More recently she wrote a Violin Concerto (2003) for the Israeli violinist Ittai Shapira Ran studied with Ralph Shapey and dedicated her Symphony to him. Many critics have commented on the combination of raw power and classical structure in Ran's work. Ran has written that she considers classical-era composer Ludwig van Beethoven her "compositional idol," and her work combines a taste for rigorous structural logic with a unique brand of "free atonality

Shulamit Ran Born 21 October 1949, Tel Aviv. Educated in Israel, her prodigious gifts were recognized by her piano teacher and family friends who took her to play the piano for Pablo Casals and Arthur Rubinstein. In 1963, she moved with her mother to New York to study piano and composition at the Mannes College of Music. Launched into a strenuous career as concert pianist by an appearance on one of Leonard Bernstein's Young People's concerts, she nevertheless continued to develop a strong compositional voice. She premiered her 1971 Concert Piece for piano and orchestra with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. A recording of O the Chimneys (1939), a setting of Holocaust poetry by Nelly Sachs, attracted the attention of the American composer and University of Chicago professor Ralph Shapey. From 1973, then, she has been professor of composition at the University of Chicago. Ran has won all the prestigious composers' awards, including election to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters (1989) and the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for her First Symphony. Shulamit Ran, composer
Shulamit Ran has never forgotten that a vital essence of composition is communication." So ran the review in the Chicago Tribune following the premiere of Legends by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This sort of reaction is by no means unusual. Around the country, from Seattle to Baltimore to Houston, commentary on her music typically runs thus: "gloriously human," and "compelling not only for its white-hot emotional content but for its intelligence and compositional clarity," "Ran is a magnificent composer." It is hardly surprising, then, that Symphony , which has drawn references to "the superior quality of her musical imagination and artistic invention" and "a work that will reward each new listening" should have won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Shulamit Ran, born in Tel Aviv, Israel, where she received her early training, came to the U.S. at the age of fourteen to study, having received scholarships from The Mannes College of Music in New York and the America Israel Cultural Foundation. Her composition teachers in Israel and in the U.S. have included A.U. Boskovich, Paul Ben-Haim, Norman Dello Joio and Ralph Shapey. Her principal piano teachers were Nadia Reisenberg and Dorothy Taubman.
Among her numerous awards, fellowships and commissions are those from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund, the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fromm Music Foundation, WFMT, Chamber Music America, Eastman School of Music, the American Composers Orchestra (

http://contempo.uchicago.edu/ran.html
Shulamit Ran, a native of Israel, began setting Hebrew poetry to music at the age of seven. By nine she was studying composition and piano with some of Israel's most noted musicians, including composers Alexander Boskovich and Paul Ben-Haim, and within a few years she was having her works performed by professional musicians and orchestras. As the recipient of scholarships from both the Mannes College of Music in New York and the America Israel Cultural Foundationan, Ran continued her composition studies in the United States with Norman Dello-Joio. In 1973 she joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, where she is now the Andrew MacLeish Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Music. She lists her late colleague and friend Ralph Shapey, with whom she also studied in 1977, as an important mentor. Ran has been awarded most major honors given to composers in the United States, and her numerous prizes, fellowships and commissions include those from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund, the Ford Foundation, three commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts, two fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fromm Music Foundation, WFMT, Chamber Music America, the Eastman School of Music, the American Composers Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Baltimore Symphony, the National Flute Association, the Brentano String Quartet and the Koussevitzky Music Foundation. Digital Collections Home Browse Search Contact Ran, Shulamit: Concerto da Camera II, Analysis of Pitch and Formal Structure Creator (Author): Lin, Sheng Publisher Name: University of North Texas Place of Publication: Denton, Texas Original Creation Date: Description: The thesis speculates upon the three movements of Concerto da Camera II (1987), scored for Bb clarinet, string quartet and piano) in these four aspects: 1) the formal structure, 2) the manipulation of the notes of whole-tone, octatonic, and chromatic scales in octave displacement, 3) the potential combination of subsets that present different levels of pitch transformation in melodic and harmonic structure, and 4) the usage of intervals of minor seconds, tritones, and perfect fourths or fifths which dominates the linear writing. All of these features demonstrate that the music has strong structural elements in form, motives, and sonorities, which unify the piece in an aurally coherent style as an organic whole. This study should provide more insight into the understanding of Ran's unique compositional technique and style. Language: English Subject(s): (LCSH) Ran, Shulamit, 1949- Concerto da camera, no. 2
