Poulenc was born in Paris . His mother, an amateur pianist, taught him to play, and music formed a part of family life. As he was a capable pianist, the keyboard dominated much of his early compositions. He also, throughout his career, borrowed from his own compositions as well as those of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Camille Saint-Sa«ns . Later in his life, the loss of some close friends, coupled with a pilgrimage to the Black Madonna of Rocamadour , led him to rediscovery of the Catholic faith and resulted in compositions of a more sombre, austere tone.

His music is easy to like at first hearing: it is much simpler than the music of many other composers who were writing modern music at the time. At first the music critics did not think he was a serious composer, but later people realized the importance of his music. He is the greatest writer of French song ( m©lodie ) since Faur©

Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes (Updated Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon (1926) Sonata for Flute and Piano (1956) Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) Trio for Piano, Oboe and Bassoon (1926) "Above all, let not a composer seek to be in the mode. If you are not a la mode today, you may not be out of the mode tomorrow." Poulenc was born in Paris on January 7, 1899. He studied piano with Ricardo Vines and composition with Charles Koechlin. Poulenc attained both a distinct musical voice and success at an early age. During the 1920’s, he was one of the leading spirits of the group of young French composers known as "Les Six" (the six). Their music was often light, witty, satirical and urbane. They were in sympathy with and influenced by Stravinsky and "Neo-Classicism," and in opposition to the cerebral music of Schoenberg and of what they considered to be the religio-musical excesses of their countryman Olivier Messiaen. Poulenc, in particular, often juxtaposes passages of wit and irony with lush, sentimental outpourings; his beloved "Mauvaise Music." Poulenc composed orchestral, chamber music, ballets, concertos, film scores, and opera, as well as powerful choral and sacred music. In the field of French art songs he is an acknowledged master, with over 130 songs to his credit. Indeed, melody was the most important element to him. Norbert DuFourcq writes: "...he found his way to a vast treasury of undiscovered tunes within an area that had, according to the most up-to-date musical maps, been surveyed, worked and exhausted." Of his own work, he wrote, "I know perfectly well that I’m not one of those composers who have made harmonic innovations like Igor (Stravinsky)

Franz Schubert and Wolfgang Mozart Poulenc behaved like a sophisticated eccentric (he once chatted up a stupefied Cannes bartender about an ingenious harmonic progression he managed to pull off that morning), and the eccentricity not surprisingly showed up in his music. Many have called attention to his split artistic personality, "part monk, part guttersnipe," but really he has many more sides. Like most French composers of his generation, he fell under the influences of Stravinsky and Satie. Yet he doesn't imitate either. You can identify a Poulenc composition immediately with its bright colors, strong, clear rhythms, and gorgeous and novel diatonic harmonies. He is warmer and less intellectual than Stravinsky, more passionate and musically more refined than Satie. In the Twenties, Poulenc was part of Les Six, an informal confederation of French composers who wanted to divorce both Impressionism and Germanicism from French music and create an amalgam from

The French composer Francis Poulenc only undertook formal musical training with Charles Koechlin in 1921, by which time he had already become identified with Les Six, the six French composers of the circle of Jean Cocteau, including Honegger, Auric and Milhaud. Born: Died:
For centuries Parisians have taken it for granted that Paris is the centre of the civilised world. The French provinces have their points, no doubt (for one thing, they provide relief from the August heat of the capital), but in cultural matters they have never had any real influence. The provincials for their part have always regarded Paris with a somewhat wary disdain: the city, as the centre of political power, could never be ignored, but its citizens did tend to be blown about by every wind of fashion and to be consumed by a sense of their own importance.
When Francis Poulenc was born in Paris on 7 January 1899, he inherited a share of both viewpoints. His mother, born Jenny Royer, came from a long line of Parisian craftsmen and brought with a strain of freethinking independence and a deep love of the arts. Poulenc’s father Emile, on the other hand, from the Aveyron district, between Toulouse and the Massif Central, was a devout Roman Catholic. This dichotomy can be seen in their son on many levels and it was one he never perhaps completely reconciled. We might even suggest that the friction between the two attitudes was responsible for generating some of his compositional energy.
His mother was a talented amateur pianist and musical soir©es were a regular occurrence. The young Francis preferred listening to the music from under the grand piano, except when it came to the Faur© First Violin Sonata, when he would take refuge in his bedroom. His mother was his first piano teacher and his involvement with music was to remain that of an amateur for some years. He came to love Schubert’s Die Winterreise, was impressed by the early Stravinsky ballets and even had a go at the Three Piano Pieces by Sch¶nberg, but the decisive encounter was with a nickeloden in a Paris arcade, and with the eminent pianist Eduard Risler playing the ‘Idylle’ from Chabrier’s Dix Pi¨ces pittoresques. From that moment the 14-year-old Poulenc knew he was going to be a composer.

Welcome to Francis Poulenc .com - Francis Poulenc's Bio
Francis Poulenc was born in Paris on January 7th 1899. He was born to Jenny Royer and Emile Poulenc. Jenny was a craftswoman with an extreme interest in the world of arts, and a free-thinker. Francis father Emile on the other hand was from the Aveyron region of Central France and was a devout Catholic. As a result, Francis Poulenc was brought up between two differing attitudes and many believe this may have been responsible for his compositional style and energy. Francis mother was responsible for introducing Francis to the piano, herself being a talented pianist. Jenny became his first piano tutor. When the 14-year old Francis heard 'Idylle' from Chabrier's Dix Pieces pittoresques being played by the eminent pianist Eduard Risler, he knew that he wanted to be a composer. In 1914, the famous Ricardo Vines tutored Francis, and he befriended Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric and Erik Satie. Sadly, during this time his mother died and was followed by his father in 1917. His parents never heard any of Francis' compositions being performed. The first of his compositions being performed in December of 1917, entitled Rapsodie Negre for baritone and chamber ensemble, which was recieved well. In 1918, Francis Poulenc was called for his National Service, but as well as completing this he still found time for the composition of three miniatures. A Sonata for piano, a Sonata for Two Clarinets and the third was a set of Trois Mouvements Perpetuels. The third composition combined Parisian and provinical elements and was played pubically in 1919. The piece became popular around Europe.

During the First World War he worked as a typist for the Admiralty in Paris and became one of the six French composers (with including Honegger Auric Tailleferre Durey and Milhaud ), known as Les Six, who rejected romaticism and impressionism. After the war he studied under Charles Koechlin Initially light-hearted and ironic in style, the death of a close friend in 1935 brought a new depth to his work. The songs written after 1935, when he began accompanying the French baritone Pierre Bernac, are among his best works. Francis Poulenc Works Poulenc won considerable success with his comic opera Les Mamelles de Tirèsias, with a text by Apollinaire, written in 1944 and staged in Paris in 1947. The tragic opera Dialogue des Carmèlites, with a libretto by Georges Bernanos dealing with the execution of Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution and based on Gertrud von le Fort's novel Die Letzte am Schafott (The Last on the Scaffold), has entered international repertoire.
