MICHAEL PRAETORIUS (1571-1621), German musical historian, theorist and composer, was born at Kreuzberg, in Thuringia , on the 15th of February 1571. His father's name was Michael Schultheis.' While he was still quite young he visited the university of Frankfort on the Oder for three years. Here he studied philosophy , and on the death of his brother, on whose support he relied, he was given a post as organist in the town. He acted as kapellmeister at Luneburg early in life, was engaged first as organist and later as kapellmeister and secretary to the duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel , and was eventually rewarded for his long services with the priory of Ringelheim, near Goslar . He died at Wolfenbuttel on the 15th of February 1621. Of his very numerous compositions copies are now very scarce. The most important are: Polyhymnia (15 vols.), Musae Sioniae (16 vols.), and Musa Aonia (9 vols.), all written partly to Latin and partly to German words. But more precious than all these is the Syntagma musicum (3 vols. and a

Michael Praetorius (born Creuzburg an der Werra, near Eisenach 15 February Wolfenb¼ttel 15 February ) was a German composer organist and music theorist . He was one of the most important composers of his day and he wrote lots of different kinds of music. A lot of his music is based on hymns of the Protestant church We are not quite certain about the date of his birth. He was born at a time when there was a lot of argument about religion in Germany. His father was a strict Lutheran and lost his job more than once because of his beliefs . We know very little about the life of Praetorius. He seems to have gone to the Lateinschule (“Latin School”) in Torgau where he had music lessons from Michael Voigt. He probably never had music lessons after he left school. Then he went to the University of Frankfurt an der Oder . There Praetorius graduated in divinity . Afterwards he found a job as organist to the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenb¼ttel. He soon earned a good salary. He married in and had two sons.

B ... Z MICHAEL PRAETORIUS (1571 - 1621). Michael Prætorius’s life spanned the transition from the High Renaissance to the early baroque. Born in Kreuzberg, Thuringia, as Michael Schultheiss (Latinized as Prætorius), he was the son of a Lutheran pastor. He spent most of his professional life as an organist, Kantor and Kapellmeister in the Lutheran cities and states of Northern Germany. After studies at Frankfurt an der Oder, at 24 he entered the service of Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel as an organist, and in 1604 he also assumed the duties of court Kapellmeister. Upon the death of his patron in 1613, Prætorius entered the service of the Elector Johann Georg of Saxony at the Dresden court, where he would remain until 1616, when he returned to Wolfenbüttel. While in Dresden, he also served as Kapellmeister to the administrator of the Magdeburg bishopric and prior of the monastery at Ringelheim. Prætorius returned to his old position in Wolfenbüttel, but due to regular travel and failing health, was not reappointed in 1620. He died a wealthy man the following year, and directed that the greater portion of his fortune go to organizing a foundation for the poor. A virtuoso organist, an organ builder, a composer and an assiduous musical scholar, Prætorius is celebrated for writing a remarkable three volume musical treatise, the Syntagma musicum, which allows us rare and fascinating glimpses into the musical sensibilities of his time.

Kapellmeister in 1603. This post necessitated much travelling in Germany, which enabled him to earn widespread renown as a conductor of musical performances, an organ consultant, and a knowledgeable expert on practical music and on musical instruments. Praetorius was a Lutheran church composer of amazing industry. Dominating his output is the 9-volume Musae Sioniae containing 1,244 chorale settings, but he published many others too, altogether including pieces on every conceivable scale from little bicima to massive Polychoral variations with instrumental support. He also wrote much other liturgical music and a set of 312 dances ( Terpsichore ). His 3-volume treatise Syntagma Musicum (1619) is an invaluable compendium of information on German music, musical instruments and performance, based on what he heard and saw in his travels.

Died: Michael Praetorius was the son of Michael Schultze (Praetorius being a Latinization of the name). At an early age Praetorius attended the University of Frankfurt a. O., his brother supporting him.
Praetorius had become famous as composer of church music, among which should be mentioned the mammoth edition of over twelve hundred songs. He began to write a complete encyclopedia of the art and practice of music, of which he finished three volumes with the title Syntagma Musicum. The second volume of this work is the most elaborate and valuable of all treatises on instruments and instrumental music in the 16 th century. It is considered one of the most remarkable examples of musical scholarship in existance. Among his other titles were Musae Sioniae published in nine parts and Hymnodia Sionae. He ranks high as a writer and also as a composer of church melodies. Source: ELHHB Website [Dahle, Library of Christian Hymns; Handbook to the Lutheran Hymnal]

    PRAETORIUS, MICHAEL BIOGRAPHY
Church Music Descended from a family of strict Lutheran persuasion, Praetorius based a great deal of his music on Lutheran hymns and on the Latin Lutheran liturgy of the time. His Musae Sioniae, in nine parts, contains a variety of Lutheran church music, polyphonic and homophonic, with a number of works which have become a well enough known part of present choral and hymn repertoire, in particular the familiar carol Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (A Rose has grown), In dulci jubilo and Puer natus in Bethlehem (A Boy is born in Bethlehem). Instrumental Music Instrumental music by Michael Praetorius is confined to his collection of dances, Terpsichore. A set of organ chorales is included in the seventh book of Musae Sioniae.

    Music from Terpischore
Excerpts from the sleeve notes Furthermore, Praetorius printed a number of pieces among his section of courantes that come from England rather than France. Nos 151, 152, 154 and 123 are settings of the English popular tunes 'Wilson's Wild', 'Light of Love', 'Grimstock' and 'Packington's Pound', while nos 157 and 158 are versions of a lute piece by John Dowland and a song by Thomas Campion respectively. Praetorius presumably obtained these pieces from Emeraud and thought they were French, but Emeraud probably found them in the repertory of popular tunes used by the travelling groups of English actors and musicians that toured Germany in the early seventeenth century; their performances included 'jigs' or short popular dramas set to popular tunes of this sort. We have put them together to make up a suite of six English courantes. Peter Holman ©2001
