Music is enough for a lifetime,
but a lifetime is not enough for music Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, on a large estate near the ancient city of Novgorod, Russia. His father was an army officer and his mother was a wealthy heiress. His father gambled, drank, and squandered his wife's money. He deserted his family when Sergei was nine years old.
By all accounts Young Sergei was a problem child, but had an extraordinary talent at the piano. At age nine he entered the College of Music in St. Petersburg. Because of his natural gift, Sergei did not bother to study. To solve his discipline problem Rachmaninoff moved to Moscow to live with Nikolai Zvereff of the Moscow Conservatory . Zvereff was one of the leading music teachers in Russia at the time. In 1892, Rachmaninoff graduated from the conservatory with high honors.
In 1909, Rachmaninoff made his first visit to the United States, receiving an enthusiastic welcome. Afterwards, he visited America once every season. Rachmaninoff died on March 28, 1943, only a few weeks after attaining his American citizenship, and five days before his seventieth birthday. During his career Rachmaninoff wrote 145 compositions, including piano concertos and symphonies.

Most of Rachmaninoff's best-known compositions were written before 1917, the year he left Russia to settle first in Switzerland, and later in the United States. Sergei Rachmaninoff
Brilliant composer, talented pianist, and control-demanding conductor, Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on a family estate near Novgorod, Russia. His father and grandfather were already very good amateur pianists, thus Sergei followed in their footsteps, as he began piano lessons at a very young age. Although he was born with that musical exposure, he was expected to go on to military school for a career there. At the age of nine, Rachmaninoff traveled to St. Petersburg due to his father's ill judgement with money, as he lost the family fortune. There, Sergei entered as a scholarship student at the conservatory. However, Rachmaninoff was not a good student, as he often cut class and wandered about the grand city, sometimes even spending his time at the skating rink. His grandmother always took him to church services, where he admired the singing and the tolling of the bells. Even though he deeply enjoyed music, his teachers foresaw no such relation for him with music. Later, however, when he entered the Moscow conservatory at fifteen, he discovered new horizons when he added composition to his piano playing. At Moscow, Rachmaninoff lived at the home of his teacher, the great Nicolai Zverev, who supervised every detail of his students' lives. There, Rachmaninoff met and played for many giant figures of Russia, including Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky , who became his musical idol.

After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninoff studied at the conservatory , before going on to Moscow , where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti (a student of Franz Liszt and Rachmaninoff's cousin). He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev . While still a student he wrote a one act opera Aleko , and a set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the popular and famous Prelude in C sharp minor, a piece he came to detest through 40 years of audiences demanding it as an encore at his piano recitals. Already in his early years he showed great composing skills. His first serious pieces for the piano were composed and performed when he was thirteen years old during his stay as student at Zverev's. In 1892, at an age of 19, he completed his first piano concerto. The

    Sergey Rachmaninov
Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff , was a Russian-American composer, pianist, and conductor. ("Sergei Rachmaninoff" was the spelling the composer himself used while living in the West throughout the latter half of his life, including when he became a United States citizen. However, alternative transliterations of his name include Sergey or Serge, and Rachmaninov, Rachmaninow, Rakhmaninov or Rakhmaninoff.)
While his reputation as composer only came later in life, Rachmaninoff's skill as pianist was well-known and highly respected; he often performed his own works as soloist. He was one of the greatest pianists of his generation, having legendary technical facilities and rhythmic drive, and his large hands were able to cover a thirteenth interval on the piano. Many recordings were made by the Victor Talking Machine Company recording label of him performing his own music as well as works from the standard repertoire. Rachmaninoff made his first tour of the United States as a pianist in 1909, an event for which he composed the Piano Concerto No. 3 (Op. 30, 1909). This successful tour made him a popular figure in America, and he emigrated to New York following the Russian Revolution of 1917. After his departure his music was banned in the Soviet Union for several years. His compositional output slowed to some degree, partly because he was required to spend much of his time performing to support his family, but mainly because of homesickness; he felt that when he left Russia, it was as if he had left behind his inspiration. Nevertheless, his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, today one of his best-known works, was written in Switzerland in 1934.

    , by Rachmaninoff

Sergey Vassilyevich Rachmaninoff was born on April 1, 1873, into an aristocratic family in Novgorod, Russia. By the age of six, Sergey had begun piano lessons, with Anna Ornatskaya, of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. She noted a special talent in the young boy, and later recommended him for scholarship to the conservatory in 1881. His father, a former captain in the Imperial Guard, squandered nearly all of his wife's dowry, which included five estates, by 1882. The family was forced to move into a small apartment in St. Petersburg. A diphtheria epidemic was running rapid through the city, and Sergei, and two of his siblings became ill. His sister, Sophia was unable to overcome the illness, and eventually succumbed to it. His failures and the death of Sophia humiliated and he left his wife, leaving her to raise the remaining four children on her own. From 1883-1885, Sergey studied at the conservatory in St. Petersburg, but troubles within his family life, and his obsession with the piano, drew his attention away from his studies. The result, was failure in all of his exams. At the schools recommendation, his mother sent him to Moscow to study at the Moscow conservatory, to further explore and expand his musical talents. He lived and studied with Nikolai Zveref, one of the leading musical instructors in Russia. Sergey became more disciplined, and developed a more optimistic outlook on life. Sergey moved out and began studies with his cousin, after a dispute with Zveref. He studied in earnest, and in 1892, he graduated from the conservatory with high honors. A special commendation came directly from Tchaikovsky, on his thesis project, the opera
