Executive summary: Dido and Aeneas English musical composer, born in 1658 in St. Ann's Lane, Old Pye Street, Westminster. His father, Henry Purcell (or Pursell), was a gentleman of the chapel-royal, and in that capacity sang at the coronation of Charles II ; he had three sons, Edward, Henry and Daniel the last of whom was also a prolific composer. After his father's death in 1664 young Henry Purcell was placed under the guardianship of his uncle, Thomas Purcell (d. 1682), a man of extraordinary probity and kindness. Through the interest of this affectionate guardian, who was himself a gentleman of His Majesty's chapel, Henry was admitted to the chapel-royal as a chorister, and studied first under Captain Henry Cooke (d. 1672), "master of the children", and afterwards under Pelham Humfrey (1647-1674), his successor, a pupil of Lully . He is said to have composed well at nine years old; but the earliest work that can be certainly identified as his is an ode for the king's birthday, written in 1670. (The dates for his compositions are often uncertain, though recent research has done much to fix them more authoritatively.) After Humfrey's death he continued his studies under

He was a chorister in the Chapel Royal until his voice broke in 1673, and he was then made assistant to John Hingeston, whom he succeeded as organ maker and keeper of the king's instruments in 1683. In 1677 he was appointed composer-in-ordinary for the king's violins and in 1679 succeeded his teacher, Blow, as organist of Westminster Abbey. It was probably in 1680 or 1681 that he married. From that time he began writing music for the theatre. In 1682 he was appointed an organist of the Chapel Royal. His court appointments were renewed by James II in 1685 and by William III in 1689, and on each occasion he had the duty of providing a second organ for the coronation. The last royal occasion for which he provided music was Queen Mary's funeral in 1695. Before the year ended Purcell himself was dead; he was buried in Westminster Abbey on 26 November 1695.

Though he was to live a very short life he was able to enjoy and make full use of the renewed flowering of music in England following the Restoration of the Monarchy. In addition to his royal duties - he worked in Westminster for three different Kings over twenty-five years - Purcell devoted much of his talent to writing operas, or rather musical dramas, and incidental stage music. Most of Purcell's theatre music was written between 1690 and 1695 (the year of his death), and within that relatively brief period he supplied music for more than forty plays. Much of the instrumental music was published in 1697, when the composer's widow compiled

In 1689 his only opera, Dido and Aeneas , was perf. at Josias Priest's boarding-school for girls at Chelsea, but recent research has convincingly suggested that this may have been a revival and that the opera was comp. at least 5 years earlier, probably 1684. In the last few years of his life, Purcell was increasingly prolific, composing some of his greatest church mus. such as the Te Deum and Jubilate in D . In 1695, for Queen Mary's funeral, he comp. an anthem (

    HENRY PURCELL
    Born: 1659. England
Died: November 21, 1695. Westminster, England
    In his own words...

"Poetry and painting have arrived to their perfection in our own country; music is yet but in its nonage [immaturity], a forward Child, which gives hope of what it may be hereafter in England, when the masters of it shall find more Encouragement." English Composer. Most important English composer of the early Baroque.
Henry Purcell spent his entire career in various capacities as a musician in the English royal court. He began as a singer in the Chapel Royal as a boy. When his voice broke in 1673 he was named an assistant to John Hingeston, the keeper of the king's instruments. Ten years later he succeeded Hingeston in the position. In 1677, he was appointed a composer to the king. A series of other court appointments finally led to his taking the position of organist at Westminster Abbey in 1679, and in 1682 he was appointed organist to the Chapel Royal.
Purcell is probably best known for his dramatic works, including songs and instrumental music for some forty plays. His one true opera (short as it is) was Dido and Aeneas , written for a girls' school in Chelsea. A larger work
