians, which rapidly grew to eighteen members or more. Since 1971, Steve Reich and Musicians have frequently toured the world, and have the distinction of performing to sold-out houses at venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall and the Bottom Line cabaret.

artists (S) Real Name: Stephen Michael Reich Profile: Steve Reich (October 3, 1936, New-York City, USA) is a composer. He studied composition privately with Hall Overton, then moved on to Juilliard School in New-York to study with William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti (1958 to 1961). Subsequently he attended Mills College in Oakland where he was taught by Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud (1961-63) and earned a master's degree in composition.
Early on, Reich was influenced by fellow minimalist Terry Riley's loosely-structured aleatoric works which combines simple musical patterns, offset in time, to create a slowly-shifting, cohesive whole. Reich adopted this approach to compose his first major work written in 1965: It's Gonna Rain... Reich moved on from the "phase shifting" technique he had pioneered to more elaborate pieces. He investigated other musical processes such as augmentation (the temporal lengthening of phrases and melodic fragments).

Steve Reich
When i was a freshman in high school, before I knew anything about Music Theory, when I couldn't tell the difference between Bach and Stravinsky, when I was still caught up in the 80s pop rock trend of Def Leppard, Duran Duran, and Paula Abdul, one of my friends played for me the last movement of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint , and I thought it was one of the most incredible things I had ever heard. All of Reich's music has certain signature characteristics that affect me in many ways. His rich harmonies and their gradual unfolding give me a sense of calm, or maybe a feeling of slowly becoming awake. His use of rhythmic pulsation sometimes creates in me a push or a moving forward, and sometimes gives me the feeling of serenity, like the crashing of waves. His use of rhythmic complexity drives me and grooves me. His process of gradual shifting, beit melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, or textural, fascinates me and challenges my ears and my mind, which tries to figure out exactly what I'm hearing and if it's really important. Sometimes Reich's music is able to do all of these things at once. That type of feeling is impossible to describe.

Piano Phase - After Steve Reich
Steve Reich's "Piano Phase" piece requires two parts to run a different tempi. This is achieved in this example by reducing the note lengths of one part slightly to simulate the difference in tempo. As the 3 beat phrase is repeated over and over the slight tempo difference results in a 'phasing' offset between the parts. This continues until they meet up again some time later one beat apart. The last few bars of this example have the parts in sync again but at a one beat displacement. In Reich's score this process continues through all beats of the phrase. To hear the result play the MIDI file Here is the source code. The first technique we will investigate is writing for a single part containing multiple lines/voices. Take a good look at it as it contains many things that you will not have seen before.

Steve Reich
(b. 1936)
Steve Reich, as an early pioneer in tape music and American minimalism, has established himself as one of the foremost composers of our time. Following studies in philosophy at Cornell University (1953-7), Reich turned to composition, first with Vincent Persichetti at Julliard (1958-61), then with Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud at Mills College (1962-3). His music is characterized by a strong, steady pulse and strictly diatonic and tonal harmonies. He is typically grouped together with other "first generation" minimalist composers such as Philip Glass and La Monte Young, and more recently with younger composers such as John Adams . The music is deeply "American" in its roots, with an unrelenting pulse and short, repeating melodic figures often compared to rock-and-roll and be-bop. However, like other minimalist composers, Reich's music is also largely influenced by extra-European forms and techniques, generally viewed as a response to the largely academic, elitist climate of new music in the 1950's and 60's.

Introduction (born New York, 3 October 1936). He studied drumming when he was 14 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra timpanist; later he took a degree in philosophy at Cornell (1953-7) and studied composition at the Juilliard School (1958-61) and at Mills College (1962-3) with Milhaud and Berio, also becoming interested in Balinese and African music. In 1966 he began performing with his own ensemble, chiefly of percussionists, developing a music of gradually changing ostinato pattems that move out of phase, creating an effect of shimmering surfaces; this culminated in Drumming (1971), a 90-minute elaboration of a single rhythmic cell. From circa 1972 he added harmonic change to his music, and later ( Tehillim , 1981) melody. He has also worked with larger orchestral and choral forces ( The Desert Music Different Trains (1988), for string quartet and tape, won a Grammy for the best new composition. Interview: Steve Reich
For a lot of people, Steve Reich constitutes the sole classical component of otherwise vast music collections. Yet for many classical music fans, the New York composer constitutes an outré counterpoint to the canon. But any way you approach him, Reich remains an American icon and iconoclast, for his early tape work with "Come Out" and "It's Gonna Rain" though subsequent and increasingly elaborate compositions such as "Drumming", "Music for 18 Musicians", "Different Trains", and an ever-expanding repertoire that reflects Reich's restless spirit. Having just turned 70, Reich currently finds himself the subject of several international performance retrospectives celebrating his work some even premiering new compositions. But to Reich it's just another birthday, and while he's honored, his sharp mind finds itself in several places (and time zones, and projects) at once. We spoke with Reich about his 40-year career, the tidy new "Phases" collection, where he's been, and what he's off to next. Pitchfork: Turning a nice, round age like 70 has led people to invoke words like "canon" and "legacy." Are you comfortable with those terms?

"Systems Music" is a term which has been used to describe the work of composers who concern themselves with sound continuums which evolve gradually, often over very long periods of time. The most well-known of these composers are Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and La Monte Young. The most striking feature of their work is repetitiveness or stasis. Their works contain little or no variation of pitch, tempo, dynamics or timbre. Certainly, their work exhibits virtually none of the characteristic concerns of traditional Western music, such as harmonic movement, key modulation or thematic development. Four Organs where a single chord is gradually stretched out to a duration of several minutes. Systems composers appear to have worked largely outside the mainstreams of both European and American music, drawing inspiration instead from various ethnic musical forms - Ghanian and Balinese music in Reich's case, Japanese Gagaku in the case of Young. Many other influences can be discerned. Such non-Western musical forms, as Young has observed , involve stasis in contrast to climax or directionality. But systems music also relates to some aspects of contemporary Western music. Young has cited the "unchanging chord" in Schoenberg's

Steve Reich:
Early tape pieces

photo by Betty Freeman Interview by Jason Gross
(April 2000) As I was doing research for OHM- THE EARLY GURUS OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC (Ellipsis Arts), I had the pleasure of interviewing many of the composers that were being included in this compilation. While we had chosen "Pendulum Music" to use and were able to get comments from Reich about the piece, he was also generous enough to talk about his early tape pieces also. Though these historic works were not also included in the release, I thought this material was important enough to share with the online world. Thanks to Lee Ranaldo, who pushed me forward to do this. PSF: Where there any earlier tape pieces you heard that influenced your own early works with tapes? Basically, "It's Gonna Rain" was done in '65. At that point, I already studied with (Luciano) Berio. I had listened to a lot electronic music and a lot of musique concrete. I felt that my heart belonged to the musique concrete people. Even with Stockhausen, I was interested in "Gesung der Jungling" because of the boy's voice. The bone I had to pick with (Pierre) Schaeffer and that bunch was that if they were using the sound of a car crash, they had to lower it by an octave or speed it up by an octave, run it through a ring modulator or play it backwards. Why not hear that it's a car crash! These sounds that you're using in the original state have some kind of emotional resonance. We relate to them in various ways. If you bring them into the music, that brings in an emotional, theatrical meaning which is useful. It's worthwhile maintaining and building upon.
