This great English musician and composer was the second son of Henry Purcell the elder, who also was a musician of some repute and a gentleman of the Chapel Royal. The younger Henry Purcell is traditionally said to have been born in Old Pye Street, Westminster, in or about 1658. He lost his father before he was six years old, and soon afterward was admitted a chorister of the Chapel Royal under Captain Henry Cooke, after whose death, in 1672, he continued under Pelham Humfrey. He is said to have composed anthems while yet a chorister. He may have remained in the choir for a brief period after the appointment of Dr. John Blow as successor to Humfrey as Master of Children, but the probability is that, after quitting the choir on the breaking of his voice, he studied composition under Blow as a private pupil, and so justified the statement on Blow's monument that he was "master to the famous Mr. H. Purcell." The precocity of Purcell's youthful compositions would perhaps not have been so remarkable but for their undoubtedly spontaneous character, and it is by reason of this quality in his music that he stands so far above his contemporaries. As applied to Purcell, the title of "Father of English Music" is merited.

    Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas
    A Strategy for Historically-Informed Role-Allocation in the Twenty-First Century
    E LIZABETH H OLLAND
    UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD
From the beginning of the twentieth century to the late 1970s, Dido and Aeneas was generally accepted by scholars and performers as a girls' school work with eight female roles and one male role. From this supposition a performance culture grew up based on twentieth-century perceptions of suitable vocal ranges, with mezzo-soprano Didos and Sorceresses and baritone Aeneas, often accompanied by a treble or tenor Sailor. Since the late 1970s, scholars have questioned the absolute authority of the Tenbury Manuscript upon which most modern performances are based, and have unearthed different textual and musical sources that challenge the normally accepted voice-type-to-role allocation. To this date, however, neither the old nor the new suggestions can categorically be proved correct. Out of this confusion came a historically-informed performance culture of bass Sorceresses, soprano Didos and tenor Aeneas, as well as the use of falsettist counter-tenors as chorus altos. In the 1990s this situation resulted in conductors feeling at liberty to mix and match elements of both new and old performance cultures, as well as making up their own voice-type casting to suit their personal artistic agendas, in a way that would be considered unacceptable in a Mozart, Verdi or Wagner opera. Whatever the documentary confusion, examination of the music and comparison of it with Purcell's other music for known voice-types may establish which of the twentieth-century performing conventions should continue in the historically-informed performances of the twenty-first century.

Henry Purcell was one of the greatest English composers, flourishing in the period that followed the Restoration of the monarchy after the Puritan Commonwealth period. Purcell spent much of his short life in the service of the Chapel Royal as a composer, organist and singer. With considerable gifts as a composer, he wrote extensively for the stage, particularly in a hybrid musico-dramatic form of the time, for the church and for popular entertainment, a master of English word-setting and of contemporary compositional techniques for instruments and voices. He died in 1695, a year after composing funeral music for Queen Mary. Stage Works Church Music Purcell provided a number of verse anthems and full anthems for the liturgy of the Church of England, as well as settings of the Morning and Evening Service, the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, Te Deum and Jubilate. The anthems offer considerable musical interest, exemplified in the verse anthems Rejoice in the Lord alway and My heart is inditing. Other sacred vocal music includes the Latin psalm setting Jehovah, quam multi sunt as well as settings of sacred poems by contemporary writers. Secular Vocal Music Purcell's secular vocal music includes a number of Odes for the feast of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music and a number of Welcome Songs and other celebrations of royal occasions. He wrote a considerable quantity of solo songs, in addition to the songs included in his work for the theatre. These solo songs and the songs for two or more voices offer a particularly rich repertoire, exemplified by the song Music for a while, from the play Oedipus and Man is for a woman made, from The Mock Marriage. Other vocal works include a number of catches, rounds for popular entertainment.
