Puccini was born in Lucca in Tuscany Italy into a family with five generations of musical history behind them. His father died when he was five years old, and he was sent to study with his uncle Fortunato Magi , who considered him to be a poor and undisciplined student. Later, Puccini took the position of church organist and choir master in Lucca, but it was not until he saw a performance of Verdi 's Aida Pisa In 1880, with the help of a relative and a grant, Puccini enrolled in the Milan Conservatory to study composition with Amilcare Ponchielli and Antonio Bazzini . In the same year, at the age of 21, he composed the

Giacomo Puccini

Giacomo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini was born in Lucca on December 22nd, 1858, the fifth of seven children. He descended from a long line of musicians, conductors and composers. At 6 he lost his father, Michele, from whom he inherited his position as choirmaster and organist at San Martino Church, and also music teacher at Collegio Ponziano. He spent his childhood between Lucca and Celle: he had a rebel attitude, which made his mother Albina very worried about him. When he was 9, he entered the seminar and became a chorister and organist in the Cathedral of Lucca. His first compositions were thus music for organ and sacred functions. In 1876 he walked from Lucca to Pisa in order to see the latest opera by Verdi, Aida. He was entranced by the opera and decided to attend the conservatory. At the end of 1880 he got diploma at the Pacini Music School in Lucca, for which he composed the Messa a 4 voci con orchestra, and he moved to Milan to study at the Milan Conservatory under the guidance of Bazzini and Ponchielli. Despite the scholarship he was granted by Queen Margherita and the financial help of his uncle, the legal attorney Nicolao Cer¹, those were years of extreme poverty, but also of happy adventures with his classmates, as Puccini reminded later: "at five I have a thrifty meal with soup, then I light up a cigar and I go to the Galleria..". For some months he was also roommate of Pietro Mascagni.

Introduction (born Lucca, 22 December 1858; died Brussels, 29 November 1924). After studying music with his uncle, Fortunato Magi, and with the director of the Istituto Musicale Pacini, Carlo Angeloni, he started his career at the age of 14 as an organist at St. Martino and St. Michele, Lucca, and at other local churches. However, a performance of Verdi 's Aida at Pisa in 1876 made such an impact on him that he decided to follow his instinct for operatic composition. With a scholarship and financial support from an uncle, he was able to enter the Milan Conservatory in 1880. During his three years there his chief teachers were Bazzini and Ponchielli. While still a student, Puccini entered a competition for a one-act opera announced in 1882 by the publishing firm of Sonzogno. He and his librettist, Ferdinando Fontana, failed to win, but their opera Le villi came to the attention of the publisher Giulio Ricordi, who arranged a successful production at the Teatro del Verme in Milan and commissioned a second opera. The Early Years
Giacomo Puccini, the oldest boy in a large family, grew up in Lucca, Italy. His mother had high hopes for him, and she ". . . entrusted her son to her brother Fortunato Magi for his first musical instruction . . ., [but] when the hours with Fortunato Magi produced no good results, Albina sent her son to another teacher, Carlo Angeloni" (Simonetta Puccini in Weaver 1994, 10-11) . Puccini's mother thought that Giacomo would do better in Milan, so she sought the support to send him to study at the Milan Conservatory. Giacomo was granted a scholarship of one hundred lire monthly for a year. . . . On 10 November 1880, not long after his arrival in Milan, Giacomo wrote to his mother: '. . . the exam went well.' (Simonetta Puccini in Weaver 1994, 12-13) Puccini studied at the Milan Conservatory (the conservatory where Verdi had applied and failed to gain admission) from 1880 until 1883. His primary composition teacher was Amilcare Ponchielli, who may have been the major influence on Puccini's operatic future. "The final examinations at the Conservatory went well, and the Capriccio Sinfonico [exam composition] was successfully performed on 4 July 1883 by an orchestra of Conservatory students under Franco Faccio" (Simonetta Puccini in Weaver 1994, 15)

    PUCCINI, GIACOMO BIOGRAPHY
Descended from a family of musicians, Puccini was the most important Italian opera composer in the generation after Verdi. He was born and educated in Lucca, later studying under Ponchielli at the Milan Conservatory. He began his career as a composer of opera with Le Villi, on the story familiar from Adam's ballet Giselle, but first won significant success in 1893 with Manon Lescaut. A musical dramatist of considerable power, if sometimes lacking in depth, he wrote in all twelve operas, the last, Turandot, still unfinished at the time of his death in 1924. Operas Chamber Music Some of the musical material of a particularly poignant moment in Manon Lescaut appears in a set of pieces for string quartet by Puccini, Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums), part of a very small output of instrumental music, little of which was published by the composer.
