French Musical Biography: Introduction to Francis Poulenc A guide to the French composer Francis Poulenc who wrote three operas in his lifetime. Learn about his music and these works. Poulenc is well known for being a rogue composer. He learned mainly by ear, and was largely self-taught besides a year at the Paris Conservatory. His pieces, however, are held up alongside those of Faure and Bizet. His operas, specifically, are colorful, shocking and filled with an eccentric genius. In his youth, Poulenc was part of "Le Six," a group of French composers against Impressionism and Germanic influences from music. He was a great admirer of one member in particular, Eric Satie. Stravinsky, Satie and Milhaud are other famous members of this smaller group, and they went on to create shocking new sounds for the day and age they lived in. Unlike many young composers, Poulenc does not imitate any of his contemporaries in his music. He remains true to form with erratic harmonies, vibrant melodies and unusual ensembles. In thought, they allied themselves with the French writer Cocteau, very active and revolutionary at the time. As a group, they were not really tight-knit. They contained no manifesto, and were more like a group of friends that a revolutionary think tank. In his life, Poulenc wrote only three operas. He uses tonal melody throughout and his music occasionally even has hints of the popular music of his day. His overall style was one of classicism, or a branch or music thought that hearkened to classical music, but contained vast variations on this genre. His operas contain an emphasis on lyrics and melody, which makes then entertaining and aurally engaging. All three operas are unconventional, harmonically engaging and contain a colorful quality matched only by Stravinsky. Of these three, only one, "Dialogues of the Carmelites," is approaching standard repertoire status today.

But Poulenc and his circle hit the classical music scene with almost the same biting, nihilistic force with which the punk movement slammed into popular music in the 1970s and early '80s. Both movements were big on irony and mockery, including self-mockery. The goal was to shock the bourgeoisie, to burn off the sugar coating that music had been collecting in the previous decades. And both movements were absorbed into the mainstream in barely a decade. Satie's followers opposed the vagueness of Impressionism, the style typified by Claude Debussy's ``Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.'' They advocated simplicity and clarity. They also thought emotions should be more restrained than they had been in late 19th century Romantic music, although the Satie set eagerly made exceptions to the rule of restraint for the purposes of satire. In 1920, a critic dubbed the half-dozen leading members of this circle - Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, Germaine Tailleferre and Louis Durey - ``Les Six.''

My Favourites (born: Paris, 7 Jan 1899; died: there, 30 Jan 1963). French composer. His background gave him a musical and literary sophistication from boyhood, and he was already a publicly noted composer by the time he took lessons with Koechlin (1921-4): such works as his Apollinaire song cycle Le bestiaire (1919) and Sonata for two clarinets (1918) had shown the Stravinsky-Satie inclinations that assure him a place among Les Six. His ballet Les biches (1924), written for Dyagilev, established his mastery of the emotions and musical tastes of the smart set, opening a world of suavity and irony that he went on to explore in a sequence of concertante pieces: the Concert champetre for harpsichord, the Aubade with solo piano and the Concerto for two pianos. Around 1935 there came a change in his personal and spiritual life, reflected in a sizable output of religious music, a much greater productivity and an important contribution to French song (from this time he gave recitals with the baritone Pierre Bernac). Yet the basis of his style was unchanged: Stravinsky, Faure and contemporary popular music continued to be his sources, even in the devotional music (Litanies a la vierge noire for female voices and organ) and the larger sacred works (Stabat mater, Gloria). The songs include four cycles. But his output of instrumental music, apart from the many piano pieces of a private character, continued to be modest: his most important later orchestral piece is the G minor organ concerto with strings and timpani (1938), which journeys between Bach and the fairground, while his main chamber works were the sonatas for flute, oboe and clarinet.
