Max Reger
The German master Max Reger died at the age of only 43, but he wrote a vast quantity of music - often in large forms, and with opus numbers that encompassed groups of works, not just single compositions. His musical mind was that of a genius: being able to write music in almost any circumstances, and music that was often of great contrapuntal complexity. He was a composer at variance with the Romantic movements; his output, like Brahms's, was exclusively for the concert hall, the recital room, and - more importantly, in Reger's case - the church, for he was a magnificent organist who wrote a large amount of music for the instrument. In this regard, his spiritual predecessor was Johann Sebastian Bach, whose music Reger revered above all other. At Max Reger's sudden death - about which there has always been some speculation - he left well over 200 works catalogued, with a large number of uncatalogued original compositions and 'arrangements'.

Died: May 11, 1916 - Leipzig , Germany The celebrated German composer Reger (Johann Baptist Joseph) Max(imilian) Reger, was the son of a school-teacher and amateur musician, who gave him instruction on the piano organ, and various string instruments. In 1874 the family moved to Weiden, where he studied organ and theory with Adalbert Lindner. He then attended the teacher-training college; after visiting the Bayreuth Festival in 1888, he decided on a career in music. He went to Sondershausen to study with Riemann in 1890, and continued as his pupil in Wiesbaden (1890-1893).
for Piano, op. 81 (1904), and the Sinfonietta, op. 90 (1904-1905). He went to Leipzig as music director of the University (1907-1908) and as professor of composition at the Conservatory (from 1907).
Max Reger's fame as a composer was enhanced by his successful tours as a soloist and conductor in Germany and throughout Europe. While he continued to produce major chamber works and organ pieces, he also wrote such important orchestral compositions as the , op. 100 (1907), the Violin Concerto, op. 101 (1907-1908), the

In 1901 he settled in Munich , where he taught organ and composition, and from 1907 he worked in Leipzig , where he was music director of the university until 1908 and professor of composition at the conservatoire until his death. Among his students there were Joseph Haas and George Szell . From 1911 he conducted the court orchestra at Meiningen until it was disbanded in 1914, when he moved to Jena . He died of a heart attack Reger was a very prolific composer, although few of his compositions are well known today. Many of his works are fugues or in variation form , including what is probably his best known orchestral work, the Variations and Fugue on a theme of Mozart (based on the opening theme of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 's Piano Sonata, K. 331 ). He also wrote a large amount of music for organ , including the Fantasy and Fugue on BACH (based on the BACH motif ), and music in virtually every other genre (

Reger enjoys a particularly high reputation among organists, to whose repertoire he made important additions. Born in Bavaria in 1873, he was a pupil of the important theorist Hugo Riemann and taught at the University of Leipzig, before his appointment as conductor of the Meiningen Court Orchestra in 1911. In addition to his activities as a teacher, conductor and composer, he was also a pianist and organist. Max Reger Works
Among a variety of orchestral works, including a piano concerto and a violin concerto, Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart , an arrangement of his work of the same title for two pianos, is typical of his resourceful and sometimes complex use of the theme on which it is based. Reger wrote a considerable amount of chamber music of all kinds, with a number of violin sonatas and other duo sonatas, as well as string quartets and works for other groups of players. While of interest, nothing of this has become a part of popular repertoire, either for players or audiences.

30. Max Reger
Brief biography of max reger by Carol Traxler for the August 1999 issue of Quarternotes, the newsletter of the Washington Saengerbund.
http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/1945/WSB/reger.html
Max Reger
Singers in the Washington Sängerbund will have seen the name Max Reger as arranger on choral music, including several interesting pieces in our Fall 1999 repertoire, such as Die Wüzburger Glöcki and Untreue (In einem kühlen Grunde) . Max Reger's musical output spanned several genres, including choral works, but he is recognized and appreciated particularly as a composer of organ music. In order to help us understand some of the influences on this German composer, let's have a brief look at the times into which he was born. A decade before his birth Wagner's Tannhäuser had been performed in Paris and Liszt had written Mephisto Waltz No. 1 (1861). Between 1865 and 1885 the world was exposed to Carroll's Alice in Wonderland , Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment , Darwin's The Descent of Man , and Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn . In 1871 Bismarck was chancellor of Germany. In 1874 the music world could hear Verdi's Requiem , Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition , and Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus Reger, the son of a school teacher, was born in Brand, Germany on March 19, 1873. He began musical studies at a young age and by the age of fifteen was already composing in earnest. He was expected to become a school teacher like his father. However, before he took his first teaching job, he met the eminent musicologist Hugo Riemann, who was so impressed by Reger's talent that he urged him to devote himself entirely to music. Reger enrolled at the Sonderhausen Conservatory where he studied under Riemann; he then followed his teacher to Wiesbaden (where it is said his drinking habits began). After holding some minor posts, he became Music Director of the Leipzig University (1907) and Professor of composition at the Leipzig Conservatory - a post he retained to the end of his short life.

Max Reger Geboren wurde Max Reger am 19.03.1873 in Brand im Fichtelgebirge. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er in Weiden i. d. OPf..
