U.S. composer and instrument maker. He grew up in Arizona and was largely self-taught musically. During the Great Depression, he traveled as a hobo, conceiving many of his musical ideas while doing so. About 1930 he began building original percussion and string instruments, tunable to 43 divisions of the octave. His works often involve theatrical elements, reflecting his interest in African, Japanese, and Native American ritual. They include US Highball (1943), and And on the Seventh Day Petals Fell on Petaluma document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Harry Partch" from the 32 Volume Partch, Harry - visionary and eclectic composer and instrument builder, largely self-taught, whose compositions are remarkable for the complexity of their scores (each instrument has its own characteristic notation, often involving 43 tones to each octave) and their employment of unique instruments of his invention. Partch's early works are mainly vocal, based on texts collected during his travels as a hobo ... microtonal music - music using tones that are not an exact number of semitones (half steps) apart. The smallest interval between two keys on a piano (e.g., between B and C, F and F, A and A) is the semitone (or half tone), an interval also measured as 100 cents. There are thus 12 equal semitones, or 1,200 cents, to the octave; these in sequence constitute the chromatic scale. (For a more detailed discussion of this ...

Biography
Original American composer Harry Partch was influenced by no one nor any musical genre or tradition. A Newsweek citation states: "Harry Partch is an American visionary and stubborn individualist... He has built his own musical world out of microtones, hobo speech, elastic octaves and percussion instruments made from hubcaps and nuclear cloud chambers. His music is also influenced by "African polyrhythms, ancient Greek modes, bits of Babylonia and the American diesel engine all gathered into a richly erotic, primitive, fresh and stirring drama of sound". Harry Partch describes his creativity as: "I have never been involved with the development of modern or avant-garde music. I have always been a loner. There is nothing like my work in the modern world that I know of". His instruments, all constructed and sculpted by him from scraps and objects found near Sausalito, California are probably now stored at the Whitney Museum in New York City.

Harry Partch iconoclastic American composer, musical theorist, philosophic instrument builder, raconteur, hobo, artist presents unique challenges and aesthetics. This site, centering on the life and works of Partch, is maintained by people who knew him, worked with him, and are familiar with what moved him. We are one set of viewpoints, presented in a tone that we hope Harry himself would have approved: sometimes irreverent, occasionally bordering on the academic, essentially uncompromising. His beliefs, concepts and attitudes are advocated here. We are loose, but we are serious. And, just so you know, this is all produced under the auspices of the Harry Partch Foundation (Danlee Mitchell, Executive Director) which makes Corporeal Meadows

Largely ignored by standard musical institutions, he criticised concert traditions, the roles of performer and composer, the role of music in society, the twelve-tone equal-temperament scale and the concept of pure or abstract music. To explain his ideas, he wrote "Genesis of a music". Between 1930 and 1972, Partch, who held no teaching appointments, but had research posts at the universities of Wisconsin, Illinois, and California, created music dramas, dance theatre, vocal music and chamber music
mostly performed on instruments he built himself. His compositions combine American folklore, African and Oriental literature, and mystical and pre-Christian magical thoughts, laced with parody, satire, studied naivety, and irony. His works received wide attention only late in his life, largely as a result of a performance of

Composer John Beal: Harry Partch Bio Harry Partch
An obituary reads: "Harry Partch: American composer, librettist, philosopher, publisher, record distributor, teacher, satirist, instrument builder and designer, sculptor, instrument repairman and tuner, theorist, experimentalist, iconoclast, self-taught musician, percussionist, adapted violist, conductor, author, retired hobo, seaman, sewer cleaner, dishwasher and kitchen flunky, comedian, vagrant, member of the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, and graffitist. Until his death, Harry Partch had lived in San Diego and had been doing his own thing for more than half a century. Partch's own thing began with his rejection of the European masters and the traditional bourgeois concert-hall performance." [Numus-West; 6/74, Page 28]
Harry Partch was born in Oakland, California. His parents had been Presbyterian missionaries in China who endured the Boxer Rebellion. Two years after his birth, they moved to Arizona to homestead, but never for long in any one place; after age fourteen, in fact, Partch never stayed more than three years in any single residence. He roamed all over: Hawaii at age twenty, the Midwest and East and back to Northern and Southern California. Partch's early compositions, dating from the 1930's, are all vocal, with small instrumental accompaniments. They are masterpieces of Americana, employing the language in a natural style uninfluenced by European traditions.

I've not heard much of Harry Partch's music, but for the last two months, I've been downloading Innova tracks from eMusic . I don't have any particular intellectual interest in tuning, instrument building, or even mixed media. And yet to my surprise, I am enchanted and in some weird kind of way, I also think Partch's music can sound beautiful. Dr. Dick has a post from last month, The Beautiful Is Difficult . It's more from the point of view of the composer. But as a listener, unlike with say the string quartets of Carter, I have just "clicked" with Partch's music i.e. no effort required. I retain the right to change my mind... robert gable aworks partch great depression/ww ii era partch del.icio.us
