Born in 1891 in Krasnoye near Ekaterinoslav, Russia, Sergei Prokofiev's life was as varied as his music. His mother, who also encouraged his evident gift for composition, taught him piano. So much so, that by the time he had reached nine years of age he had composed an opera. When he was eleven he studied with the composer Gliere, and two years later, in 1904, entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied counterpoint with Lyadov and orchestration with Rimsky-Korsakov
Prokofiev was a composer of many parts, blending musical radicalism and intellectual toughness with the older Russian romantic tradition of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov The brilliant young Russian composer and pianist was 26 when the Russian Revolution broke out in 1917, but the new regime was not to Prokofiev's taste and in 1918 he went into exile, first in the United States, but in 1920 settled in Paris where he lived for sixteen years, apart from two years when he lived in Ettal in the Bavarian Alps and where he married his first wife Lina in September, 1923. But the need to earn a living forced him to spend much of his time touring Europe and the USA as a concert pianist. As the Germans advanced on Moscow in August 1941, Prokofiev left for the Caucasus. With Mira Mendelson. Lina remained behind. A Communist Party Member, and niece of the Minister of Heavy Industry, Mira was deemed a much more suitable partner.

PROKOFIEV, SERGEY BIOGRAPHY
Sergey Prokofiev, precocious as a child, entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1904, by which time he had already written a great deal of music. At the Conservatory he shocked the more conservative director, Glazunov, but learned much from an older fellow-student, the composer Myaskovsky. After the Revolution he was given permission to travel abroad and he remained intermittently out of Russia, in America and then in Paris, until his final return to Russia in 1936. At home, though in touch again with the root of his inspiration, he found himself out of favour with the authorities and in 1948 the subject of particular and direct censure. His death in 1953, on the same day as Stalin, deprived him of the enjoyment of the subsequent relaxation in musical censorship that then took place. In style Prokofiev is ironic, writing in a musical language that is often acerbic. Stage Works Orchestral Music Prokofiev wrote seven symphonies. Of these the Classical Symphony, a work written in 1916-17 with the work of Haydn in mind, is the best known. The Fifth Symphony of 1944 is a work on a much larger scale.

    • Prokofiev diaries published for first time
      (3 November 2006)
Anthony Phillips has translated the diaries that Sergey Prokofiev wrote between 1907 and 1914. The book — called Sergey Prokofiev, Diaries 1907-1914, Prodigious Youth — was launched on Wednesday. On BBC radio Phillips told that Prokofiev was a “wonderful writer” who was “uniquely candid” in his diaries. “He started to write an autobiography which, by the time it had reached 200,000 words, he had only got to the age of 17,” said Phillips. Some Reflections on Prokofiev's Music
by Bruce Turlish Although Prokofiev's greatness is recognized , his reputation as a composer rests upon a relative handful of works. This situation is certainly not unique with Prokofiev, but some of the less frequently played compositions are among his most powerful, and I would like to say something here about some works of his that I think deserve greater attention and more frequent performance. Envoi In closing, I must say that no other composer's music has given me as much pleasure as the music of Prokofiev. Even though I am conscious of the achievements of many other composers of the 20th century, including those who excelled in terms of lyrical creation (the composer Arnold Bax stands out in this regard; interestingly, Prokofiev wrote an early orchestral work entitled "Autumnal" which is very reminiscent of Bax's style), none has impressed me as having the musical stature and creative genius of Prokofiev. I realize these sorts of judgments are ultimately subjective in nature, but for me, when the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger observed after learning of Prokofiev's death that he would "remain for us the greatest figure of contemporary music," he was saying something that I personally have been convinced of for a very long time. Prokofiev was the best. Comments upon this article may be sent to: Bruce Turlish at brt@efn.org

Prokofiev wrote six operas including "The Love for Three Oranges", written in 1919 for Chicago, and "The Fiery Angel". His last opera, "War and Peace", is based on Tolstoy's great novel and was performed in its complete version only after his death. He wrote three ballets for Dyagilev, once rejected as undanceable; these include "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella". Film scores by Prokofiev include "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible" written for Eisenstein’s films. Music for the film Lieutenant Kijè, a fictional character, created by a clerical error and maintained in existence to the end, was written in 1933.

Russian composer. His music includes operas such as The Love for Three Oranges Romeo and Juliet Classical Symphony Alexander Nevsky Peter and the Wolf (1936) for children, to his own libretto after a Russian folk tale. Prokofiev was essentially a classicist in his use of form, but his large and varied output shows great lyricism, humour, and skill. His music in his earlier years has a hard brilliance, but his later works show a mellowing and maturity of style. Born near Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipropetrovs'k), he studied at St Petersburg under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and achieved fame as a pianist. He left Russia in 1918 and lived for some time in the USA and in Paris, but returned in 1927 and again in 1935. A Feast in Time of Plague as an opera. By that time he had written many works, including the first piano concerto, which won the Rubinstein Prize. He then set to work on a ballet commission for Sergei Diaghilev that became the

He showed precocious talent as a pianist and composer and had lessons from Glier from 1902. In 1904 he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where Rimsky-Korsakov, Lyadov and Tcherepnin were among his teachers; Tcherepnin and Myaskovsky, who gave him valuable support, encouraged his interest in Skryabin, Debussy and Strauss. He had made his début as a pianist in 1908, quickly creating something of a sensation as an "enfant terrible," unintelligible and ultra-modern - an image he was happy to cultivate. His intemperateness in his early piano pieces, and later in such works as the extravagantly Romantic Piano Concerto no.1 and the ominous no.2, attracted attention. Then in 1914 he left the conservatory and travelled to London, where he heard Stravinsky's works and gained a commission from Dyagilev: the resulting score was, however, rejected (the music was used to make the "Scythian Suite" a second attempt, "Chout," was not staged until 1921. Meanwhile his gifts had exploded in several different directions. In 1917 he finished an opera on Dostoyevsky's "Gambler," a violently involved study of obsession far removed from the fantasy of his nearly contemporary Chicago opera "The Love for Three Oranges," written in 1919 and performed in 1921. Nor does either of these scores have much to do with his "Classical" Symphony, selfconsciously 18th-century in manner, and again quite distinct from his lyrical Violin Concerto no.1, written at the same period and in the same key. There were also piano sonatas based on old notebooks alongside the more adventurous "Visions fugitives," all dating from 1915-19.
