His piano music chamber music vocal music and orchestral music have become staples of the concert repertoire Ravel's piano compositions, such as Jeux d'eau Miroirs and Gaspard de la Nuit , demand considerable virtuosity from the performer, and his orchestral music , including Daphnis et Chlo© and his arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky 's Pictures at an Exhibition , uses tonal color and variety of sound and instrumentation very effectively. To the general public, Ravel is probably best known for his orchestral work, Bol©ro , which he considered trivial and once described as "a piece for orchestra without music." According to SACEM , Ravel's estate earns more royalties than that of any other French musician. Most of Ravel's works will not enter the public domain until 2015.

French composer. Ravel is ranked with Debussy as one of the most influential composers at the turn of the twentieth century.
Maurice Ravel is often linked with his countryman Claude Debussy, and there are some important similarities in their music. Both used the rich harmonies and new scales that are usually associated with musical impressionism, and both had an interest in the exotic. But where Debussy was a sensualist, influenced by the symbolist and decadent movements, Ravel was more of a craftsman and traditionalist, creating a style that was almost neoclassical.
Pictures at an Exhibition . He also was drawn to the music of other cultures. While he showed some interest in musical Orientalism (his Sheherazade being a fine example), his real love was the music of Spain, and he created a number of works ( Rapsodie espagnole and being the best known) that have a distinctly Spanish flavor.
In the 1910s and 1920s, Ravel was influenced by the presence in Paris of the Russian Igor Stravinsky, and the activities of the Ballets Russes . His music took on a sharper edge and, along with Stravinsky, returned to older principles. That resulted in what is often referred to as a neoclassical style. After World War I, Ravel traveled extensively as a conductor. He was especially appreciated in the United States, and during his visits to this country he was exposed to American jazz. This too found its way into some of his later pieces, most notably the slow movement of his sonata for violin, which incorporates elements of blues style.

MAURICE RAVEL MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937) Born on March 7, 1875 in Ciboure, France, Maurice Ravel started his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of seven; when he turned fourteen, he enrolled in the Paris Conservatoire. His first works, MENUET ANTIQUE (1895) and LES SITES AURICULAIRES (1898), both for piano, received only minimal recognition; the composer's first published composition was JEUX D'EAU (WATER GAMES) (1901).
In 1903, he finished a song cycle, SHEHERAZADE, followed by his STRING QUARTET IN F (1904). Strongly influenced by fellow French composer Claude Debussy as well as Liszt, Mussorgsky, and Faure, his concern for precise, rhythmically balanced musical patterns was already apparent at this point in his career. Further works would continue to reflect and refine this.
Ravel left the Paris Conservatoire in 1905, following sixteen years of study, and composed a tremendous amount of music before the beginning of World War I. His output included SONATINE and five MIROIRS, both in 1905, INTRODUCTION AND ALLEGRO for harp, flute, clarinet, and string quartet (1906), a one-act comic opera

That was that in these days of cacophony it might be quite an original idea for the orchestra to start, say, in C major, and then, through a series of discords the instruments should divide, some going up a semitone at every three or four bars, while others went down in the same way, eventually ending in perfect harmony in C major two octaves apart.
