Parallel Speech Recognition
Steven Phillips, Anne Rogers
Computer speech recognition has been very successful in limited domains and for isolated word recognition. However, widespread use of large-vocabulary continuous- speech recognizers is limited by the speed of current recognizers, which cannot reach acceptable error rates while running in real time. This paper shows how to harness shared memory multiprocessors, which are becoming increasingly common, to increase significantly the speed, and therefore the accuracy or vocabulary size, of a speech recognizer. We describe the parallelization of an existing high-quality speech recognizer, achieving a speedup of a factor of 3, 5 and 6 on 4, 8 and 12 processors respectively for the benchmark North American business news (NAB) recognition task. Political Representation
First published Mon 2 Jan, 2006 This encyclopedia entry has three main goals. The first is to provide a general overview of the meaning of political representation, identifying the key components of this concept. The second is to highlight several important advances that have been made by the contemporary literature on political representation. These advances point to new forms of political representation, ones that are not limited to the relationship between formal representatives and their constituents. The third goal is to reveal several persistent problems with theories of political representation and thereby to propose some future areas of research.
1. Key Components of Political Representation
Political representation, on any account, will exhibit the following four components:

Programme Note
Bending Towards the Light...A Jazz Nativity
Composer note:
Bending Towards the Light...A Jazz Nativity is the traditional Christmas story told through the medium of jazz. The roles of the Shepherds, the Kings, the Angels, and Mary and her Spirit, are played by singers, dancers, and jazz musicians. A ten-piece jazz ensemble, a full choir, and two children are included in the cast. From the opening bars of "Silent Night" (played in the darkness), moving to the arrival of the "Jazz Kings" when the orchestra plays "We Three Kings," travelling to the finale of "Deck the Halls" (when guest jazz artists come up from the audience to join in the celebration), Bending Towards the Light is a fusion of holiday joy, spirituality, and jazz history.

While she attended West Virginia University as an undergraduate she began writing the stories that would make up her first volume of fiction, Sweathearts (1976), which was published and awarded a Pushcart Prize even before she entered the Iowa Writers workshop as a student in 1977. Knopf, 2000, ISBN 0-375-40194-6), is scheduled to be released on Mother's Day. MotherKind explores the spiritual education involved in the most fundamental transition most people ever have to facethat of the child becoming the caretaker of the parent. The novel's protagonist, Kate, finds herself caring for her terminally ill mother during the early months of a young marriage and just after she has given birth to her first child. In a single year Kate must come to terms with this intersection of radiant beginnings and profound loss. Phillips tells Kate's story in a delicately layered narrative in which the daily details of life resonate with import and meaning. Black Tickets , which included a mixture of stylistically daring short pieces resembling prose poems, interior monologues from disenfranchised characters on the fringes of society, and longer stories exploring the complexities of family life.
