Introduction (born Semyonovo, 1 April 1873; died Beverley Hills, 28 March 1943). He studied at the Moscow Conservatory (1885-92) under Zverev (where Skryabin was a fellow pupil) and his cousin Ziloti for piano and Taneyev and Arensky for composition, graduating with distinction as both pianist and composer (the opera Aleko , given at the Bol'shoy in 1893, was his diploma piece). During the ensuing years he composed piano pieces (including his famous c-sharp Minor Prelude), songs and orchestral works, but the disastrous premiere in 1897 of his Symphony no.1, poorly conducted by Glazunov, brought about a creative despair that was not dispelled until he sought medical help in 1900: then he quickly composed his Second Piano Concerto. Meanwhile he had set out on a new career as a conductor, appearing in Moscow and London; he later was conductor at the Bol'shoy, 1904-6. By this stage, and most particularly in the Piano Concerto no.2, the essentials of his art had been assembled: the command of the emotional gesture conceived as lyrical melody extended from small motifs, the concealrnent behind this of subtleties in orchestration and structure, the broad sweep of his lines and forms, the predominant melancholy and nostalgia, the loyalty to the finer Russian Romanticism inherited from

RACHMANINOV, SERGEI BIOGRAPHY
After study at the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories, Sergey Rachmaninov embarked on a career in Russia as a composer, pianist and conductor. Exile from his own country after the Communist Revolution of 1917 forced an increased concentration on performance, as one of the most distinguished pianists of the day, activity that enabled him to support his family but left less time for his work as a composer. For practical reasons he eventually based himself in the United States, while keeping a villa in Switzerland. He died in Beverly Hills in 1943. Orchestral Music The second of Rachmaninov's four piano concertos holds an unchallenged position among romantic works in this form, its popularity closely rivalled by the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, for piano and orchestra. While the Symphonic Dances of 1940 enjoy some popularity, as well as the symphonic poem The Rock and the dark-hued Isle of the Dead, with its recurrent motif from the Latin Requiem Mass, the second of his three numbered symphonies is still more familiar. Piano Music Rachmaninov's Prelude in C sharp minor won early popularity that largely outweighed its merits. Other piano works include the Etudes-tableaux of 1911 and 1916-17, two sonatas, sets of Preludes and Moments musicaux, transcriptions, including the two Kreisler pieces Liebesleid and Liebesfreud, and the impressive Variations on a Theme of Corelli, his last original composition for solo piano, composed in 1931 and based on the popular

Born in Semyonovo, near Novgorod into a wealthy family with a strong military background, Rachmaninoff had his first piano lessons with his mother at the family estate at Oneg. After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninoff studied at the conservatory, before going on to Moscow, where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti (a student of Franz Liszt and Rachmaninoff's cousin). He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev. While still a student he wrote this one act opera Aleko, and the set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the Prelude in C sharp minor, probably Rachmaninoff's most popular piece for solo piano.
Rachmaninoff's first symphony was premiered in 1897, but was a complete flop with the critics. Some have suggested that this was as much due to the conducting of Alexander Glazunov, who may have been drunk, as it was to Rachmaninoff. The bad reception led to a nervous breakdown and complete loss of self-confidence for Rachmaninoff. He wrote very little music until he began a course of therapy with Nikolai Dahl. The result of these sessions was the Piano Concerto No. 2, which Rachmaninoff dedicated to Dahl. The piece was very well received at its premiere, for which Rachmaninoff played the solo part himself, and remains one of his most popular compositions, gaining some fame from its use in the film Brief Encounter.

Sergei Rachmaninov's music is so lushly sensual that even the middlebrow Tom Ewell played it in a vain attempt to seduce Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch . While "Chopsticks" turned out to float Miss Monroe's beautiful boat, the rest of us can sink into the plush splendor of Rachmaninov's musical world. A disciple of Tchaikovsky, he was one of the 20th Century's few great composers who stayed true to classical ideals rather than expanding the form. His most famous works, like the exquisite "Vocalise" for example, sound far removed from the avant-garde world of Stravinsky. A brilliant pianist whose massive hands allowed for an expansive reach across the keys, many of Rachmaninov's pieces have become musical decathlons of technical prowess. This was illustrated to sweat-popping effect in the hit film Shine

It is tempting to explain Sergey Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov's lifelong outward stoicism, the icy demeanor he always exhibited when performing, as a protective mechanism acquired slowly and painfully in his youth, when one difficulty after another presented itself to a sensitive, naturally withdrawn young man who was nevertheless determined to make his way in the world as a musician. He had little help from his parents. His father squandered the famiIy fortune so quickly that Sergey was only nine years old when he saw the estate at Novgorod where they had lived, the last of their property, auctioned off to pay debts. The family moved to St. Petersburg and Rachmaninov continued his piano studies at the Conservatory. But soon, when a diphtheria epidemic swept the city, his sister Sofiya died. Not long after that his parents separated. Young Sergey reacted by failing all his final examinations at school (he was then twelve). As a consequence the promising pianist was shipped off to Moscow, where he would live and study with the strict disciplinarian Nikolay Zverev. Life with Zverev was no picnic: the day began at 6:00 a.m. and included a stiff regimen of communal practice, group and private instruction and attendance at various concerts in the city. In a while, Rachmaninov was able to transfer to the senior division of the Moscow Conservatory, taking more of his classes outside the Zverev household. But when, in order to compose without the constant distraction of his housemates' practice, he asked for a private room, Zverev obliged by kicking him out. They did not exchange words for three years.

Rachmaninov's early musical life was quite brilliant; he won the great gold medal of the Moscow Conservatoire (only the third recipient in the Conservatoire's history), and was greatly encouraged by Tchaikovsky, in whose memory Rachmaninov composed his large-scale Trio élégiaque opus 9. By the age of 23, Rachmaninov had written his First Symphony but the first performance in 1897, conducted by Glazunov, was a disaster. The result caused him to lose his self-confidence, so much so that for three years he wrote hardly anything of consequence, and his indifference to composition led his family to urge him to seek medical help. He consulted Dr Nikolai Dahl, a gifted amateur musician and a pioneer in psychotherapy, whose treatment over some months in 1900 effected a cure. Following this treatment, Rachmaninov holidayed with Feodor Chaliapin and his wife in the Crimea, and went with them to Italy, where the great bass was to appear; during these months, Rachmaninov's muse returned: he drafted a new Piano Concerto (his Second) and a Suite for Two Pianos (also his Second), both of which he completed on his return to Moscow. By December 17th, 1901, he had completed the score of his Cello Sonata, opus 19, his only chamber-music sonata and one of his largest and most important compositions in the genre. However, by then the work had been given, on December 2nd in Moscow, performed by Rachmaninov and his friend Anatoly Brandukov, to whom the Sonata is dedicated. The difference in dates is accounted for by the addition of the brilliant coda, which would appear to have been composed later, along with several other slight revisions - no doubt as a result of Rachmaninov having heard the work in performance.
