B ... Z GIOVANNI PIERLUIGI DA PALESTRINA (1526-1594 )Italian composer of sacred music. Active in Rome through most of his career. Did Palestrina save church music? This is the legend repeated by various authors, and even made into an operatic plot in the early part of this century! According to this myth, the members of the Council of Trent were poised on the brink of banning polyphonic music in the church. It was only after hearing a piece by Palestrina (often said to be the Pope Marcellus Mass) that they relented. While the story is not true, it reflects a real aspect of Palestrina's life: his commitment to sacred music and his keen interest in satisfying the desires of church leaders in the sixteenth century. His Pope Marcellus Mass is justifiably held up as the perfect example of Counter Reformation style. Palestrina's career likewise reflects his commitment to the music of the church. He was born in the small town of Palestrina (outside of Rome) and received his early training and spent the great majority of his career in various churches in Rome, including the Pope's chapel. His music was universally recognized as a model of clarity and balance, and theorists of the time constantly pointed to his pieces to illustrate their points. While he did write some secular madrigals, later in his life he renounced them (saying that he "blushed and grieved" over them) and began writing "spiritual madrigals" pieces in the lighter style of the madrigal without the taint of a secular text.

Giovanni Palestrina
An Italian composer of sacred music who was an important musical figure of the Renaissance; known for his "seamless texture" of polyphony. Palestrina composed over 100 settings of the mass (in Richard Wagner's words, with "indescribable depth of expression"), including the Missa Papae Marcelli, composed after an edict by Pope Marcellus that the vocal music for the mass "must be sung in a fitting manner, with properly modulated voices, so that everything may be heard and understood." Palestrina succeeded in doing this with remarkable clarity of line, beauty of modal harmony, and a festive rhythmic sense. The Assumpta est Maria is probably his best mass, with the voices moving more like orchestra parts than block harmony or contrapuntal choirs. ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide Expand [+] dojo.byId('bio2').innerHTML = 'An Italian composer of sacred music who was an important musical figure of the Renaissance; known for his "seamless texture" of polyphony. Palestrina, his name derived from his probable place of birth, was one of the principal composers of the late 16th century, his style taken as a model by later generations. His musical language represents the climax of musical achievement of the period, above all in his mastery of earlier Franco-Flemish polyphonic techniques, now used with complete assurance, particularly in the provision of music for the Catholic liturgy both before and after the reforming Council of Trent. Palestrina's career was largely spent in Rome, at the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's and at St. John Lateran. Church Music Palestrina wrote a large number of settings of the ordinary of the Mass. Of these the Missa Papae Marcelli, popularly supposed to have been written to convince the authorities at the Council of Trent that there was still a place for polyphony in the musical performance of the Catholic liturgy, is among the best known. Missa Aeterna Christi munera, a Mass that makes use of the plainchant of the title as its basis, is a fine example of Palestrina's technical command, but a similar claim might be made for almost any other of the 100 or so surviving Mass settings. The very large number of surviving motets offers a similar embarrassment of choice. Palestrina's liturgical music also includes settings of the Lamentations for Holy Week, taken from the Book of Jeremiah, litanies, settings of the Magnificat and offertories. In addition to generally conservative Italian madrigals, he also wrote a number of five-voice Italian sacred madrigals.

a brief biography of palestrina, giving information about his career in Rome and the Pope Marcellus Mass.

by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
Acclaimed as one of the greatest composers of Renaissance church music, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born in 1525 (exact date disputed), and he died in 1594. His surname comes from the place of his birth: a village, about twenty miles from Rome (ancient Praeneste) . Following his early training as a choirboy at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome from 1537 onward, where h e was a pupil of Mallapert and Firmin Lebel, Palestrina was appointed organist and maestro di cappella at Saint Agapito, in the village of Palestrina in 1544, and in 1547 he married Lucrezia Gori there. The marriage later produced three children. The Bishop of Palestrina later became Pope Julius III, and after seven years, his former Bishop summoned the composer to Rome as chapelmaster of the Cappella Giulia, a boy’s choir at Saint Peter's, where he served from 1551 to 1554 and again from 1571 until his death. His choir consisted entirely of Italian boys, being sharply contrasted with the choir of the Sistine Chapel, which since the early Renaissance had consisted almost entirely of Flemish male singers, who were highly skilled in the “Netherlander art” of unaccompanied polyphonic choral music. Soon after Palestrina's appointment at Saint Peter’s, he published his first book of Mass Ordinaries, which he gratefully dedicated to Pope Julius III. Palestrina was later appointed a member of the Sistine Chapel Choir by Pope Julius. However, he was subsequently dismissed from his duties in the Sistine Choir by the next pope, Paul IV, because he was not a member of a Holy Order and due to his “unacceptable married status.” He was quickly retired with a small pension. However, Palestrina’s music became the mainstay of the same choir from which he was excluded as a member. Following this setback, Palestrina gained other appointments in Rome as choirmaster at Saint John Lateran in 1555-1560, at Santa Maria Maggiore in 1561-1566, and at the

Italian composer. He was a pupil of Mallapert and Firmin Lebel at S Maria Maggiore, Rome, where he was a choirboy from at least 1537. He became organist of S Agapito, Palestrina, in 1544 and in 1547 married Lucrezia Gori there; they had three children. After the Bishop of Palestrina's election as pope (Julius III) he was appointed maestro di cappella of the Cappella Giulia in Rome (1551), where he issued his first works (masses, 1554); during 1555 he also sang in the Cappella Sistina. Two of Rome's greatest churches then procured him as maestro di cappella, St John Lateran (1555-60) and S Maria Maggiore (1561-6), and in 1564 Cardinal Ippolito d'Este engaged him to oversee the music at his Tivoli estate. From 1566 he also taught music at the Seminario Romano, before returning to the Cappella Giulia as maestro in 1571.
During the 1560s and 1570s Palestrina's fame and influence rapidly increased through the wide diffusion of his published works. So great was his reputation that in 1577 he was asked to rewrite the church's main plainchant books, following the Council of Trent's guidelines. His most famous mass, Missa Papae Marcelli, may have been composed to satisfy the council's requirements for musical cogency and textual intelligibility. He was always in tune with the Counter-Reformation spirit; after his wife's death in 1580 he considered taking holy orders, but instead he remarried (1581). His wife, Virginia Dormoli, was a wealthy fur merchant's widow; his investments in her business eased his financial strains, and his last years at St Peter's were among his most productive.

He was the most famous sixteenth-century representative of the Roman School of musical composition. Palestrina had a vast influence on the development of Roman Catholic church music, and his work can be seen as a summation of Renaissance polyphony.
