Johann Joachim Quantz
  • Born January 30, 1697 in Oberscheden Died July 12, 1773 in Potsdam Period: Baroque (1600-1749) Country: Germany
Biography
One of the most significant figures in the early history of the transverse flute, composer and performer Johann Joachim Quantz as a youth had the capacity to master nearly any instrument. Only late in his development did he specialize in the flute, an instrument that would lead him to a highly paid and highly honored position with King Frederick the Great of Prussia. By age eight, Quantz was already playing double bass in village festivals. When he was 10, upon his blacksmith-father's death, he was apprenticed to his uncle, a town musician, and then his uncle's son-in-law. This apprenticeship led Quantz to proficiency on oboe, trumpet, and most string instruments. He spent some time in the Dresden town band, and in 1717 studied counterpoint in Vienna with Jan Dismas Zelenka . The following year he became oboist in the Polish chapel of Augustus II, King of Poland, spending time in both Warsaw and Dresden. But in 1719, realizing how few opportunities for promotion he faced as an oboist, Quantz took up the transverse flute.

QUANTZ, JOHANN JOACHIM BIOGRAPHY
Quantz was one of the first professional flute players in 18th-century Europe. He began as a town musician, trained to play all instruments, but after gaining a post as an oboist in the presitgious Dresden court ensemble, he began to specialise in the flute in 1719. he traveled to Italy, France, and England to broaden his musical education, then returned to Dresden. In 1741 he entered the service of Frederick the Great of Prussia, where he remained until his death, composing, performing, and making flutes for the king. His Essay on flute-playing (1752) made his famous throughout Europe and attracted pupils who formed a "school" of flute-playing which remained influential for another hundred years.

Flautist, flute maker and composer Finding little opportunity for advancement as an oboist, he took up the flute, studying for four months with P. G. Buffardin. Quantz traveled to Italy in 1724, to study counterpoint in Rome with Gasparini ; he also journeyed to Paris (1726-27), where he added a second key to his flutes to help with intonation (playing in tune), and to England in 1727, where he met Handel. Upon his return to Dresden he was made a member of the court Kapelle. From 1728 he instructed Prince Frederick on the flute, and moved to Berlin in 1741 after Frederick (the Great) became King of Prussia. He was the most famous and expert flautist of his day. In Berlin, Quantz was exempt from playing in the opera orchestra; instead, his duties revolved around the king's private evening concerts, where the repertoire (at least in later years) consisted primarily of works by Quantz and Frederick himself. His compositions include over 200 flute sonatas and 300 flute concertos, in addition to trio sonatas and some vocal music; few of his works were published after he moved to Berlin. He died in Potsdam.

After the death of his father, a blacksmith, Quantz began his musical training under his uncle, a town musician in Merseburg. He studied string and wind instruments and also took lessons on the harpsichord. During this period he came to know the works of the major Baroque composers of the preceeding and present generations. Quantz moved to Dresden and became a member of the town band in 1716. After studying counterpoint the following year in Vienna, he next settled in Dresden as oboist for Augustus II, in the Polish chapel. He perceived little opportunity for advancement on the oboe and switched to flute during this time. His interest in composition began to grow, especially for works for the flute. MIDI FILE - Trio Sonata in C for flute and b.c. (4'16'') Here he had many opportunities to perform for the royalty of Europe. After a distinguished world tour, Quantz was offered a post as a member of the court Kapelle in Dresden. In 1740 he took a special position as composer and flute maker for Frederick, the king of Prussia, where he remained for the rest of his career.
