Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
The greatest composer of liturgical music of all time , born at Palestrina (ancient Praeneste) in 1514 or 1515, according to Baini , Riemann, and others, according to Haberl , in 1526; died at Rome , 2 February, 1594. His early history is practically unknown. Giuseppe Ottavia Pittoni (1657-1743), in "notizie dei maestri di cappella si di Rome che ultramontani, 1600-1700", a manuscript in the Vatican , relates that young Pierluigi sang in the streets of Rome while offering for sale the products of his parents farm and that he was heard on such an occasion by the choirmaster of Santa Maria Maggiore, who, impressed by the boy's beautiful voice and pronounced musical talent, educated him musically. As to the identity of the choirmaster, tradition gives no clue. Some hold that Palestrina was taught by Jacques Arcadelt (1514-60), choirmaster and composer in Rome from 1539 to 1549. The opinion, so long held, that Claude Goudimel (1505-72) was his principal teacher has now been definitively abandoned. As far as is known, he began his active musical

Giovanni Pierluigi Da Palestrina
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was born in 1525 and died in 1594. His surname comes from the place of his birtha small town twenty miles from Rome. A choirboy at S. Maria Maggiore, Rome, in 1537, he was appointed organist and maestro di cappella at Palestrina cathedral in 1544 under the Bishop who later became Pope Julius III. After seven years his former summoned him to Rome as chapelmaster of the Cappella Giulia at St Peter's, in which post he served from 1551 to 1554 and again from 1571 until his death His choir here consisted of Italians, being thus sharply distinguished from the choir of the Sistine Chapel, which since Dufay 's days and before had been almost entirely recruited from Flanders. Soon after Palestrina's appointment he brought out a book of masses, which are the first ever dedicated to a Pope by an Italian composer. The fact may be remembered as a symbol of the rising influence of the native school. A few years later Palestrina was appointed a member of the Sistine Choir, but was subsequently dismissed by Paul IV because of his unacceptable married status, and was quickly retired with a pension. After other appointments, as choirmaster at St John Lateran in 1555-60, at S. Maria Maggiore in 1561-6, and at the Roman Seminary in 1566-71. As earlier mentioned, Palestrina returned to the Julian Chapel in 1571 as chapelmaster, remaining there until he died in 1594. In the 1560s he had also directed concerts at the Tivoli villa of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, and had a Mass commissioned by the Duke of Mantua, who tried to persuade him to leave Rome for the Mantuan court.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
The greatest master of Roman Catholic church music, Palestrina was the name of a small town near Rome where he was born. Palestrina began his musical training when he was seven, starting out as a choirboy in the local cathedral similar to many other composers. He traveled to Rome, still a member of the choir, and continued to study music there. In 1544, Palestrina returned to his hometown, showing everything he learned, as organist and choirmaster of the cathedral. When the bishop of the cathedral became Pope Julius III, he took Palestrina with him to Rome as choirmaster of the Cappella Giulia. Palestrina's first book of masses, printed in 1554, was dedicated to the pope, and the pope returned the favor by assigning him as a member of the Sistine Choir in the Vatican. Palestrina went on to serve as music director of several churches after he was relieved from his position in the Sistine Choir once the pope was replaced. When offered posts at several courts of music, he demanded such a high salary that he was never hired. In 1571, he returned to the Cappella Giulia, where he stayed as music director for the rest of his life. The works of Palestrina were like those of no other. He inhabited the musical style that had started in fifteenth century Netherlands. He used that smooth, echo of voices to create his own style of characteristic styles of the church, the type of music one ruminates about when visiting the great cathedrals of Rome, or the vast hillsides of Italy. Such a smooth sound to the ears, combined with natural human voices implies an ethereal, majestic mood to Palestrina's works. The long and flowing melodies match with the ingenious harmonies, sending the listener to a deep relaxation of vast unspecified thinking.

From 1566 he also taught music at the Seminario Romano, before returning to the Cappella Giulia as maestro in 1571.
During the 1560s and 1570s, Palestrina's fame and influence increased rapidly through his published works. His reputation was so great that in 1577 he was asked to rewrite the church's main plainchant books, following the Council of Trent's guidelines. His most well know mass, Missa Papae Marcelli, may have been composed to satisfy the council's requirements for musical cogency and textual intelligibility. He was always in tune with the Counter-Reformation spirit; after his wife's death in 1580 he considered taking holy orders, but instead married a year later. His second wife was Virginia Dormoli, the widow of a wealthy fur merchant, and it was through his investments in her business that his financial strains were eased, and his last years at St Peter's were amongst his most productive.

PALESTRINA, GIOVANNI PIERLUIGI DA BIOGRAPHY
Palestrina, his name derived from his probable place of birth, was one of the principal composers of the late 16th century, his style taken as a model by later generations. His musical language represents the climax of musical achievement of the period, above all in his mastery of earlier Franco-Flemish polyphonic techniques, now used with complete assurance, particularly in the provision of music for the Catholic liturgy both before and after the reforming Council of Trent. Palestrina's career was largely spent in Rome, at the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's and at St. John Lateran. Church Music Palestrina wrote a large number of settings of the ordinary of the Mass. Of these the Missa Papae Marcelli, popularly supposed to have been written to convince the authorities at the Council of Trent that there was still a place for polyphony in the musical performance of the Catholic liturgy, is among the best known. Missa Aeterna Christi munera, a Mass that makes use of the plainchant of the title as its basis, is a fine example of Palestrina's technical command, but a similar claim might be made for almost any other of the 100 or so surviving Mass settings. The very large number of surviving motets offers a similar embarrassment of choice. Palestrina's liturgical music also includes settings of the Lamentations for Holy Week, taken from the Book of Jeremiah, litanies, settings of the Magnificat and offertories. In addition to generally conservative Italian madrigals, he also wrote a number of five-voice Italian sacred madrigals.

Palestrina composed 105 Masses , more than 250 motets Magnificats , other sacred music, and some secular madrigals . Bach is known to have arranged one of Palestrina's Missa sine nomine for voices and instruments.

  • Choirboy in Rome

Known as the "Prince of Music," Giovanni Palestrina was an Italian Renaissance period composer who wrote music almost solely for the purpose of the Catholic church. 104 Masses are counted among his works, as well as a vast 450 other sacred compositions. Within this religious category, Palestrina produced 250 motets , or choral works based on Latin texts. In addition, he wrote 50 spiritual Italian madrigals . Besides impressive technical mastery and great attention to detail, there is an aura of calmness and reverence present in his music. Although primarily associated with the church, Palestrina did write approximately 100 secular madrigals, which were compositions light in melody and harmony. However, these "sinful" pieces caused him much embarrassment, and he was reported as saying that he "blushed and grieved" to have written such works (Grout 251). To the world of musicians, the name Palestrina became associated with an element called stile antico , a serious style that served to represent all church music in the Renaissance period. Used as the model for

      Music History 102:
      The Renaissance
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth in learning, science, and the arts throughout Europe. The rediscovery of the writings of ancient Greece and Rome led to a renewed interest in learning in general. The invention of the printing press allowed the disbursement of this knowledge in an unprecedented manner. The invention of the compass permitted the navigation of the world's oceans and the subsequent discovery of lands far removed from the European continent. With Copernicus' discovery of the actual position of the earth in the solar system and Martin Luther's Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church lost its grip on society and a humanist spirit was born.
